(Sonic's levels are very fast paced, about the same as Unleashed. Tails's are a bit longer and require a bit of flying.)
Sonic Story:
The story opens at the beach. Sonic is lazily walking when he notices an airship pass by. Wanting to see what it is, he takes off in that direction. Stage-Ocean Beach. After running after it for a short time, Sonic jumps on it and boards. He makes his way to the entrance, and is just about to enter when he sets off a security alarm. The pilot, realizing there is an intruder, quickly does a barrel roll, sending Sonic to the forest below, unconscious. Sonic wakes up about an hour later to find himself in the Mystic Ruins Forest. Stage-Mystic Jungle. Sonic stopps just in time to see Slasher, a captain in Eggman's Army, tackle Tails, knocking him unconscious. You come to Tails's rescue. Boss-Slasher. After you defeat him, Sonic rushes to Tails, who is regaining counsciousness. Sonic asks what happened. Tails sighs, and begins to tell the story.
Tails's Story
The story opens with Tails beside the entrance of Eggman's Lab, in the heart of the Mystic Ruins. Stage-Mystic Ruins Lab. He discovers some ancient data at the control room. As soon as he leaves the room, however, he is found out. He then rushes out of the lab, Tails takes a breather. He suddenly hears commands and sees faint shadows. "There he is!". Hearing this, Tails takes off near the jungle. Stage-Mystic Ruins. Tails runs and runs from them, but as soon as he enters the jungle, he sees the airship. He then is cheap shoted the Mystic Ruins Lab Commander, Slasher, knocking Tails unconscious. Tails wakes up to see Sonic, who is wondering what happened. Tails sighs, and begins to tell the story.

Seems a bit slow... I mean, it's two levels in and nothing's really even happened yet. Most Sonic games would have had more than this in the opening cutscene.
