Title: How do you learn?
Post by: HTA! on March 18, 2009, 03:19:02 PM
When I'm sitting in a class, unless the teacher is engaging I will usually fall asleep.

Except for math. Math has always been my thing, my most powerful subject (101% last quarter ninnyes).
But today, my teacher proved to me that it is possible to literally be talked to death. I was on the verge of taking a nap when the bell rang, and I didn't get a single thing out of the lesson.

I have had a succession of fantastic math teachers, people that explain all the concepts too you, and really make you know why math works. And yet, with our lesson on arc tangents today I was lost, not because its hard but because she didn't bother to explain a darn thing. Admittedly, that particular subject is really hard to explain, but still a little effort would have helped.

So, how do you learn, and what's your favorite trait about a teacher you have had?

I pretty much just soak up information like a sponge, don't study, and get A's.

As with sponges, though, sometimes I have to go over the same thing a few times to get it all :P

I'm primarily a visual learner, and for things like history, it works great. There are some things (language) that I can't learn this way, though. If I can't absorb something visually, unfortunately I need to drill something in my head through repetition.

If it sticks it sticks. I'm not sure if I really ever learn, just made aware of things. I guess you can call that learning. Dunno, things just happen.

...I use my brain...occasionally...

...And when I don't, I somehow have a subconscious brain that takes in information when playing Pokemon Silver...or criticizing how pathetic the educational system is...

...Also, this:

Depends. In terms of say, vocabulary, be it English of French, I need to write it out 10 Billion times.

Math problems (and physics) I need to do another 10 Billion of to understand.

But give me Social, Bio, or other things of interest, and I'll absorb it. In fact, writing notes based on those things will confuse me, as I'm always in a constant swirl of thought - one that needs to stay in my head.

I'm like a Zorbee; I have to be pressed in order to retain anything.

As long as I'm paying attention, I'll usually just soak it up like a sponge, like Zovi said. :P
Visuals help for classes like History.
My history teacher is so awesome. You couldn't fall asleep in his class.

This, except I don't have to go over something.

If it's interesting; I can learn it pretty quickly; if I can find a use for it, same thing.

Doesn't apply to math or just about anything else related to it, however.

As long as I write down something I'll remember it even if I don't look over it after a while.
Some classes I can just sit through and get A's (Chemistry, English, History), but other like Math I have to pay attention.

I'm capable of learning anything, but stuff like history takes more studying than I have time for, or care to do...
Math is more formulaic so I can get it after it's been crammed into my head a lot; I'm a couple years ahead.

But I still prefer art. I guess it's more gratifying when I realize I can draw better and get a finished product I care about.
