Title: Sonic Unleashed Review from IGN
Post by: Neerb on November 19, 2008, 06:48:04 PM
7.5/10 on Wii.

http://wii.ign.com/articles/931/931596p1.html

Here's a quick summary:  Night levels are terribly boring, as they are both long and repetitive (looks like you called that one, Nayrman).  However, the game is saved from failure due to the Day levels, which make for the best Sonic gameplay ever, and by the music, which has finally become enjoyable level-enhancing music instead of crappy attempts at 80s rock.  So, it's definitely worth buying if you're a Sonic fan (and this is just the Wii version; imagine how good the stronger, better-looking, Sonic Team-developed 360/PS3 versions will be!), but be ready to trudge through disappointing night levels.  I personally will be getting the 360 version.

I like the end statement they make:  "Come on -- if you're a Sonic fan, you should be used to sacrifice and suffering by now, anyway."

I agree with the end statement.
Actually, many online sources (including IGN) are saying the Wii version is the most fun.
Also, the Wii/PS2 versions are "significantly" different from the PS3/360 versions. Although I highly doubt that other than graphical power (which honestly I couldn't care less as long as it looks good on the Wii). I actually like the music from the Adventure series X_X;; Not saying anything is wrong with the new stuff but a few rock tracks would be nice. Ah well, minor gripe since the music is still good.
Oh...yea...

AND I SO CALLED THE WAREHOG LEVELS!!!!!!!!

Hmm, maybe you tried to say Warehouse?

It's Werehog.

Getting the 360 version, but trying out the Wii one. I want to see how the "Hedgehog Engine" works in practice.

The Werehog levels look boring. They don't appear to have anything MAJORLY wrong with them in terms of glitches, but the Werehog looks so slow. Which is not why I play a Sonic game. If I wanted slow, clunky combat, I would play a mech game.

Heh, better than I expected. Nonetheless, Sonic Team has been stepping it up lately.

Oh contrare mon amis,
I have the Wii version, played it for about seven hours today (I only had classes til like 11 a.m. today), got through the final boss (obviously I'm no where near completely through with the game), and I'll have my full review tomorrw.
I'll just say this though:
Everything BUT the speed levels SUCK MASSIVELY. I'll elaborate in the review tomorrow, but the Warehog is ATROCIOUSLY HORRIBLY GOD DAMN WORSE THAN SONIC 06 ABSOLUTEY TRAGICALLY *insert adjective here* S-H-I-T!
Speed levels, are really fun...if a bit hard to get used to control wise. And guess what, Chip is actually a decent character  :robotsurprised:
Again, I'll elaborate much more in the youtube review tomorrow...  ;D

I knew Chip would be good, he looks like good comic relief.

Wow, that bad? I knew it was going to be bad, but I thought it was going to be "Okay, let's get this over with" and not "Please, not again *sigh*" bad.

Just rented the Wii version.

Nayr, you over exagerate WAAAAAAAAAAAAY too much.

The werehog levels aren't that bad....

But they're not as great as the day levels.....

And yeah, Chip is like the only decent new character.

Silver sucks.

oh intercourse  off. I don't see how it matters.

OH, and yes the "Were"-hog *screw you* levels are THAT bad. It wouldn't be so bad if they were only there every once in a while, but they take up SO MUCH of the game it's ridiculous

So, just played it for a while today, and I must say, it feels like two separate games.

The speed levels are awesome, but I felt like I was playing a really bad PS1-era platformer with the Werehog levels.

I'll probably buy it for the speed levels and hope that the werehog levels aren't as bad as everyone says.  Maybe sonic and the black knight won't be as bad, since giving Sonic a sword shouldn't be as much of a gimmick as forcing Sonic to bash some skulls in slow nighttime levels.

The become less aggrivating after you beat the game and can choose the levels as you please.
However, when you're playing story mode they're quite annoying.
Do you have a 360/PS3? It'd be a good idea to wait to see what people think of those first.

