Quote from: GoNintendoTHESE ARE UNOFFICIAL NUMBERS. NINTENDO HAS NOT OFFICIALLY RELEASED ANY DETAILS ON THE WII BESTING THE SNES IN SALES/SHIPMENTS.
If these unofficial numbers are true, Nintendo has just surpassed another self-set milestone. The SNES managed to sell 49.1 million units to retailers worldwide back during the Genesis/SNES wars. From what we understand, Nintendo has sold 50 million Wii units to worldwide. That pretty much locks in the Wii as Nintendo's second best-selling console. I'd love for Nintendo to confirm this.
Now here is some stuff from IBM to back it up, a couple days before...saying that they shiped the 50 millionth Wii Processer

"We are proud to have achieved this important milestone in supplying the microprocessor for Nintendo's Wii system, which has brought millions of new consumers to the gaming experience," said Brian Connors, vice president, games and power platforms for IBM Microelectronics. "IBM has a long, successful relationship with Nintendo combining silicon technology with game system creativity to deliver winning products."
well, think it'll pass the NES of 61.91 million?

...Sure, why not?...
...It's not hard to see that it
can happen...
...But the possibility that it will happen isn't in the air...
...About 50:50 depending on how many Wiis continue to break, how many people still don't have Wiis who want or haven't had enough money before hand to get one an certain other statistics...
...But the way the economy is now, people might be hesitant to get one; though it can still beat the NES' record in due time...
I'm tempted to believe the Wii will start speeding up again soon, so yes. People may not have the cash for luxury items as such, but they're more willing to spend it on things that could give them repeated fun - like a Wii, opposed to a one time beach trip.
I think the Wii could beat the NES.
Even after the next-generation Nintendo console is released, Nintendo will probably keep putting out Wiis. As long as it keep selling, which it probably will.
Wii will own NES sales, because like the NES it pioneers a new age in gaming, motion sensor controls, and gaming that the whole family can enjoy. Even though I am personally against it as a whole it is a great marketing strategy that will make Nintendo billions of dollars by appealing to the casual gamer+ family. I felt so sad at E3 and was quite disappointed, since the main theme was the "appeal to the casual gamer" however I can not blame Reggie, if a formula works, stick to it. It is business in its prime gentlemen, better get used to it from Nintendo.
Nintendo can't continue to be the pioneer, though. It's as simple as that. Their era is now, but they will lose it. Well see a push to the core within a couple of years, believe me.

Your correct, however since Nintendo beat other companies to the punch they will be able to have leagues of a head start in front of them. Look at the wii balance board, before you know it there will be Wii versions of the power glove, and 3d goggles. I realize we are probably far from that technology, at least in a way that it could be affordable for the average person, however Nintendo is pushing that. I believe the next console war will be a battle of "Who's the first to come closest to virtual reality?" The Wii has quite the impressive start.
We're not ready for that, as a global community. The Wii will sell well now because of its worth in entertaining people for fairly cheap. Down the road, it'll move down the road of the hardcore base to keep growth.
That hardcore base will become the base for the next system....which is what will determine it. If this base wants that...perhaps. If not, then we won't see that type of thing for some time.

I am hoping for that, maybe that will teach Nintendo not to dump on its hardcore gamers just because they are loyal enough to take there cheap easy games.
It's not that....it's just an obvious progression. Those casuals will already have Wii, likely an excess of titles, etc. The hardcore will be where continued sales need to come from...

I dunno, keep in mind in an average family of 4 theres probably only 1 hardcore gamer, now add the other 3 as casual and they by far out number us. So we will see what the future holds.

well if it wasn't for the hard core gamers getting the wii, because they are loyal to Nintendo, the casual people wouldn't have heard about it that much.
also, about how easy games are.
when i bought new SMB, it didn't get hard untill world 8 level 4 :|
