Okay, the official help site was no help at all, so can someone here help me? My Xbox 360 is plugged directly into my computer, and I therefore fail the IP Address test every time I try to connect to Xbox Live. My dad's gotten through it before, but he doesn't recall exactly how. If it helps you help me, I have Windows XP on my computer.
I don't think you're supposed to plug it in into the computer. You have a router or something?
No, it can be plugged into the computer.
But anyway, I was about to check this thread to see it anyone had replied, when suddenly my internet wouldn't work anymore. Then, when my dad got it back on, Xbox Live was working. :|
Thanks anyways.
First of all, you don't connect your 360 directly into your computer unless it has two ethernet jacks? Which I doubt it does, you can plug it into your Modem as an alternative to the Linksys...I don't know how it worked plugged into the Computer but w.e >.>
My computer isn't plugged into the router, if that's what you're saying: I have a wireless router for all PCs in my house. I was just using a cable for the 360 cause paying $100 for a wireless 360 reciever seemed like a really bad idea.

That's your problem then. You can't do it that way. You need to plug the Ethernet cable into your router to avoid any more problems.

That's what I do, and it works fine. I have a wireless router as well, but I still have the 360 wired because I don't feel like paying for the 360 wireless receiver. Your router should have a few ports on back; use one of those.
I have two laptops and one is basically dead. I decided to use THAT laptop as my 360's wireless adapter. All I do is turn that laptop on, make sure it's connected to the internet via a wireless router, and in some options menu somewhere.. I check off something about "sharing an internet connection through this computer" and then on the 360 I do the internet connection test and it works.
You can plug it into the router or Modem guys...
Some computers even have built in routers...

Not when both the router and modem are 1.5 floors below where you are.. that's when my strategy works. ^_^
I think I know what your talking about it not working. Go to your network connections, click on the connection that you are getting internet from, then hold ctrl and click on the connection that the xbox is going to, now right click and choose "bridge connections". If you are having problems now with the internet, try going to run, then cmd and type in "netsh bridge show adapter", it will show your bridged connections, now type in "netsh bridge set adapter x forcecompatmode=enable" where x is your connection that your getting your internet from. This is how I do it when Im in the living room because the router is upstairs.

That's actually a really interesting strategy...
Never seen that done before.
I found some 3rd party Wirless adapter that has worked fined (its made by Pelican I think) and it was only $25
