4 players....................
That was a let down in my mind, i was hoping for a a core 2d mario game.
it also looks like they to nsmb ds and just remade it for wii
thoughts?
see impressions thread, but yea, VERY LACKLUSTER.
Apparently Nintendo forgot they already did that for Zelda for the Gamecube, not to mention you can download co-op Mario games for free online.
Besides, two Toads instead of Wario and Waluigi? C'MON!

No online cooperative play for NSMBWii... why? Because according to Miyamoto, it pushes the maximum processing power for the Wii.
Now, I rarely ever call Miyamoto when he actually says something. However, I have to call BULLSHIT on this one. A DS game pushes the Wii's processors to the max? Wow, this is why no one wants to develop anything for your system Nintendo X_X;;
Also, why not have online? You want us to connect with players right? Well, that's a way to do so!
*continues rambling for a long period of time*
Wow, MAJOR disappointment if I have to say so myself. Nintendo... GET YOUR LAZY ASS ONLINE
That processing power thing seemed like a cop-out.
Oh well. What little interest I had is dead now.
Online would be a cool feature, not a must have.
You people act like the game 100% fails now, just because there's no online.
It's a nice perk, not something the game needs to have.
But Miyamoto using processing power as an excuse is just stupid, the Wii can do more than that. Much more.

In this day and age of gaming, if the main draw of the game is the multiplayer, then it really has to be online. There is no excuse right now.
Sure, having a 4 player game back on the N64 was nice, because there was no internet gaming.
But really, it's a platformer. Not a RTS, or an RPG, or anything else. It's Run, Jump, and shake Wii mote. I know it doesn't "need" it, but it's yet another opportunity Nintendo should take advantage of instead of fearing online for no good reason.
I called a rant on this, so I'll just be collecting my money now.
The game will still be good. You just can't play online. Although, the excuse is stupid...
Wow that just sucks. The Wii is good but it also a problem when it comes to online.
WII NEEDS UPGRADE!!!

Especially since they're YELLOW and BLUE toads (a.k.a. why not use Wario and Waluigi!?)
Wario and Waluigi didn't have anything to do with NSMB. And I doubt they will in this game.
Having them in it would be stupid.

Better than two color coded Toads who serve no other purpose than being obligatory 3rd and 4th players.
Besides, Wario was in Mario DS where he had no business in being...
And we can't have Yoshi since I think I've seen a screen of everyone riding Yoshis. And c'mon, this would've been a good chance to finally put Waluigi in an actual Mario game X_X:;

Wario was only in NSMB for a mini-game, which all came from SM64. ;)
But to me, the Toads are fine. Besides, why would Wario and Waluigi be helping to beat Bowser? D:

Yes but then he found out the Cake was a lie. He doesn't want to help anymore. :P
And it looks pretty fun. I always like it when Toad is playable. I always play as him. Blue and Yellow? Who cares. Better than getting villians to be good guys. AGAIN

One Toad I'd be okay with, but two Toads is just plain lazy and uncreative. At least they could've done Wario for the Yellow Toad.
And technically Wario has only been a villain once, in Mario Land 2.

And in every crappy sports game spin-off. Plus they make his character Greedy. Greedy = Bad in gaming.
But yes 2 Toads is pretty bad. I give my vote to Birdo as the 4th character.

I have to agree here. A blue Toad is fine with me, as blue is a favorite color of mine. Wario would have been a better choice.
I can sorta see why online wasn't able to get in. Still wish they could have some sort of online, be it a battle mode or some edited stages.
Maybe once you beat the game, you'll get to play as peach. ::)
Um, if one of the two toads is replaced with Peach, you have SMB2 US's character lineup.
Funny, I can see people a couple months ago complaining that 2D Mario is dead on consoles, from NES and SNES days where that was the life of 2D Mario games. Then when such a game is announced, they complain that it should have been on the DS.
I think that the graphical style of this game as well as its music could have been changed much more (I hate most of NSMB's soundtrack x.x), but otherwise it seems satisfying.

