I just got it, and the 360's warranty expired a year before I even bought it (I got it refurbished... I'd think that would mean it couldn't get the ring, but apparently it can).
Anyone know if I can get it fixed w/o a warranty?
Also, just in case, does anyone know how much GameStop would pay if I sold it in?
Yeah you can send it in, but you'll have to pay for repairs. Don't quote me on this, but they might renew your warranty after it's fixed since it is the RRoD.
Gamestop would probably not take it for much, send it in for repairs, and sell it and make a good profit. It might be better just to send it in & pay.

Gogogo!
Wrap it in a towel and let it run for 20-30 minutes. It works :0).

How can the towel thing ruin it if it already had the RRoD?

Good question.
Thankfully, I haven't got the ring. Yet.

The towel overheats the system, causing the loose part (cause of RRoD) to shift back into position temporarily.
Temporarily.
This overheating and cooling will mess with other components of your X-box that weren't broken before, and can cause breakdowns that can't be repaired.
Plus, if you tell them you did it (or even if you don;t sometimes o_o) your warranty is voided.
Its a quick fix that will either work or ruin your X-box.
Stupid idea at any rate.

So... what exactly causes the RRoD?
Is it a certain part?
It doesn't matter for me because my warranty is expired.

HTA is right, it can damage other parts, doesn't always though. The thing should last a while now anyway.
Yes, A cheap 45mm washer somewhere on it causes the problem, if you bust in there and put a 60mm one in it actually stops the problem in that area :>. If your GPU or something fries though that does nothing.
Also the towel thing is worth it because the last I remember it costs around $100 to get it MS repaired. You can get a console only on eBay for less that that :D.
