An SR/OLF topic I found interesting enough to share here...which is weird.
QuoteGeorge Washington became president because he did a bad thing (and told the truth about it)
Johnny Appleseed traveled the world
The most nonsensical thing is teaching kids that Columbus called the Native Americans "Indians" (let alone the lies we learn about him). Why is that relavent? Today the average person refers to a Native American as an Indian.
Why even have history class in grade school?
Obviously, there are more elements than that - the Stork, sex in general, Santa, Vietnam (no joke), Canadian treatment of Natives, etc.
I'm really interested to see your reasoning for why we are often less than truthful to kids. Also, anyone see the irony in the double standard we create?
Yeah, but you should draw the line between things like "Indians" and things like the Stork and Santa. The former have absolutely no place in teaching, but things like the Stork and Santa Claus create a sense of wonder in small children that translates to a more curious and inventful view of the world, as opposed to the dry view that the children would obtain if only given cold hard facts.