I don't mind the 2D, it's just the graphics weren't changed or polished at all. The least they could've done is redo the models for Mario and Luigi so they would at least look a little more high res X_X;;
Jeez...Nayr...you always say/think the same way I do.
To defend Wario and Waluigi in such a game Such as this.
IF they were available to play with Mario and Luigi, wouldn't that make the story line more interesting?!
"Oh! Whats this?! Wario and Walugi working with Mario And Luigi?? How can this be?! What happened to make these rivals team up for some reason?! I must find out why by buying this game and checking it out".
An argument about having Waluigi in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
For 1 example and for 1 reason.
RIVALRY.
Come on! Don't think inside the box Doodleboy, think outside.
Can you imagine the possibilities?
Mario and Wario vs. Luigi and Waluigi (taking turns progressing through the stages that is) I mean, this just adds and mixes things up. Plus its just different from the lame thing over and over again.
AND if this game was online, you have a bigger rivalry, as in who could beat the stage faster under co op mode... Choose the people you want to be, "Mario, Luigi, Wario, Waluigi" (heck, maybe add in a Toad or Peach, Daisy herself).
It baffles me greatly to see them drop the ball on something very obvious to what they can do to push this game further.
It seems like this game lacks so much potential of what it truly could be.
-Another note-
*sighs*
I ...... HATE ....to my Heart, Super Mario Bros. 1.
The game sucks on so many levels (no pun), I hate it, hate it, HATE IT!
Super mario bros. 2 and super mario bros. 3 were FAR and BEYOND superior to that game I hate so much. *shudders*.
Even though I own a D.S. (which is probably oven baked in my glove compartment of my car ) I never played SMB for the Wii, for fear of it being just like SMB 1. I hope this new SMB Wii game plays differently.......and even if it did, it'll be multi player anyway so it won't be all That bad. I hope not atleast.
-Last note-
As stated by people on this post about the Wii not being able to handle the New SMB Wii Online excuse.
SSBB AND MK Wii are 2 very complex games that...... HAVE ONLINE. Oh and I'm so sure that these 2 games are a lot more conflicting then a 2D SIDE SCROLLER!!!
(http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f28/Lady_Mokuren/Icons/th_bdf951c4.gif) LIKE, THOUGH SUPA SMASH BRATHAS BRAWL ANDZ MARIO CART WEE HAZ ONLINE AND TEN THOUZAND THINGZ GOEN ON AT ONCE, WE KANT MAKE THE WEE GO ONLINE ON A SIMPLEZ SIDE SCROLLERZ GAME!!
You doubt the Wii's capability?
And EVEN IF IT COULD NOT, don't you think you should of MADE IT TO WHERE IT WOULD BE ABLE TO GO ONLINE JUST AS EASILY AS A PLAYSTATION OR AN X BOX.
*face palms*
I'm not Lucky enough to have people come over and play vid games with me just any time of the day, half the time cause I'm working or I'm just too tired. A great game like this would be perfect (for people like me) to play and have fun with people online. There is no excuse. NO not all games needs to be online, but IT SHOULD be an Option.......what could be wrong with that?
You don't like a game going online, FINE don't play the online feature......but if a game Could and would be a lot more "Funner" (I know thats not even a word) then let it be.
Like Smash...... though it's online is past horrid, it's able to connect people from great distances...... Why can't a simplistic game like this go online?
*shakes head*
I'll continue to look at this game, but I certainly hope it gets better.
Hmm! I wonder how that Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle Game is coming along...........
>_>
Nary, you got my back?
SMB, sucking? D:
I have no problem with Wario and Waluigi being playable in NSMB Wii. But it doesn't seem like it would fit in.
And Nay, there were no models in NSMB. It was "fake" 2.5D, everything was made of sprites.
You hate the game because you suck ass at it. Pretty simple, really.
SMB still to this day is a blast to play. I can't think of any other game that's 20 years old and still fun.

NSMB had all 3D Models, in a 2D perspective. The only 2D things were background and parts of stages. All character and enemy models were fully rendered.

It looks to me as if the models have been improved from the DS' for the Wii. I don't have the DS game to compare, though.
also, this seems to be World-y than SMB, what with the Yoshis, the Kooplings and the "other" power-ups. (though, that last one is SMB3-y)
I'm not sure what the deal is with the online feature. Won't be happening, it seems.

Hard to complain about a game that was literally the first of it's kind. Just like it's hard to complain about Space Invaders being shallow. It was the first of those kinds of games, so a lot of the faults can be traced to trail and error.

