Title: Stories in Video Games
Post by: Kodiack on August 20, 2008, 12:27:31 AM
Does anyone else here tend to not attach themselves to video game stories? By this, I mean how many of you don't pay much attention to what's going on and just play a game for the sake of playing a game?

I don't know why, but there are some games that just get me so involved that when a cutscene or something comes up that I just want to say "OH SHUT UP I JUST WANNA FREAKIN' PLAY!!". I honestly hope that I'm not the only one that doesn't pay a huge amount of attention to the average games' stories. Some games, like the Legend of Zelda and Tales of Symphonia, have stories that interest me. But normally I feel that stories are just all-around the same and yada yada yada.

I'll be honest, Mario games probably got me into this bad habit. It's normally the same thing through and through: Peach gets captured by Bowser, you save her, yay win! There are just too many cliches that I tire of. I want originality in stories!! :P

No, I'm not like this on a first play through. I usually do enjoy the story for the most part. But I do skip the cut scenes if I've already seen them at least once. I also like to explore every possible path to make sure that I experience all parts of the story and game.

Depends on the game really.

I pretty much always try to pay attention to the story as well as I can.

Normally I give the story a shot, but sometimes a game starts to extend itself out and the story becomes too confusing. I hate when that happens. D:

I really like a story in a game so yeah. In marathon the story is so deep, everytime I play the game I read every word in the terminals. Even if I reaqd it a gazillion times.

In other games, sometimes the cutscenes can be a pain. But if the story's good, then it doesn't matter for me.

Ooh, I hate it when someone gets mad at the story being present and skips dialog or even worse.. when someone tries to skip a cut scene!

It's unthinkable!

I'm very into the whole experience of gaming, including any story elements there may be in any particular game.

I always pay attention to the story in games. In Okami, I kept my eyes glued to the screen during every cut scene :P

I love watching what happens next.

It really depends on the game.

In RPGs, the story is practically everything.
FPS can sometimes have a story, but it depends if would be good or not.
Adventure games (like Mario) just needs the basic storyline. It's all about the gameplay in this genre.

Meh. I don't really care about them.
And I like the Mario game plots. :)
It's always the same, but I like it like that. And plus, unless it's a Mario RPG game, what other plot could it even need?

Depends. I'll play through the MGS and Ace Attorney throughly since they are more story based then say Zelda or Sonic.

Games like Fire Emblem, I love to read the story. It's what molds the game, really.

I can't avoid the story.  It calls me, even if it's really bad.

That's the problem with me. I just can't pay attention to bad stories. There are a few games that I really got into story-wise. The Zelda games, Paper Mario games (except for Super Paper Mario :\), and some very well-written stories such as BioShock. Sure, keeping your eye out for details can be a bit tedious, and that's the reason that I only do so with well-written games.

So yeah, well-written games. How rare are they? Extremely rare. :(

The fact that any one can just ignore the main story in a game makes me sick!

without the story what purpose do you serve? to just make it to the next level? pish posh!

I hate it when someone just mashes the [a] button just to get through the parts where people "talk too much!"

Some of you really need to learn to be patient and read through the story! The developers didn't put it in the game for kicks! They put it in there for our enjoyment!! now appreciate it!

example:
guy1: Dude, what are you doing?
guy2: fighting these monsters with mah lazor!
guy1: Why?
guy2: I don't know...

Well, I need to get more games with a good story. I'm just tired of all this watered-down stuff. Then again, I haven't played through any games with anything worthwhile for quite a long time. I got a Wii, and right now I only have Super Mario Galaxy, Super Paper Mario, Mario Kart Wii, Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Link's Crossbow Training. Yeah, none of those have real thrilling stories off the bat. Still, I paid attention to all the text in Super Paper Mario. I kept track of the story, even if the text started to drag on past its welcome. It's times like that where I just want to get back to playing. :\

Yeah, I'm kind of picky, but I do give all games a chance when it comes to their plot. Speaking of skipping stuff, I don't do that. I read all the text and watch all the cut scenes, even if they're very bland. There are some games where I just can't skip text or cut scenes because it's so great, though. Resident Evil 4 and Oblivion come to mind. :P
