Title: Wise Words #1
Post by: Macawmoses on March 22, 2009, 05:57:06 PM
Poor use of diction is no excuse. However, the bulk of NSFCD does not use a diverse mix of words, making this place dull, at best.

My idea? Enhance my own vocabulary and spread it to the rest of you through a series of daily terms, idioms, and quotes. This way our posts can be magical ^___________^

Your responses will be things like "I no this word but not this" and as such. To make things more fun, I'm going to make a contest out of this, so pay close attention.

Daily Terms:

Cajole: To coerce, coax
ie. He tried cajoling his girlfriend into sex.

Automaton: A robot-like thing that can maintain itself....is the best description.
ie. R2-D2 is an automaton.

Laconic: Saying much in few words.
ie. His speech was laconic and powerful.

Idiom of the Day:

The Sword of Damocles: Any imminent danger.
The story can be found here (http://www.geocities.com/Hollywood/2549/damocles.html).

Quote of the Day:

Quote from: Henry Ford
Any colour - so long as it's black.

In reference to the Model T, all painted flat black due to faster drying times and a chance to cut costs.

So, here you are. Try using them, or just call me a nut. Regardless, these should offer some alternatives to words like robot. Try em out, please.

I see you're using this thread to cajole us into expanding our vocabulary, hoping to make our posts more, shall we say, laconic.

By speaking laconically, I cajoled all the humans of the earth to defenestrate an automaton so they would break and couldn't usurp the planet.

usurp- to take over

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo. English, my one WEAKNESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!  :robottongue:

I really don't think that people are going to be using many of this though. No offense at all but we talk pretty casually here. It'll be nice to see some of these words though just so I can say, "Wha? How did you come up with that ???? "

Old news.   And I don't think references to the Bible and obscure words are gonna make users any more interesting.

I didn't know automatons, the Greeks, and automobiles and assembly lines were part of the Bible. Perhaps I should pick it up.

Don't quite think you used "simile" in the right context.

Let me try using it in context.

Silver Pissed Vaatix Off, and was defenestrated for it.

You pointed out bible references. I see none in my post. With that, instruct me to shut up again and I assure you, NSF will be down one member. :)

I didn't point anything specific out; that was an inference of yours.  My Bible reference comment was just a generalizations of the allusions made to famous works.  I thought that would be pretty obvious...  If anything the main purpose of the comment was just to tell you that your didactic attempt at trying to make this place lively was useless (made obvious by its being on the bottom already).  Also, shut up.  Knock yourself out.
