I am going to be looking into getting a laptop or desktop computer for High School use... but I'm horribly deficient at these kinds of things so I need a suggestion on what to get!
My parents aren't any more informed than me, and they say a desktop is the way to go.
More bang for the buck.
But I would rather have a laptop that is portable and easy to maneuver among books and papers as I do my homework and need to type.
So, any ideas on something powerful, affordable, and basically not a complete piece of poop?
Newegg.com, Acer. There are some that are pretty cheap and decent.

This looks decent and seems to fit my needs nicely.
1GB of Ram (Same as my current desktop oddly enough :()
Decent sized screen, and I'll be needing that.
Comes with Vista, and I'm a little apprehensive on that... but I might have my XP disk sitting around here somewhere...
120GB memory... pretty decent and its not like I'll use it all
It has some kind of built in camera... meh
But the selling point is ironically the price... $500 isn't too shabby at all for what it seems like I'm getting... what is your guys reaction? D:
according to one of the reviews this notebook isn't compatible with XP
Vista isn't that bad so get over it.

Except for the fact that 1GB of Ram supposedly won't be enough to run the OS properly. ;-;

Yeah...get 2GB.
I thought laptop had less memory than a desktop. I was wrong when I compared the downstairs desktop to my current laptop. You can even buy an external hard-drive if you need more space.
If you get a laptop, get a wireless mouse, or make sure the USB port is in a comfortable place. Trust me. My mom's mouse's cord is a little too long, and the USB cord is not in a comfortable place.
You should get a laptop, though. I love laptops and would never go back to a desktop. You can use it anywhere you want and it's really convenient.

MacBook
You should get a Packard Bell on Windows '95. Those things are ridiculously efficient, and they'll last forever.