Because like Nintendo, SEGA is lazy as poop and doesn't like to try anymore.
Yea, the Wii is missing two whole levels (Mizuri and the City level), and there are more day challenges in the PS3/360 versions.
Something tells me I'll enjoy that version a lot more. Luckily the PS3 version comes out the day I get out for winter break/last final ^_^

The Wii version actually is the worst one, simply because it's missing so much.

Wow.

The 360 is SOOOOOOOOOOO much better than the Wii one. They left out pretty much everything in the Wii version, and it could have easily done it all. Even the nighttime stages are fun, and the daytime stages are even better.

I feel sorry for anyone that the Wii/PS2 version is their only option.

Well, you know how in the Wii version, one button attacks left and one attacks right? It alternates automatically in this version. Plus, it has Unleashed Power, which isn't Super Sonic, but it is fun.

Oh, and there's a stage while traveling from continent to continent by plane and it's kind of like Space Channel 5 in the fact that it requires timed button presses. In fact, there's a boss fight that revolves around that principle.

The Speed levels just seem to run smoother and faster. That's probably the Hedgehog Engine at work.

Yeah, the tails flying minigame is so much fun...

It's like Sega used all thier budget on the 360 ver. :P
They could have done so much more, they pretty much cut out entire stages in the Wii version.

Oddly, IGN hasn't even reviewed the 360 version yet... except Australian IGN, which gave it a 6.0 (but then again they could think the Wii version is a 4)

It's always the UK site to give it a lower rating than everyone else. The American and Australian scores are usually within like two or three points, but when the American site rates it like an 8.5, the UK site rates it 7.8.

Actually Java_Java, you should get the Wii version, all the popular reviewers reviewed the game and the Wii version got better than the others. I might even get it for Christmas.

They pointed out a lot of things...

The 360 version is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much better than the Wii.
I don't even know why stupid reviewers scored the 360 ver. so low.....

The wii version is the inferior version.

because the PS2's processor is even slower than the Wii's so Sonic moves even SLOWER than he does in the Wii version. Why anyone would buy the PS2 copy is just beyond me...

From what I heard from you guys, 360 sounds a lot better, but all/most of the reviews say Wii is a lot better, so I wanna see what I like better.

Wow, I just lost any remaining respect I had for IGN.

The Werehog levels are bad, but that on its own doesn't lower to worse than Sonic 2006. There's NO WAY that Sonic Unleashed is worse than Sonic 2006, a game that has NO redeeming qualities except for MAYBE the graphics.

I do have a feeling Sega added the werehog to flesh out the game because the game out be like three hours long without it. But the only thing I agreed with IGN in that review was that I would rather have the game be three hours long and be all good than be ten hours long and have half of it be mediocre.

IGN is full of dumbasses that review games low probably because it's sequels were bad.

Sonic Unleashed: 4.5
Sonic 2006: 4.8

The PS3 version of '06 DID get a 4.2, but those are the 360 scores.

Even Drift was better than 06...
GameInformer is even worse. They said Secret Rings was worse than 06.... sorry, there is no way in hell SR is worse than 06.
But as I've said a lot of times, you can't spell ignorance without IGN....

No really....

IGN is full of dumbasses that review games low probably because it's sequels were bad.
I guess they have a grudge against Sega or something. :|

Btw, there are more than 1 missions in each day level.

Why can't reviewers just look at the game itself, not the entire series when they review a game? Just take the game for what it is, IGN. Hey, it's at least better than Sonic 2006. Oh, wait...  :|

Did they score unleashed lower than '06?
If they did, thats completely intercourse ing retarded.

They did.

Sonic Unleashed: 4.5
Sonic 2006: 4.8

The PS3 version of '06 DID get a 4.2, but those are the 360 scores.

What the hell were they smoking when Playing unleashed??
I guess they suck at it, and then complain about the game... : |

I think I know why the Wii version got a bigger score:

From Wikipedia:

"The added element of motion controls for the Werehog sections, as well as text-based hub worlds and better Werehog level design and camera system, were reasons cited for the higher review scores for the Wii version of the game."

