Title: Musical Skills
Post by: RedYoshi on January 27, 2009, 07:27:21 PM
I was just wondering who all the musicians are out there. What musical skill(s) do you guys have?

Music is a huge part of my life and I've been making music since I was about 2 years old. I play the piano pretty heavily and I've been playing for the last 15 years of my life. I play a lot of video game music of course but I really enjoy playing the classical pieces from Beethoven, Mozart, Bach, Chopin, and many others. I have been taking piano lessons for most of my life and being able to play an instrument is just a wonderful thing and it's one of the best ways to let out your emotions. I also play some electric guitar. I've been playing for about 3 months and I'm pretty good at it, but I definitely prefer the piano because that's my forte if you will. (lol "forte" musical terminology humor...yeah that was a cheap shot I'll admit)

I joined band this year, the one before I graduate. It made me realize that I should have been doing it long before now as well.

I play trombone, but am not very good. We're playing some really cool stuff though and I'm able to do it so long as I write all the slide positions on my music.

I can sing, I think I sing okay, but everybody that has heard me says i'm great. But thats just friends and family, so I dunno.

I can play some piano. I first started playing the piano a few years ago in the Summer at my grandparents house in Arizona, they have this really nice piano in their main living room, so every Summer I went there i'd practice. I'm still not all that great though, I can just barely play "Everytime" by Britney Spears on the piano :P

I can also play the guitar, ...barely. I pretty much know the basics and a few simple songs, but thats it.

I love to sing. I know a person is skeptical when someone says they can sing well, but I think I've got a pretty good voice. I love to sing in choirs, and in high school I was involved in the regular choir and the 'elite' choir, oooooo.

I can play piano. I quit taking lessons in grade 7, and now only play what I feel like, but I love music theory. I LOVE it. I should go out and buy a bunch of theory books just to sit around and do them. :B I think it bothers my friends when I point out all the little nuances and incorrect notes when we listen to music. Ha haa..

I'm also a talented percussionist. I like to say I have a metronome in my head, since I'm fairly adequate at keeping time. I took band in junior high, but in high school I didn't because I didn't like the way the conductor couldn't keep time. |: So I occasionally play djembe for various choirs and stuff.

I've played bass since 3rd grade, so a little under 8 years. I'm attempting guitar also.

I'm also in a band, I only sing small stuff but I've written about 30-40 songs, and counting.

Sweet! Looks like a lot of musicians here, that's awesome! I'm not in any kind of band, but I was able to participate in a Jazz festival 2 years in a row. I played the piano with an actual jazz band, complete with a sax player, drummer, a bassist, and me on the piano. Jazz is one of my favorite styles of music,  a lot of freestyle; I also really enjoy playing ragtime music like Scott Joplin.

Been playing trumpet for five years, currently a freshmen, but my skills are a bit higher than that. For example, our director was comparing me to our jazz band bassist, who's been playing for one year. He said that that put him on at a 6th grade level, technically, while how I've been playing for five puts me at a freshman level, but he added that I play more at a sophomore or junior level. I love the confidence boosts. ^_^ I love anything that sounds cool, pretty much. Be it classical or jazz. Whatever sounds cool. :p

Also dabble in bass and guitar, mainly bass.

My main musical talent is the Piano. After 5 (4? I can't remember...) years, I'm finally starting to get the hang of it, plus it's also integrated into my gaming skills now...so yeah.

I've also started playing the Ocarina as of...one month ago. =|

Throughout my school years, I have taken both choir and band. I liked choir, but I didn't like band too much because all of my band teachers were whores. I still learned to play the trumpet, though.

I have also been playing drums for years, now. Beating objects with sticks is fun.
I've also had some training on guitar. I'm better at drums.

I sing often. I can't help it.

I own a drum kit. Don't use it much, but I can play.

I have a beautiful acoustic guitar that's been played on and off for a couple of years.

I've played the piano, violin, and trumpet. I quit all of them though. The most experience I had out of all of them is the piano. Violin I had like one or two years of experience. And the trumpet I've had about three I think. I can't remember how much I had with the piano, but I've lost almost all skill. I had very little skill to begin with anyways. But I want to start learning again, even though it's kinda late. People with piano skills have made me envy them so I kept telling myself to start up again. I envy your skills RedYoshi. I wish I had never quit.

I play euphonium, piano, and sing, and am taking band (and marching band in fall, although i would still take it even if it weren't required for reg. band since i love it) choir, and jazz band (plus taking ap music theory).
Euphonium is by far my favorite instrument, to me it's easiest and seems the most natural in a way, dunno, i just love it. Hopefully i can make a carrier of it ^^.  I like to sing in choir and stuff, and i've done that since elementary school as well as euph. Piano i've only been learning for about 2-3 years or so, but it's fun. I'm not that good at it, but i do enjoy it.

Uhh... I can play a LITTLE bit of piano (does the Doogie Howser M.D. Theme count...?)

