Next time, don't break your post and say that you are editing my quote. I've seen Almost and Halifax live (and Saosin) and they are pretty good. Check them out sometime.
Yeah, I figured Saosin would be popular. I don't keep up with charts, so I wouldn't know.
L'Arc~en~Ciel. ^____^
Alstroemeria Records (actually the name of the group olol)
Chiaki Ishikawa
Dude Dude Chick (just because of "Bees")
Killingscum
Kool Killers
Neuroticfish
SGX
The Toxic Avenger
to name a few. I left out even the ones people that listen to non-mainstream electronica would know and people who only listen to mainstream would never hear of.
The Postal Service is hardly known outside of our cult fanbase where I live, though they've had hits, they haven't stuck in anyone's heads...
that nobody's heard of where I live? Massive Attack (dunno how they haven't heard of them... everyone here is a House fan...)

I think Hellogoodbye is pretty known.
Most people I know have heard of them.

yes, that it is.
in fact, the whole album is awesome. the only one that i don't really like is Recycled Air. The District is awesome as well.
Brand New Colony is my fave though.
I have no idea how known these are.

Ready Steady GO.
Enter the Haggis
Rezurex
Phenomenauts
Tiger Army
I'd say The Living End, my favorite band, but everyone's heard of them because of their covered song "Carry Me Home" in GH2.
I'd also say Franz Ferdinand, but a lot of people know them for one song, so that doesn't count.
Brownie Mary
And Carbon Leaf.
Seriously, NO ONE I know has heard of them.

That's probably one of the biggest bands around here. The sad thing is that whenever they do live shows, they only play the really poppy stuff. The guys are really nice, though.
Anyways, I'm a really big fan of Jean Michel Jarre, Amon Tobin, Eddie Jobson, Goose, Patrick O'Hearn, and The Islands and The Sea (which is a local band).
Relatively unknown bands that I like include Overview, Astronaut, Man on Earth, Everybody Else, The Tangent, Grand National, and Yo La Tengo. I know other bands that are probably unknown to most people, but to the people that like that genre of music they're pretty popular.
In America, only Toku watchers know of TETRA-FANG, Tourbillon, and AAA. So I guess them.

yeah i sort of thought that, but i put them on just in case. A lot of people don't actually know Tom DeLonge the singer for blink-182 is for Angels and Airwaves and Mark Hoppus the other singer for blink-182 is for +44 after the blink hiatus. it really annoys me.
Horizontal Orange.
Is !!! (chkchkchk) unknown enough?

Most semi-casual punk listeners had better know a good half of those.

I only know about them from screwing around on Wikipedia.
The Depreciation Guild. They're growing in popularity really fast though.
