Title: Sonic and the Black Knight.
Post by: Tupin on July 29, 2008, 07:29:08 PM
I swear, I didn't believe this when I first saw it. I mean it COULD be good, but it just looks like a mix of Sonic and the Secret Rings and Shadow the Hedgehog, which is a bad thing. At least you you use the nunchuck to control him this time though.

I REALLY hope this turns out to be good, but from the info I've seen so far, it looks like yet another Sonic Team failure. I'll try it out, though.

Also, when I first saw the NP cover, I read it as Sonic and the Dark Knight.  :D

It probably will be a failure, you should never give Sonic a sword. But I hope I'm wrong, 'cause I'm getting it anyway.

I missed Secret Rings, so I'll pick this one up.

It looks fun.

It's secret rings plus a sword and medival setting and more playable characters, minus all the flaws that secret rings had.

Do you HAVE to play as other characters?

All I want to play as is Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles.

Nope, you can stay as Sonic pr another character the whole time.
You press a button to switch out between characters.
So far only sonic, Knuckles and Shadow have been confirmed to be playable.
Knux wields dual blades. :)

I don't need another Sonic Heroes Sega, just a few characters that play differently from Sonic.

I just like the level design in Sonic Rush better...
everything in Adventure seemed too much "islandy" sort of thing.
It's a minor gripe both where great and I was happily surprised with Blaze. Next to old school Sonic she has jumped to be my second favorite Sonic character in the series.

As long as it isn't played like Sonic and the Secret Rings, I'll buy it.  It looks pretty good, and it just MIGHT turn out well.  I haven't played Sonic '06 (no 360 or PS3  :( ), but it sounds like the series has gone downhill.

Sonic and the Secret Rings is almost up there with Sonic 2006.

Sonic should only be on-rails for a very short time, not the entire game. And the missions didn't even advance the story line. "Don't break any of the pots"? What?

Better than a crappy Back to the Future rip-off with horrible controls and gameplay.
At least Sonic ran fast and could be steered around the rail rather than falling off edges he wasn't even near. At least the missions required some amount of skill for most of them.

I liked Secret Rings. The only thing that really annoyed me was the music...

It was good for a recent Sonic game, but it could have been better.

Nayrman, you know what happened the last time Sega gave people what they wanted? Shadow the Hedgehog. They put up polls on their sites that were basically like this:

Sega-"Hey, do you want a game starring Shadow?"

Fans-"OMGOMGOMG YES"

Sega-"Ok, do you think Shadow should have a gun?"

Fans- "OMGOMGOMG THAT WILL MAKE HIM EVEN MORE BADASS LAWL"

They suck at giving fans what they want, and they suck at telling people what they want. It's basically a coin flip to see if a game is good, and the coin weighted towards the side of suck.

I don't know a single person who thought Shadow should have guns. X_X;;
A Shadow game wasn't a bad idea, they just made the gameplay horrible.
It's called run fast through a level...it shouldn't be this hard SEGA
And Tuppy you missed my point completely X_X:;

All I know is that Sonic and the Secret Rings is one of the worst Sonic games I've ever played.

It's barely a Sonic game, all you do is steer him. The targeting is terrible, and the jumping is unresponsive. Sure, the game was fast, but I felt that it was the RAIL that was moving fast, not Sonic.

I'd rather have him on a rail than falling off edges I didn't even "steer" him near.

Why can't Sega just make a game where the camera cooperates?

Yeah, I've been waiting for an Adventure 3 for quite a while now.  Secret Rings was fun, but now I hated the story-book plot, which Black Knight will also do.  Also, a sword??  FAIL.

Sonic Unleashed is supposedly Sonic Adventure 3 (In Japan it's called Sonic World Adventure). So you may not have to wait much longer.

I will judge whether it deserves the adventure name once I've played it, from the looks of it though I highly doubt it'll be on the decent - good gameplay that was the Adventure series.

I don't care because every console game after SA2 has been bad, many of them absoultely HORRIBLE (I'm looking at YOU Shadow and Sonic 06!). If they were good I'd be happy and looking forward to them but the last 6-7 years have been horrendous in terms of console games. The handheld games have been good and fine.

Umm, Nayr, if you hate Sonic console games so much, why even come here and talk about new ones? All you ever do is...

Us: Oh cool, Sonic Unleashed looks cool.

Nayr: Its gonna suck, we all know it. Dont even bother, its what Sonic 06 was like.

Us: Sonic and the Black Knight? Wonder what it is.

Me: Its a sequel to SR but with a sword that replaces soul gauge.

Nayr: Sonic with a sword? It already sucks. I havent seen any pics or footage but I just know. I liked SR but I already hate the better sequel just because Sonic holds a sword that barely changes gameplay.

Me and Ryker: ... GTFO H8TER

I don't hate the Black Knight's gameplay since no one has seen it yet. I just hate the premise and assume since SEGA is off it's rocker at the moment, like Yahtzee said, it's better to be pessemistic for hte moment. If it's a good game, I'll gladly admit I was wrong, but based on the recent progression into horribleness it's probably better we don't have our hopes up.
And I like the current handheld games, the Advance series was great, Rush and Rush Adventure were fantastic (albeit a tad cheap with the boost but whatever) and Dark Brotherhood looks like a competant RPG (although I'm going to be playing Chrono Trigger a lot more).

please watch. I'd rather be pessemistic, and if it's great: fantastic, a great game to play! but if it's bad I don't have the dissappointment for expecting something good (see Sonic 06). It's just the way I do things, so meh,  :-\
I suppose I should just leave the thread then since no news is coming out on this game anyway...

please watch.
Be negative in your head, no one wants to hear read it.

