Holographic data storage medium?

http://gonintendo.com/?p=51045 (http://gonintendo.com/?p=51045)

In case you don't know, holographic storage (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holographic_memory) is the medium that may eventually replace optical and magnetic storage options. InPhase is also the company releasing a drive with 300GB of memory with a transfer rate of 20MB per second. They also plan to eventually release a drive with 1.6 terabyte of memory with a transfer rate of 120MB per second.

The problem is that this requires a special drive, so this may be planned for the Wii's successor. Of course, they always could make an add-on drive or something...

That's kind of cool, but I can't see us reaping the benefits any time soon.

So, instead of opening USB ports, they'll make a 10,000 dollar hard drive.

Well, that got us far.

I honestly cant see another Nintendo system for some reason...I can just see them upgrading the Wii for about $60-$150 at a game store or Toys R' Us. At any rate, if there is going to be another, it wont happen for a long time! the Gamecube was way less sucessful and it lasted I think 7 years?

I will bet this wont be too far away.

Nintendo will continue to create new systems, simply because people will, at the very least, dump money into getting the next generation of the current system.  They'll find something to add to what currently exists, or slightly modify it, that will make the current generation system seem obsolete and in need of being replaced.

Hmmm... why does that HD seem like a big drive....  But, I can imagine it to be small as well.

Erm...  I wonder how ninty will incorporate this.

That is true.

It very might well be almost as big as the Wii itself.

Actually, I did the math and based upon what I got, they might not need to make it that big because it could hold approx. 62.5 Gbytes per sq. in.

Heck, one HDD the size of a GCN disc might do the job, who knows?

An average GCN disc held 1.6 GB.
