I was actually pondering the purchase of a PS3, until I read that they no longer run PS2 games with backward compatibility :|. I might buy one on eBay that will play them.

Pwnt.
Meanwhile, I'm using PS2 saves from online on a PS3. > : D
Who said that?
My PS3 is backward compatible with most of my PS2 games (only some obscure 3rd party ones have problems)
Actually, I found out it's not that it isn't backwards-compatible, it's that a small number of games freeze, crash, and lag the crap out of your system.

Says it has no PS2 compatibility, but some for some PS1 titles.

That's only for 80 and 160 GB. You don't even need that much anyhow, just get a 40 GB.

If I was going to buy any system used it would be a 60 or 80 GB because they have backwards compatibility.
Up until mid last year, PS3's were made that had at least some PS2 backwards compatibility. They have since then stopped working to see what still works or include support for PS2 games with the PS3. If they still work in your PS3, awesome. If not, Sony doesn't give a poop.
