Title: Batman: Arkham Asylum
Post by: Tupin on May 31, 2009, 10:29:40 PM
So, since the Dark Knight game never came to fruition, we get to have a non-movie based Batman game, Arkham Asylum. It's a mixture of stealth, fighting, and adventure.

It's due out in August, here's a video of it:

I played a demo of it today for a very short time, but I was impressed with it. The camera seemed a little off, but everything else about it was pretty good.

I saw the trailer a few months ago.
But seeing the game in action, it still looks cool.
Hopefully it will come out for Wii. :\

Nope, just PC, 360, and PS3.

It looks decent. But then again it is a licensed property game, so the fact that it's decent is a good sign in it of itself X_X;;

Batman usually has really good games, mainly because it's so hard to mess it up. I did find it odd that this is pretty much the first Batman game in a long time not based on a movie.

The Wii never gets stuff like this because it doesn't have enough power to do so.

My roommate is uber-psyched for this game, and I think it looks good. If you ever watched the animated series when you were kids (most of you might be a little young, I dunno), all of the original voice actors have come back for this game. Mark Hamill did a great job with the Joker. And the PS3 gets a semi-exclusive by the Joker only being playable on that system.

:O

:) Awesome. I didn't know that they had the original voice actors coming back. Now I am very excited for this game.

Yeah, I thought I heard someone familiar voicing the Joker, I just wasn't sure.

Hm, I'll have to see about getting the PS3 version, but at this point, I'm probably getting the 360 one.

The game basically takes the best of the comics, animated series, and recent movies all rolled into one.  For those new to the game, the basic plot is as follows:  Batman has recently beaten Joker and is now escorting the police officers that are taking him to his cell in Arkham Asylum.  On the way, however, Joker breaks free, and reveals that he is now in charge.  The entire game then takes place on the island where this huge, fully explorable insane asylum is located as Batman attempts to restore order, take down the Joker and other villains, and ultimately escape Arkham.  Also, it appears as though the criminals of Black Gate, Gotham's main prison, have been temporarily moved to the asylum for some reason (probably due to Joker), so you'll get to see and fight Batman's non-insane enemies too (possibly including Catwoman, Penguin, Two Face, etc.).

Confirmed villains are currently Joker, Harley Quinn, Bane, and Killer Croc.

In addition to normally exploring the island, there are two types of challenge rooms that Batman will often find himself in.  The first is Freeflow, which is an amazingly fluid and simple-yet-awesome brawl between Batman and Joker's thugs; this mode is currently available as a PS3 demo at Walmart (at least in my town), and I assure you, it's even better than it looks in the previews.  The second challenge room is what Batman's all about:  Invisible Predator, where you must use your gadgets, agility, fighting skills, and most importantly, fear, in order to take down a whole room of baddies without getting caught.

Buy it.  August 25.

Like I said, I played the demo for probably less than five minutes at Gamestop and it went from a game I had barely heard of to one of my most anticipated games of the year in that short period. After I looked up trailers and stuff online, I was sure that this would pretty much be a day one purchase.

All original voice actors are back for this game.

Kevin Conroy, a.k.a. the voice of Batman for over 15 years (from Batman: The Animated Series until "The Batman") is back. Thank god.
Mark Hamill is reprising the best voice of the Joker ever, the force is strong with his VA talents (FYI, he's Luke Skywalker for all those not in the know).
I don't know who is voicing Quinn, although from what I can tell it's her original VA. Although, out of all the Batman characters, she's probably had the most VA's. I have to say though, I missed Harley, she's such a fun character.

I don't know, but here's the design of Harley in game and another trailer showing the Joker's PS3 exclusive gameplay:

Oh, and Poison Ivy will make an appearance:

Joker gameplay looks FUN...

Apparently the entire cast is Batman: Animated series VA's. I would recognize that Poison Ivy voice anywhere (and it's way better than Uma Thurmond).

I just hope this game has a decent length; I'm expecting Final Fantasy XII or anything in terms of hours, but more than 10 or 20. This title was really the only thing that excited me during E3 (since I hadn't heard of it before then), so I'm looking forward to getting it as a special birthday present to myself. (Incidentally, my name was a reference to the actor of Batman in the late 80's, early 90's Batman movies; my father was a fan)

Kingdom Hearts, 2 new Marios, best Metroid ever, at least 3 Final Fantasies, MAG, 2 Halos, Ratchet & Clank, 2 Zeldas, Golden Sun, at least 2 Metal Gears, Assassin's Creed, Wii Motion Plus, Glow Wand, Natal, Milo, etc etc etc...

I cry for your soul if this was the only game you were excited for.

Like I said in the Adult Link thread, games are overhyped enough as it is and so little details will fail to excite me. Kingdom Hearts, Final Fantasy, etc. I already knew about, so I'm just waiting for them to come out already.  Finally, I'm more wary than excited about motion sensing after the Wii and EyeToy.

It's not that it looks fun, it's that it looks gritty. That's missing from a lot of games these days, especially those that claim to be.

Oh, and there's also a collectors edition, but it's $100.

Comes with all this:
Quote from: Gamestop
    * 14" Batarang with stand
          o Matches the Batarang's in-game design
    * Arkham Doctor's Journal
          o 48 pages of notes on Arkham's inmates
          o Embossed leather dust jacket
    * 2 Sleeve Digi-pack, including:
          o Game disc
          o Behind-the-scenes DVD
    * Code for downloadable Challenge Map
    * Exclusive "Crime Alley" map, available immediately
    * Full-color Manual

I think I'll stick with the regular edition. Don't know how the last thing is special, both edition have full color manuals.

Ditto.  I'd spend an extra 40 for a bataraang alone, let alone all that other stuff.
