Title: Grade the Big Three
Post by: PsychoYoshi on June 02, 2009, 02:03:36 PM
To avoid multiple threads like this, I'm going to attempt to consolidate them into this big thread. Please provide a letter grade for Sony, MS, and Nintendo. Preferably explain your rating to lessen the effects and accusations of fanboyism.

Sony gets major ballsy points, and they also have a good batch of games that bridge the way into 2010: Brutal Legend, Assassin's Creed, Infamous, you get the idea. Solid upcoming games as well. PS3mote looks very, very promising, and the fact that the engineers mentioned "envision a mage throwing fireballs" and the enemy tech demo with shuriken, sword, arrows, makes me very hopeful. Seems they want to use it to create games that might actually have more than novelty value. The only thing that I think is going to flop is the PSP Go. A-.

Microsoft has a solid batch of sequels and a slightly dumbed-down version of FFXIII. However, not many new exclusives that interest me. It looks like Microsoft is playing it safe and doing what they know best. There's nothing wrong with it, but the lack of anything specifically for the 360 that interests me at this point pushes me more towards the PS3. B.

Nintendo continues to disappoint, and unless they majorly change their ways for Wii 2, I don't envision buying myself another console from them. Red Steel 2 might be cool with WMP if it isn't buggy. Crystal Bearers looks to be a solid RPG. Metroid: Other M looks to be good (and hey, Samus was some nerdy scientist in her early days. Who'd think?), but it's not out until 2010. SMG2 will be good, but it's more of the same (only with Yoshi this time). The "hardcore" third party games that Nintendo mentioned are all horror FPSs (Conduit, Dead Space) that I don't give a poop about. New Super Mario Bros. looks somewhat solid, but will probably be like the original NSMB: you'll play through it once and have a blast, and then never come back to it again. Multiplayer looks gimmicky.

Wii Vitality is a gimmicky crock of poop. It has potential (like I was telling to Silver earlier, imagine a game like Eternal Darkness where Vitality measures your heart rate, and as you get more and more nervous, sanity effects start creeping up more and more), but Nintendo is going to use it for shovelware and casualware.

The major redeeming point of the conference is GOLDEN SUN DS AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!, but it appears to be pretty early in the development stage, and Camelot is a big proponent of the Miyamoto Doctrine. It probably won't be out until Summer or Fall 2010. Mario and Luigi 3 should also be fun. C-.

Quick grades:

Microsoft: B+, Extra points for making an underrated game like Crackdown be a big part, although that was their only risk here.

Nintendo: D+, COULD have been a C, but Vitality Sensor? Fuck you.

Sony: A. From the first hour, I was ready to give it an F. No exciting games, no new unveilings, just a PSP Go (which we found out of last week) and showing off mediocre games. I was about to turn off the stream (no, I really was) and I noticed they looked to be unveiling something good: The PS3mote, which is what the Wiimote WAS supposed to be, but Sony was trying to do it correctly. It looked amazing, since it seemed they were trying to use it as something other than a gimmick. Also, ModRacers, which is LBP and Mario Kart's lovechild.

Sony: A
PSP Go should've been $200 at the max, if it wants to compete with the DSi.
-----------------------
Nintendo: C-
Wii Fit Plus.....yay >_>
At least they didn't make a Wii balance board plus....

NSMB Wii, should've shown/talked more about it....not just throw people on and let'em play it...

M & L Bowsers inside story: RELEASE DATE PLEASE it's been 4 months sence it came out in japan...

Also, Wii Sports Resort, I'm glad they show'd more games for it, because before today....we really didn't know anything about it :O :) :-X

and this vitality sensor.....what is Nintendo turning into a stay healthy with video games company? >_>

Get cammie off stage....I'll take Reggie anyday

and where was/is miyamoto to talk about the games that he designed? [SMG2]
-----------------------------------------
Microsoft: ???

Didn't watch it.
I've only seen the hands free thing

Microsoft - Solid B-
No real exclusives outside of Halo (a.k.a. the most overrated series ever), but it still looks like a decent to good game. Other than that not any real news. Everything else they have is also going to be in the PS3. Still good games, but no reason to buy a 360 over a PS3 other than price point (and frankly the extra features like free internet and better multimedia can outweigh the price). Solid, but nothing spectacular.

Nintendo - D
Other than maybe two or three games, extremely little to care about. Galaxy 2 and NSMBWii look fun like always, but pretty much the same thing we already played. I don't particularly mind, but for a company that loves to play the "innovate" card, they certainly aren't doing a lot of it. Metroid Other M looks fantastic, can't wait to see the game in motion. Golden Sun is a major godsend, but other than announcement no information was given. Wii Vitality... yea... we know it's going to be a terrible piece of s***, moving on. All the supposedly "core" games we already knew about, and many of those are barely worth looking at. Why should I buy the rail shooter RE or Dead Space when a much BETTER game in those series is on the 360/PS3? Conduit looks fun as always though. Mario and Luigi 3 in the fall, but nothing on the DS. And no Reggie/Cammie. No one f***ing cares about a stupid virtual novel, a fashion flash game *NOT a good way to endear to 20 somethings men*, or a blatant GTA clone. Other than a couple of games, nothing to look forward to, and failed to impress... again.