So, the graphics are actually pretty good, despite the ones in NP looking like a Dreamcast game.

At least we get to control Sonic with the analog stick this time.

Oh, and there are other characters to play as, but you don't HAVE to play as them. Sonic Unleashed is Sonic only by the way.

Where'd you read that?
I heard that you can rarely play as others, but the game's revolving around Sonic mainly.

It was an interview.

He said that Sonic was the only playable character, but there would be other characters as part of the story.

I believe they confirmed Tails, Knuckles, and Shadow as playable in Black Knight. But you don't have to play as any of them other than Sonic if you don't want to.

I hope it's actually them this time, and not story-book characters that coincidentally look exactly like Sonic characters.  Knuckles as Sinbad and Tails as Aladdin?  Ugh.

Sonic Unleashed is supposedly Sonic Adventure 3 (In Japan it's called Sonic World Adventure). So you may not have to wait much longer.

I won't consider it "Adventure" unless Tails, Knuckles, Shadow, Rouge, and Amy are as important and as playable as Sonic.  Of course, we'll probably never get a game like that [SA1&2]; it'll be either good Sonic-stlye gameplay with a mediocre story and only Sonic OR a great story and multiple characters but not even close to good Sonic-style gameplay, but never both.  In fact, that's exactly what I see headed this fall:  if you want good gameplay but don't care about story or character, get Unleashed, and if you want good character and story but gameplay that isn't even close to Sonic perfection, get Chronicles.  That's also what I saw in 2006, with Sonic 06 having the story and Secret Rings having the gameplay.

Well, I play a Sonic game for the gameplay, so I will get Unleashed and maybe Black Knight.

Chronicles looks decent, though.

Sega was listening to people saying that they don't care about characters other than Sonic.

Black Knight will have characters other than Sonic, though.

Rush and Rush Adventure were fantastic (albeit a tad cheap with the boost but whatever)
....my eyes have to be deceiving me.
It's impossible... Nayrman can't be criticizing about something in a Sonic game that adds more speed. He always seems like he might as well be saying things like "This game is good only because of very fast speed", "All Sonic games without extremely high speed suck", "All the 3D Sonic games suck because they go too slow with the only exception being Secret Rings because its horrible controls help Sonic move faster", etc.

"albeit a TAD"
It's a minor gripe, and at least they let it run out. And Secret Rings does not have terrible controls, SONIC 06 HAS TERRIBLE CONTROLS. At least I can MOVE Sonic in SR, and the jump isn't that bad once you get used to it. Also, many of the "cheap" deaths that are blamed on controls are actually level design if people would bother paying attention to the levels while they played.

Heroes was rather slow, and it wasnt good, Shadow was slow and it sucked, Sonic 06 made Mario look like a speed demon, and that game was horrible. So yea.

Yes, you can kinda move Sonic in SR, but I'd never consider that enough moveability. I've never played 06 but have watched gameplay videos of it and played every other 3D Sonic game (other than Rivals). I will, without any hesitation, say that SR has the worst controls by far in the series.
As if paying attention to level design in SR will help you any. The weird camera angle makes things sometimes nearly impossible to see not to mention you can't ever trust what you see because of junk like invisible walls throughout the whole game.

QuoteHeroes was rather slow, and it wasnt good, Shadow was slow and it sucked, Sonic 06 made Mario look like a speed demon, and that game was horrible. So yea.
Oh, so out of what horrible things those games do have, you ignore all of them and just say the only reason those games suck is because of being slow?
Heroes: ...remind me again how that is slower than other games? It sucked because of using the team system as a gimmick, making almost all of the level be based off doing something as a specific formation, screwing up the flight and power systems, repetition for redoing all levels thrice, and Team Chaotix having odd missions.
Shadow: Once again, I don't get how this is slower than the Adventure or Genesis games. The main thing that makes this game bad in my opinion is the hero/dark mission system that is like Team Chaotix in Heroes. Guns aren't all that bad but implemented poorly.
Secret Rings: Um... sure, Sonic runs a little faster in this than other games, but why the intercourse  does it matter that much? I really doubt the speed makes up for also the things that game screwed up.

I never said there weren't other problems, you're putting words (or lack of words) in my mouth; and do not say Secret Rings is worse than Sonic 06 until you've actually PLAYED 06...and then you will know how much worse it is.
I fail to see how the controls are as bad as you put them, since all you have is lean left, lean right, jump, brake, and the two d-pad powers. As far as I can tell they're more responsive than plenty of other Wii games. Also, I agree that when the camera gets bad it's near impossible to tell where you are going, luckily since the game is on rails on a behind Sonic viewpoint most of hte time that isn't too much of an issue, espeically in missions where the game is in a looping sequence. As long as the camera isn't a total mess it's at least playable (unlike Sonic 06 where the game tends to put the camera in the worst position possible).
It's not as good as Adventure or Adventure 2, but it's a decent platformer that fixes some of the annoying problems since Heroes (bad camera, dumb gimmicks like weapons, glitches, etc.).