Oh yeah, I can sing. Well, I could sing, but my voice is being stupid right now. I should be able to sing well again in a few months. Hopefully. But anyway, I like to sing. I think I'm good (when my voice isn't stupid).

I have an acoustic and an electric guitar, but I can't really play them that well. D: Having small hands does not help with playing musical instruments.

Used to play the piano up until this year.

Played since I was probably 3 or 5, can't remember.  Mostly because my parents wanted me to, was going to quit in the 8th grade, but then I started winning.  Won the grade 6 medal in grade 9, won the grade 7 medal in grade 10 along with the duet medal (iirc), won the duet medal in grade 11, came second place for the medal for grade 8 in grade 11, won two scholarships in grade 12, and I think I scored another medal in there somewhere as well.  the scholarships weren't worth much, one for 100, another for 100 but split 8 intercourse ing ways :\

I ended up being a juggernaut in SE Manitoba piano, but I left the southeast this year.  Never won the trophy, came in second place every time I got a medal.

intercourse ing useless.

Every year except the last I was second place to a guy a year younger than me (an awesome guy who obviously put in more effort than me but liked the music less, it just came to me naturally and I liked it).  Every single year except the last, in which I didn't win the trophy because it usually goes to a grade 10 instead of a grade 9.

Always second fiddle.

That's mah life.

and I played trumpet for our regular band in grades 7 8 and 9 and for our jazz band in grades 8 and 9, both years of which we won awards for.

I've known how to play piano since the 2nd grade, but I quit in high school (lack of interest).
I had talent though, I just didn't care for it after a while.
I was also a percussionist in high school for the band and marching band. I was one of the better players, only because I had a lot of music experience before.

I make experimental electronic music, mainly noizecore and speedcore lately.

I just made a song that gets up to 800 BPM and has samples of Tom Green flipping out over a loon and James Joyce reading a part of Finnegans Wake in reverse.

I sing, it's just not very good. (;_;)
Honestly, I wish I could sing.

I played the piano for a few years when I was about 7 - 10 years old, but I had terrible teachers who loved to scream at me. I couldn't take it after a few years, so I quit piano.

I also played guitar for about 3 years, but I was never very good unfortunately, so I dropped that in 8th grade.

Now, I'm regretting that I can't play any musical instrument, but I'd love to take up piano again.

Some tips for singing I learned from my vocal coach:

To sing well, you have to breath properly. Always stand up straight, helps with the lungs. Your voice is like a muscle, you have to strengthen it. You can improve your voice fast if you have a vocal coach, but if not, it could take years D:

And for gods sake, don't strain your voice, or you could not be singing for a while...

I just don't have the natural talent for singing.
Either way, my voice cracks way too much in order for me to sing properly in the first place.

Mabe your voice just isn't fully developed yet. Anybody can sing. It just takes a lot of practice and confidence, like I said, you just have to really take the time to train those muscles.

It does take some natural talet, sure, but you really need practice and confidence to be a good singer.

everyone can sing, not everyone can sing well.

I know my notes, I can keep beat, but my range is extremely limited (I have at most an octave and a half of range).  I can find a note instantly if it's played on the piano.

However, of all the good singers I know, very, very few of them can find the note when it's played on piano without searching for it.  This is because they don't have much formal training in other musical instruments.

No way.

First of all, they're all pretty good renditions. Second of all, I taught myself how to play the Mario theme, too (I'm guessing you taught yourself since it's one handed). I also taught myself some other Mario songs (maybe I'll make a video for the sake of this thread).

I play the trombone. This is my 5th year playing. I enjoy playing it, but I could be a lot better if I practiced on a regular basis. xP
I have dabbled in the trumpet, but I have to write the fingerings in to play almost anything without pausing. Same goes for the french horn. I french horn is a lot easier for me to play since the embouchure is similar to the trombone's.

In elementary school music class, the teachers asked me sometimes if I play piano since they thought I read sheet music so easily or whatever.
In middle school, I played viola for like two years, then quit since I don't really like string instruments.
I just got a keyboard for Christmas, and I've never seriously tried playing piano before, but I intend to sometime get around to it. Maybe take piano class at school.

Basically, I have no decent experience in playing music D=

People tell me I sing pretty well. I was in choir at my school for four years and got a solo part every time I tried out for one. I've also sang in three weddings, and had people come up to me and say "I had no idea you could sing!" And when I was in choir, everyone else in my section always listened to me if they couldn't figure out their part. So, uh, I guess those are good signs... but I don't really like to sing in front of people unless I'm in a choir. :)

As far as instruments go, I can play parts of four songs on the piano: all but one section of the Super Mario theme, pretty close to all of the Dr. Mario "fever" song, Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring (not much of this one but I like to use what I know as a warmup), and I recently learned part of a Pirates of the Caribbean song... if you have the book it's called "He's a Pirate." And that is about it.
