Title: Community Service Woes
Post by: HTA! on May 27, 2009, 04:20:08 PM
So, for my school we need to have 30 hours of community service per year to stay enrolled. This year I will either end up with 29.5 or 30.5.

The former is a problem, since if I don't get all my hours I go on academic probation.

In itself that's not a big deal, but my mom is freaking out and telling me its my fault. Really, its a teacher's fault for giving me less hours than she said she would for a project. D:

So, who's fault is it?
What kinds of community service standards do you have at your school?

I need 10 documented to graduate.

I only have 3 documented, but I probably have more due to band.

Do you go to private school?

No offense but I think it's ridiculous to be required to do community service hours to graduate or stay enrolled if it isn't a private school...

Are you in some sort of club? (National Honors Society, etc.)
We don't have any community service required.

No.
90 hours for graduation and diploma, 30 per year.
Senior year you don't have to.

I have to have at least 20 hours documented throughout high school, with at least 10 of those coming in my junior/senior year.

I'm in the National Honor Society so we have to have something like 80...I'm pretty much fine for that because they count the mandatory "tutoring" (i.e. sitting in tutoring center for a period every cycle doing nothing because nobody comes for tutoring), and I've been helping an elderly lady learn Vista every week which adds up.

During sophomore year every student is required to obtain 15 hours of community service in their civics class. If they get even a minute, or even a second less, then they automatically fail the course. You are given sheets to record your hours and get it signed by whoever you helped.

None for school. Though this one scholarship I'm going for requires 100 in one year.

I needed 20 to graduate......luckily my kickass basketball coach had summer camps and he gave every member of the team 50 hours if they helped at them.

My school requires us to have 75 community service hours done by the end of the third quarter of our junior year, or we will automatically fail our religion class.

Being in National Honors Society adds 30 more hours annually to my plate to stay in the club.

Being in Spanish Honors Society added 10 more this year (probably 30 next year) to stay in the club.
