Question:
If you had to pick one, what type of game would you say Zelda is?
Option 1: Action-Adventure
votes: 34
Option 2: RPG
votes: 3
What kind of game is the Legend of Zelda series? I always say Action-Adventure, but people [who don't even play video games as much as I do] are always saying it's an RPG. So, I want to see what you people think it is. And no, there's no "both" option, this is an "either/or" question.
It can't be an RPG.
RPGs are way different, in RPGs, you go around like action/adventure, but touch an enemy and you go into some battle scene that contains more than just the enemy you touched. Then everyone is in an idle position and you pick your attacks and stuff.

This.
But I know someone who could put up an arguement.
i say it is both

I specifically said it was an either/or question. Pick one.
Also, I don't think it has to be turn-based to be an RPG; for example, I believe Kingdom Hearts is considered an RPG. However, I do think that you need some kind of stats--most RPGs have overall levels, along with health, attack, magic, defense, etc. in addition to held items that can increase these stats. Zelda games have HP and occasionally a MP meter with a single upgrade, and that's it; there isn't nearly enough customization for it to be an RPG.

Yes it does.

Children of Mana, Fable, Fable 2. There are pleanty RPGs without the turn based thing.
RPG means growing up levels or collecting items with alot of side quests.
Zelda is both, Cory is right.
People, get it through your skulls. RPG doesn't refer to Final Fanasy turn based battles... RPG stands for "role-playing game".
You play the role of a character, and play as them, as if they were a second you. It doesn't necessarily mean turn-based battles...
In this case, you play the role as Link, and improve and upgrade him as you progress (if you choose to do so).
Action-adventure with some residual characteristics of an RPG.
ya thats right im right it is both and for the info im CORY
Easily Action/Adventure. Sure it has some RPG elements, but nowhere near enough to consider it an RPG.
Zelda II could be considered an RPG; every other Zelda game is Action/Adventure, and any argument to the contrary is either weak or horribly flawed.
I'd say Action/Adventure.
Sure, there might be some elements, but as Cornwad said, there's not enough to consider it an RPG.
RPG's pretty much distinguish themselves by having a leveling and battle system, something that Zelda lacks.
There are some RPG elements, 1 or 2 at the most, but not enough to consider it an RPG. Heck, you don't even grow levels.
without a doubt its an action adventure game.
I would say it's an Action/Adventure. It might have some RPG elements in it, but not enough.
Zelda II was more of an RPG. You had to get experience points. Then when you got enough, you would choose to upgrade your health, attack, or magic.
I hated those experience points. >:(
Whatever PsycoYoshi said. Where is it written that RPGs are ONLY turn based? The line between action/adventure and RPGs is blurred.
The type of game Legend of Zelda is is so obvious that this thread is pretty much pointless.
Everyone agrees, in an RPG you have levels and classes, in zelda its action-adventure with some puzzle, like in the dungeons

Agreed.
Under the current "classification" system that rating places use (most namely the ESRB), Zelda is technically classified as an "Adventure/RPG".
I hardly see any RPG in this game besides the "name your character" part.
I'd say it's an Adventure/Action/Puzzle game in all.
And no, it doesn't require a turn-based battle system to be an RPG. *If you want to be really technical any game with a character is an RPG*.
It's only an RPG in the sense that it fits a couple modern RPG standards and is, of course, a game where you play another's role. But when it comes to the modern version of the genre as a whole, no, it's not an RPG.
Action/Adventure it is.
It can't possibly be an RPG for a few reasons
1. I absolutely hate RPGs and I love Zelda (the game, not the princess you sickos) so if If Zelda was an RPG the world would explode.
2. There isn't any annoying stats, turn by turn fighting, HP or MP (excluding Zelda II), or endless item configurations, and there also are no annoying party members.

None of those are technically required for a game to be an RPG. Especially not turn-by-turn fighting.
And in a way, Zelda games do feature a variation of HP and MP, just with the generic catch-alls "health" and "magic."
If we are gonna get technical. I'd have to say Action RPG.

RPG games are actually games that borrow from the pen-and-paper RPG's, such as Dungeons and Dragons; in Zelda's case, it doesn't borrow enough from the pen-and-paper games to be considered an RPG.

Earthbound doesn't have classes? If so, then what is Ness' class?
60% Action/Adventure.
25% RPG-type.
15% Puzzle-type.

Don't bump threads over a month old.
Oh, sorry. I didn't realize how old it was. I guess I shouldn't have made an assumption based on the fact that it was on the first page.
Adventure
Very much adventure with vague hints of rpg elements
RPGs tend to be more personal or customizable. with an rpg it is rare for 2 characters to be exactly the same
