Square-Enix sent a cease and desist letter to the creators of a fan sequel to Chrono Trigger, an extensive RPG that was 98% complete.

I just find it funny Square-Enix does this to a fangame created from scratch, but Nintendo does nothing about MOTHER 3 being translated by hacking code.
Aw, poor Square-Enix. Too mad that your port of a 13 year old game at the price of a new one has gotten pirated so much? I can't imagine why.... ::)
And yet the game will be online once it's done anyway, so there isn't much Square can actually do XD

The team that created it is deleting all of their work, otherwise they would get a $150,000 fine.

Someone's backing it up, I gurantee it. X_X;;
I would never let that much work to go waste...

How does Square know that they are deleting it all or any for that matter?
Kind of reminds me of Chrono Resurrection...

If they see it on the Internet, they fine the guy who made it.
I was going to post this, too. >:(
Kind of a mean move by Square Enix. If you're going to stop someone from making a fangame of a franchise you own, at least do it sooner. Don't make them stop right when they're almost done. :\
I miss Squaresoft ;-;
Nostalgia bomb? I think this one just killed me DX

They didn't make just FF, they've made many other great games.
Although Square-Enix did make TWEWY
That was a pretty dick move.
they should just change the names and sprites of anything that looks or sounds similar and release it >:o

Criminal charges can be pressed.
Shit, there was a fan-made sequel?
AND THEY CANCELLED IT?!
brb angry letter to Enix
Lately, Square-Enix has been like that ever since Star Ocean: The Last Hope came out. All the videos in Youtube that featured the endings for all the characters were deleted by the company.
And so did the videos for FF XIII as well.
Am I the only one not upset? They own the rights to it. Quite simple. There is no business of people making these games, as it only serves to deter the creator from making a true sequel/translation etc. I'd be mad if my actual game was only being played over the internet.

maybe if Square actually made a sequel there wouldn't be a need for this (like the Mother 3 deal)
Also, unless the guys are actually making money then they really shouldn't complain, since it's no harm no foul. If anything it could only help game sales. Again, if they're so upset, make one yourself.

I know right?
Laws are for losers.
Wow, that's kind of a dick move. =/
gj Sqenix.
I'll be expecting a "Oops my computer was accidentally hacked and the files were stolen and uploaded somehow; you can't blame me for that".

copyright laws when no attempt to make money are for losers.
Seriously, companies are such idiots when it comes to poop like this. If they're not making money it can only help them. As long as it's not the actual game itself, then there isn't a problem. Again, it can only help the company be bringing awareness to the series.
But no, if it were up to these corporations, guys like Disney would charge a five dollar fine every time someone said "Mickey Mouse" in casual conversation.
Yeah, we're lucky they didn't get their way when VHS/Laserdiscs came out, they wanted the machines to have a special tax on them and impose strict laws about recording and playing back recorded TV.
Oh, and if a company doesn't give an alternative to waiting around for something to appear on TV, it's going to be pirated. This is guaranteed. This is why most major networks allow you to watch full episodes online, to cut the amount of videos they pull that are illegally uploaded.
They obviously don't listen too well to my email:

What kind of loser cancels a fangame? Well, anyone who feels the need to down nearly completed fanwork deserves my disrespect (and that goes to Nintendo too!)

Nintendo doesn't cancel fangames because people don't sell them for profit. This one wasn't being sold either. It depends on the company, they can enforce user generated content based on their IPs any way they want.
so now they're like the Prince of the video game industry?
disappointing.

Nintendo did shut down Syntax Error right about the time they were releasing their work to the public.

That's a ninny move for Square to do.

Not the 98% complete version, more of an alpha.
Dumbasses are going to get sued.
And I defiantly wouldn't know about this being a pretty fun game or anything ::)

I think it's barely playable at the stage it is now, at least from what I've heard....
Honestly, Square-Enix has probably forgotten about it by now.
Wow... that sucks... I'd be mad as intercourse if that happened to me... But I can't and wouldn't ever make a fangame so... yeah. Haha, if I owned a company (doubt I will, but you never know), I'd do this last minute too.

Yeah it really isn't 98% complete but it does have quite a bit of fun factor in it.
Well, I believe I should have pirated the new Chrono Trigger then, instead of spending $40 on it :|
why wouldn't they shut it down? They have full rights to and you people are acting like they did some horrible thing.

No kidding. Square has every last right to shut this poop down.
Fanfags get too worked up over crap like this.
Everyone is more mad off that it was almost done. I would've canceled it last minute too, teach them not to even start.
