Title: Voting on "Touchy" Subjects VS Privacy?
Post by: DBY106698 on July 07, 2008, 01:14:50 AM
So now I'm curious. Dawei has made it known that people with high enough access can see which option everyone votes for. He's also shown that he is more than willing to post what people voted for in free public viewing. So with a topic that some people may find "touchy", such as Sexual Orientation, they may simply cast their vote and not post what they said for wanting to be left "secret". Well obviously Dawei doesn't care if that's the case or not.

So my questions are:

1. Will you still vote in a subject you may find touchy knowing that it can be seen by the higher ups and may be publicly posted so everyone knows what you voted?

2. Could it be considered Invasion of Privacy for having your answers to polls posted in clear view of the public when you did not openly post your views on the "touchy" subject?

By all means, feel free to comment. I'm curious as to what the board thinks in detail.

Truth.

I mean, it's really dick to go and post what you said if you wanted it secret, that just shows that vagina cleaning devicebaggedness (big. intercourse ing. word.) is a part of their character. But knowing that they can do that, it's up to you whether or not to risk your "secret".

Chances are you don't know half of these people, so what if they know?

Alright alright. A very open individual, I see. That's good. Glad to hear that you're very sound and secure with who you are to be that way. That's pretty admirable.

As for Riddler_Rob, that's an interesting point. If you don't want to risk something being known, don't risk it getting posted like that. But then comes the question of whether you risk it or not, should it be posted in the eyes of the public without first asking for your consent? What if someone does NOT know that moderators have the power to do that, or thinks that they would not look into it, let alone be willing to post it openly? I agree in the "Who cares if it's known" since ya don't know and probably never will know any one here, but does that really make up for it?

If you're participating in a poll or whatever, you're already voicing your opinion.  I guess some people are sometimes only fine sharing something if anonymous and might be put off if that anonymity is broken by a higher-up.. but I think you're already half-way there to admitting it's you who chose "option x" anyways by even participating.  I say learn to be comfortable with yourself.. it's an internet forum.. you can't worry too much about being judged by everyone anyways.. how well are we gonna get to know each other?  Meh, I dunno, personally if I vote in a poll, chances are I like being bold and sharing my answers anyways.  It is a poll after all.  Hmm...

Don't vote then if you aren't comfortable and don't wanna "risk it", simple as that, yeah?

You are on our forum. We have the right to view any information you submit. If you don't like it, don't come here. Simple as that. If you post any identifiable, embarrassing, or "private" information here, it is simply the stupidity of you, and not us. If we find any submitted material suitable for a good laugh, we are legally allowed to make it public here, because this is a public forum.

Consent does not need to be asked.

There's no decency factor? I mean I know I said who cares who knows, but it's still a dick move to go and post that stuff.

Exactly. I really don't give a poop, but still.

But there are people, like Star, who are completely open about their sexuality. One of the great things about the Internet is that you post anonymously. Almost no one knows who you are. So very few people have to worry about secrets being told publicly.

Yes and no. If we made a poll about what your phone number is, and we made it public to all the Internet, that would be considered Invasion of Privacy. If we made a poll asking if anyone was an escaped convict, and we made a "Yes" answer public, I believe we have a right to do that.

Staff will not use poll results in any way, shape, or form against any users, regardless of what the subject or what the user votes.

It's only the truth.

Some of us are decent, though some of us are complete dicks.

I vote if I feel like it.  Nothing on this forum is private, and you shouldn't expect it to be.  If you want something kept private, take care of it elsewhere.