So hub-worlds where you can explore are not Sonic's thing.

Also, I got the game, very good in the day levels and night levels are good, though I'd have liked the night levels to be shorter.

I like hub worlds, but I guess I could live without them, 'cause my sis is gettin' me Sonic Unleased (Wii) for a late Christmas present~
I also hate how it has less levels then the PS3/360 version... But I'll get over it.

I've played both versions, the motion controls are HORRENDOUS. There is zero need for them, and it makes the game even harder to control. I don't get what these ppl are on thinking it makes the game better.

So people, what's the difference in the Werehog Levels that make it better on the 360/PS3?

Gameplay is better.
The fighting is at least a knock-off of a good series (God of war) than mindless button mashing, and the platforming is at least playable unlike the Wii version where you fall off and die through no fault of your own dozens of times.

Wii = mindless Button mashing with terrible motion controls or terrible Gamecube controls.
360/PS3 = ripoff of God of War minus the fun of GoW, and some generic platforming.

I played my sister's; she's still in the tutorial levels, I believe.  The controls seem a little harder than SA2:B's, especially because of the dashing thing with tapping the control stick, and X does something different other than work as a second B button (GCN controller).

I mostly like the dashing thing, it's like steering a car. Wheeeeee!  ;)

I dunno why I'm postin this here, but I finally S-ranked all of the Day levels (minus Eggman-Land, because it's just so poorly deseigned and has Werehog as most of it).

All I can say is Shamar is a ninny...
What's everyone's favorite and least favorite levels?
Favorite: Spagonia: It's just so well made, the music is good, and it's just a fun level once you have it memorized.
Least Favorite: Shamar: The city is just too claustrophobic, the people are harder than rocks for some reason, and the falling pillers always hit unless you slow down.

That's just me though

I love Spagonia cause it's the fastest; you can just hold boost during the whole thing, and the buildings everywhere really help with the sense of speed.  I also love Holoska cause running on water is awesome.  However, I can't say their my favorites, as they're too easy (though that's the whole reason for the ability to boost through the whole thing).

And yes, Shamar is annoying.  I hate running into people.  However, I have been getting better at it, so now it's just annoying instead of infuriating.

Just a tip, I've found constantly drifting for some reason makes then as hollow as air. I've sometimes gone strait through them! It screws up your precision turning massively, but it'll keep you from getting stuck on people. That's how I got my S rank...that and being able to luckly avoid all falling pillars miraculously. I suppose you could use the restart trick as well if you were really desperate X_X;;

Favourite: Apotos/Spagonia

Least fav. : Shamar.

I don't really like adabat too much either.
Mainly because of frame rate, and the run on water parts.
I always intercourse  up there.

My cousin found a really, really easy way of running on water:  tapping the boost instead of just holding it.  You boost just fast enough to stay afloat, then let go (but keep running) to allow better vision and easy turns, then boost again, then let go, etc.  Adabat's water parts are easier than land parts if you do it this way.

I figured that out myself. Actually you can use the drifting trick as well, but it's harder to use since theres more stuff in the way and if you hit it it's instant death. However, if you know the layout really well you can use drift trick to get through it rather easily XD

This game is pretty good. I have it for the Wii. I really enjoy the day levels because they go back to Sonic Adventure roots a little bit and that's an improvement. The night levels however are a bit overkill. The controls are very wonky and are difficult to get used to. The fighting style was a good idea, but they didn't expand on it enough. Not to mention there are more night levels than day levels. Overall I give this game an 8.5/10. I am a huge Sonic fan and this game is incredible. There are only a few drawbacks as I mentioned but don't get me wrong, this game is awesome. I highly recommend getting this game!

Yeah I've seen some of the 360 version, and graphic wise totally awesome. It just sucks that the 360 and PS3 always get the better end of the bargain especially in the Guitar Hero series. In GHWT the gems look different in the 360 version and on the Wii the gems look almost exactly like GH3. I know it's kind of knit picking but that's just a minor example.