Seriously though, I can't believe there's people who hate this new 2D Mario game because it lacks great graphics and online.
1. We aren't losing something by not having online, we're gaining something by having 4-player 2D Mario on the Wii in the first place. Yeah, they could have tried online, and maybe they should have tried online, but none of this online whining would be going on if it never had multiplayer, and it's pretty sad that you guys will literally complain about the fact that we get something new as if we were lost something old. That was the point of someone here mentioning Galaxy earlier; no one complained about it not having multiplayer, but you would have complained about online if there was multiplayer.
2. Come on guys, I think it's about time we got real here; are you honestly going to complain about GRAPHICS and ONLINE on a WII GAME?!? Gameplay looks good, we get new multiplayer, graphics are still okay, and you don't have to buy it if you don't want to.

1. Complaining about graphics because it looks like a DS game... a HANDHELD graphics on a CONSOLE system. That's why it's slightly annoying. And most people I know don't really complain about Wii graphics unless they really bite the big one.
2. Why can't we complain about a lack of online? For a company that has been claiming the "we're bringing people together in gaming" not having online is sort of a paradox to that statement. Multiplayer is a great idea, but what if I want to play my friends who are in a different town? Why can't I go online and meet new people and make new friends? It's a horribly missed opportunity, especially for a game that frankly it would not be difficult at all to implement online (face it Miyamoto your processing power excuse is total BS and you know it).
No one complained about lack of online for Galaxy was because there was no multiplayer. Just like no one complained about lack of online for Metroid Prime 3 or Twilight Princess. HOWEVER, when you blatantly go out of the way to make a game multiplayer heavy and a primary focus of the game, not having even the most basic online mode is inexcusable, even if it is the Wii.
I've been waiting forever for a sequel to New Super Mario Bros. It was really good, I felt, but it ended too fast.
Honestly, I'm pretty excited about this game. Not at the very top of my must-have list but it's a for-sure buy for me.
Honestly, people, not every game has to have online play to be fun.
If you can't find people to play local multiplayer then you need to go out more.
It's a intercourse ing classic-style Mario game. A game that hearkens back to its roots. I don't see why you are whining so much.
I'll give 200 bucks to anyone who finds a post where Nayr isn't complaining about something
And who needs online? All you guys would do is complain about how much it sucks.
And again with the Toad complaints, this is Nintendo, master of kiddy gameplay and master of hiding something special like an unlockable in most games. I thought of that because the Toads are Yellow and Blue, I mean c'mon, at least have the decency to use the regular Toad...
I'll give 300 bucks bucks to anyone who finds a post where JrDude isn't either making fun of people or slyly trying to prove how much better he is than everyone.
Also, I dare you to find a post where I say the game sucks, I'm saying Nintendo is missing out on a huge opportunity, and frankly the multiplayer is slightly worse with no online. Look at the 360 and PS3. Every multiplayer extensive game is online, and frankly the online modes do help the game's lasting appeal.
Easy to find =3
And multiplayer looks fun on this game, I am disappointed that there's no online, but whatever has online in Nintendo is just complained about.
Well, at E3 they said players would die if they ended up getting out of the screen.
So, say the game is online. What if you're playing against a player much better than you? All you'd do is be falling of the screen the whole match.

Hey, get that reasoning off my forums! You wanna get flamed?!
First of all, if I watched correctly, the screen slowly scrolls to the side, and it seems you can't make it go faster, so that part wouldn't be a problem. But lag, that would definitely be a problem, it's almost as bad as the "going too fast" remark.
Exactly. I'd rather just have a leaderboard for a time trials mode or something.

_______
Oh, and about the other subject at hand about this game being online.
Let it be an Option... Please both those who want to keep the game simple and those who want to play with there friends over great distances online.
And don't give the excuse of "lag" for example.
Mario Kart Wii (which I'm sure is Far more complicated then THIS Game New Super Mario Bros.) can easily hold/handle online features.
Surly, a simple side scrolling stage with enemies and moving platforms should not produce So much lag to where people just can't function and perform.
That in itself (IMO) is just about as a worst excuse as Wii's online capability for this GAME in the 1st place.
For what ever reason a person may say "oh, this game doesn't need this or that etc etc..." there is always somebody else who will say, " well actually if it did have this or that etc etc etc...".
The game IMO would be more Open if it had more options for people to enjoy it. It being online brings people closer together because sometimes they are too far apart.

