Title: Tales of Symphonia 2: Dawn of a New World. - My Review- Spoilers!
Post by: StarWindWizard7 on November 15, 2008, 11:19:42 PM
Yeah, silly title.
I hope this goes here on the board.

I never written a review before, so I think I"ll start with a game I been looking for, For years.
(years in me hoping that they would come out to a sequal to Tales of Symphonia).
*Note, I just picked up the game, but I played over 35 hours of it, I think I can make a review atleast from the beginning. 1st impressions are important! ^-^

Graphics
Game Play/Controls
Sound/Music
Story/Longevity
Overall
10 being High while 1 is of course Low, a.k.a. FAIL

Now, this OF course is my Opinion and it's probably biased, but I'll be just as honest as can be.

Graphics: For the Nintendo Wii, honestly, it could be better... Really.
I know Nintendo Wii isn't about "Grahphics" but yeah like -Get with the Times- Nintendo.
Do you think in 6-15 years from now, Consumers will still buy your games if the graphics are..um...
extremely out dated?!
NO!
This games graphics can be a lot better, it Fails to truly take advantage of what I"m sure the Wii Can do.
Now, I'm not asking for Draw dropping realistic graphics, but these graphics are just a Minuscule level Above Game Cube graphics.
Very disappointing to say the least. Is this what we are to be expected from Long awaited games such as this?
I hope not!
I don't think this game is a "Casual Gamers" game. So why cut people like ME (who look forward to hard core games) Short? You want your games to sell? Make it Beautifully Attractive. Put that Extra Effin Effort into your work and be proud of it.

-Now of course, Good Graphics don't make a good game great (but it helps), still and all, TOS2 is still a very beautiful colorful/lively game.
The spell affects/attacks and what not are very nice. Can get blurry when it gets Crazy, but the battle ends kind of quickly to where your like, "Oh wow, ok...".
Will this games grahpics "WOW" me as I play on? Only time will tell.

So, thus far, for an open presentation on graphics it gets a
6.9 (aww)

Game Play/Controls:

Wow, I have to use the Wii Remote/Nun chuck? Booo! I do not wish to use this. I wish to use
the normal Game Cube controller. The controller I Mastered Tales of Symphonia with. Blahhh!
Whats this? You added a point and click system to the game using the "Sorcerers Ring"? Mmmm ok, thats
cool I suppose. I guess the Wii remote comes in handy here.

Whats that? You also added minor motion sensitivity to the game? Very nice...however not needed.
When it comes to games like this, how about giving a player the option of playing with either the Wii Remote/Nun chuck or the game cube controller? No harm in being versatile.

Now of course, the controls game play will vary from person to person.
Some people will catch on as to how to fight, while it may take others more time/practice.
My time was Medium honestly. Trying to bring my skills over from the 1st game was kind'a difficult, but I knew what I was doing (or trying to do).
The controls are very tricky, but the more you fight, the better accustom you'll get to how the game normally plays. Things tend to work in your favor, cause after all, you have a brain and you should be able to use common sense.

Oh, that monster is about to attack me, let me hold the block button (Z) down to avoid Massive Damage which will be "Super Affective" against me! :~0

The added system of assigning "SKILL POINTS" is....... umm... all right. I don't think this feature is truly needed though. A nice touch however.

WTH, Why is the Exploration of the Map not in this game?!
Now, yeah, I heard/read WHY the creator of TOS2 took it out, but I forgot what he said/why he did take it out.
*sighs*
Point is...that having the Exploration part of the game is important. This is an Adventure Game, I want to feel like I'm on an adventure of my life. I don't want my character to "calmly/carelessly" walk from 1 spot to another as if he was driving a car on the Map! I want to see a monster on the field and DESTROY It! >:( Dab blasted!

*coughs*
Now, we can talk about "MONSTERS".
I really like this feature. (though other games have done this before, and done it better I Heard).
But atleast for a game like this, it really brings a unique touch. Spider vs Spider! Or Bunny vs a Bear (Oh My!)
And that bunny will knock the stuffin out of the bear if it's powerful enough, trust me.
You'll be hearing "one, two" punches every 2-5 seconds. :D
I'm sure there are more secrets (from reading the book atleast) that I don't know yet but will know eventually.

Also, collecting monsters and trying to Pursued them to be on your team is also a very cool feature.
Say it with me, "Got to catch em on! Pokemon" except, these things fight with you.
Don't be surprised if you pick a fav and he'll always fight with you, usually.
I wish you can have more then what you can at one time to fight with you though.
Oh well...wishful thinking.

*coughs again* Though, you don't HAVE to have monsters with you, you can always have human players which honestly to me seems to be better. But what ever, it's your choice. I'm sure in the game you have to have monsters fight with you.

Good luck finding the Chef as you'll need him to level up your monster pals.
*also, not 100% sure, but you can control your monsters to a point. I'm not interested in fighting as a monster
seeing as they are kind of limited to attacks, but again... whatever.

Gameplay/Controls:
8.1
(the monsters helped) :P

Sound/Music:

Yeah, this isn't a final fantasy orchestra musical game here. It's pretty simple.
Having SLIGHTLY remixed versions of the songs from the 1st Tales of Symphonia, which is Honestly fine by me.
It makes me smile as I remember hearing the same background music as I did when I played Tales of Symphonia years ago.
Asgard! Thats MY City! City of the Wind! So yeah, I enjoyed that very much.
Going from what I went through so far, the music will more then likely be the same from the 1st game.
ALL of the music. >__>

From the Funny parts where the music is happy/weird/hilarious to Emo/Death/Despair music where it's just kind of like...."ohhh nooo!" (if you really get into the game like that).
True die hard fans of this game will know what I'm talking about. ;)

Music gets a 7.5
(It could be better, but as I said, lack of effort)

Story/Longevity:

This will also vary from person to person. I'm not 1 of those MAD crazy gamers that try to finish a game in less then 24 hours and then be through with it.

I'm the opposite. I'll put over 600 hours in this game if need be, and that is just from fighting a lot.
I fought over 500 battles before I even reached the 3rd dungeon. Heck, I haven't even beaten the 2nd one Under the Dais, a Ruin in Asgard.

*I read that this games story line is very thick.

Good and bad about thick story lines.
Good is that you can play the game longer and it doesn't leave you like it wasted your Life/Time.
Bad because it can be TOO Stuffy and over confusing. (which the 1st ToS game did to me, until I beat it over 5 times until I understood things BETTER) But thats just me.

Because I only lightly touched the surface of the story of this game, I can't give it a true review ...
Heck yeah, I Will. Because for me, this game will last me until  February. :D

Story/Longevity
9.5

Over all:
Because I'm a fan of this Specific Tales game, despite all the negativity I might of said about it there is more
to love about this game then to hate.
It's retail price is Atleast $39.99 which is $10.00's cheaper then a normal Video game from Nintendo so thats a plus I guess.

If your fan's of the 1st game and willing to relive a lot of memories plus a lot of twists, this game is for you.
(atleast it should! Whats wrong with you eh!)  >:(

Heck, after I beat this game, maybe I"ll change my mind and give this game a perfect 10!

*Looks @ Nintendo*
Pfft, Yeah, not gonna happen.

Final Score
9.0