It would be fun competing with others for times on the levels.
At least I think it would be. D:
Having or not having online shouldn't be that big of a deal, though. It's a Mario game that goes back to its roots. It doesn't need loads of extra features.
I'd rather have them work hard on the main part of the game and not have them worry about online features.
Eh, there's nothing special about the Wii's online capabilities anyway. Though it is a poor excuse, how great do you really think the multiplayer would be if it did have online? That's left up to your personal opinion and imagination, but I could care less if it has multiplayer or not. I rarely play online. If the actual game itself is good, I'll be a happy gamer. If it's too easy and straightforward as one might expect, online gameplay would be meaningless. There's no point in playing a game with others if it's not that great a game to begin with.

Well because it's actually Myself feeling this way, it's just the way it is, and that won't change. Not everybody will like a game, even it it's the 1st of it's kind. I hate Sonic 1 for similar reasons but Love the rest of the Sonic series (Sonic 2 and 3 for perfect examples. If you think it's stupid thats fine, cause in the end it won't change a thing.
Let's forget about this, cause I was done talking about it over 2 days ago.

I ...... HATE ....to my Heart, Super Mario Bros. 1.
The game sucks on so many levels (no pun), I hate it, hate it, HATE IT!
Super mario bros. 2 and super mario bros. 3 were FAR and BEYOND superior to that game I hate so much. *shudders*.
I never played SMB for the Wii, for fear of it being just like SMB 1.
I'm not really fond of the first SMB game myself... but hating it is a bit extreme.
There has never been an "SMB for the Wii" before, outside of Virtual Console. If you mean New Super Mario Bros 1, that is for DS, not Wii. And it is not at all like SMB 1. Imagine how SMB3 and Super Mario World are different from SMB1, and the same generally applies to New SMB. Different stages, different graphics, different powerups, different difficulty, etc.

Well thank you for clearing that up.
To be honest, I hate the first one really because gameplay wise and a few power up's it just sucks compared to other similar Mario games (so be it SMB 3). But this is just me and my own opinion.
If the New Mario Bros. game plays Not like SMB 1, I should be happy enough. Thats all I ask for, lol.

I still don't like the idea of being two generic Toads though. Do you think Nintendo should go and give them names or just leave them as is?

At first, I didn't know what the author of this article meant...but as I read towards the end........ the more and more I understood And agreed with him.
If these Toads have names, and a decent background of some sort, then I personally can relate and appreciate them more.
And the game would be that much more enjoyable.
I don't know if Mario and Luigi will have different powers or abilities though, cause if not....if every character fights the same and jumps the same etc etc... then you might as well play 4 Mario's at the same time, meh.

They'll all have the same abilities obviously. But yea, they need some kind of story for those two or else they'll be terribly bland in my opinion. Although since Luigi was unlockable in NSMB for hte DS, I think someone like Wario/Waluigi will be an unlockable.

Obviously if there are no unlockables, then zero.
But if the is unlockables, then I'd put them at the highest percentage at being unlocked. Unless of course the unlockable is that 1p can play as Luigi when he's by himself... which would be retarded and a cop out.
I honestly only think there will be only 1 unlockable while Toad will be the 4th choice, but that's just me.

probably, since Nintendo has never done much of anything in terms of unlockables for Mario games...
I just hope it is something worthwhile instead of a pallet swap X_X;;
Think about it, Mario Bros had only Mario & Luigi, same with NSMB (DS), now we have Mario Bros 2 which had Mario, Luigi, Toad, and Peach. NSMB Wii is basically #2, and we already kinda have Mario, Luigi, and Toad, now who will the unlockable be? (if there is one)

I seriously doubt it would be Peach, although I would not be surprised. It can't be Yoshi, since he's ride-able (although I would like the irony of seeing a Yoshi riding a Yoshi).
My bets from most likely to least likey:
Wario
Peach
Waluigi (only if Wario is unlockable)
Toadsworth

A little late to the punch there.
That's what I get when I don't read the entire thread...
I always thought all male Toads were named Toad and all female ones were named Toadette. With the exception of Toadsworth, of course.
Nope. The female ones are just female toads, the Pink female toad with pigtails is the only Toadette.

Isn't Toadette the only established female Toad though? Although she suffers from Waluigi syndrome though so I don't think it's much a continuity issue...
Actually I wouldn't mind Toadette being the 4th character. It would've made more sense X_X;;

The only one I really played in depth was the first one, before Toadette even existed. Although I don't doubt you.
I really wish some of the RPG characters would make appearances in the main series, but whatever.
Now that I think about it Toadette does make a sensible choice as an unlockable, although I doubt it since as you said she's essentially filler. X_X;;

Another one: Minh T. [SP?] (The flower loving toad)
They both had minor-major roles in the story.