Sony - A
Great press conference. Said and showed exactly what we needed to hear. While the PSP Go! will probably do nothing important, it seems like a decent evolution of the PSP, and probably a test of the PSP2 on whether it'll be harddrive only and downloading games. A solid idea and it'll be worth looking at. PS2 still having games after 10 years? That's impressive if I have to say so. A LONG list of good games coming out in a steady stream well into 2010. Great to hear. Not to mention actually having exclusives which is why I bought a PS3. Team Ico, God of War 3, Final Fantasies, and lots of other good quality games. Not to mention a really cool looking motion control that they showed to actually work and will work in the games gamers actually care about. While Nintendo did absolutely nothing with their piece of plastic. Very, very good.

So you hate Microsoft's for not liking them (since I can't see you not at least THINK OF TRYING one), and you don't like Sony's for not liking them.

I thought Nintendo killed off their fanboys when they switched to casual.

It's not exactly fanboyism, just preference.  Every review here is based on whether or not the reviewer personally liked the companies and games they showed; it's no more fanboyish to say "Nintendo was better because I love Mario" than it is to say "Nintendo sucked because I don't like Mario," which sounds similar to what most people here are saying.  Although, as stated at the beginning of the thread, perhaps a bit more explanation in a person's review would prevent this kind of accusation.  Anyway:

Microsoft = B = Lots of good looking games were displayed, but not too much new stuff was presented, which is what I really want out of these kinds of events.  Still, lots of good games is never a bad thing, NEW HALO, and Natal looks sweet, even if it is just a glorified EyeToy.
--Mind Blowing Moment = Milo the AI.  That is the sickest thing I have ever seen, and it looks like Xbox 720 will be the first console to have successful virtual reality.
--WTH?! Moment = Still Milo.  I think it might actually cause legitimate robot-overlord fears in some people.
Nintendo = A- = Nintendo's last E3 probably killed off the last spec of true fanboyism in the heart of everyone who once owned a Nintendo 64, and that comparison alone made my heart jump for joy at this conference.  While most people here are whining about the Wii Motion Plus for some unknown reason, I for one am gladly welcoming 1:1 motion on to the Wii, and I thought Wii Sports Resort was a great demonstration of it, even if it is "gimmicky."  This E3 was also a HUGE relief for hardcore gamers, or at least loyal fans like me, featuring already known games like Conduit and Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days, and newer games like Super Mario Galaxy 2, New Super Mario Bros. Wii (4 players=very nice), Sin & Punishment 2, Golden Sun DS, Red Steel 2 (at least I think it's new), Zelda Wii, and of course Metroid:  Other M.  This E3 gave me new hope in Nintendo; it proved that Nintendo hasn't forgotten the real gamers, and gave me a reason to keep my Wii for a good while longer.  And that is why I think it won; barely, and of course in my opinion, but it won.
--Mind Blowing Moment = Metroid:  Other M.  This was the closest I've ever gotten to fainting of sheer awesomeness in a trailer (other than Snake being in Brawl, of course).  I mean, great looking cutscenes, a real story with dialogue and Samus as a real character, third AND first person gameplay, and of course the up close and awesome looking combat scenes?  HECK YES!!  Oh, and speaking of my pulse rate...
--WTH?! Moment = Vitality Sensor.  There are no words.  There are no words.
Sony = B+ = Sony's show was so good this year, I actually bothered to watch it!  (not as an insult towards Sony, but just due to the fact that I don't have a PS3 or PSP and therefore don't follow the news of them unless it relates to Kingdom Hearts)  Anyway, Sony had a great show this year, or at least what I saw of it, as I didn't watch the entire conference.  There were a ton of great games shown, though I think most were multi-console, with some of my favorites including Mod Racer, the revelation of Final Fantasy XIV Online, and the next Ratchet and Clank.  As for those Glow Wands... they're nice.  Seriously, why is everyone giving them so much praise?  True, the demo looked great, Sony will probably make great use of them in their games, and you can look as nerdily cool as possible by using a real wand with a glowy orb on top to control your virtual wand with a glowy orb on top in fantasy games.  But come on people, IT'S JUST A WII MOTION PLUS RIP OFF, and Natal's controlling without a controller is better than either one of those magic sticks, even with Natal itself simply being an improved EyeToy!  Although, don't confuse this attempt at a reality check with being a killjoy; the wands, and in fact Sony's show in general, were great.
--Mind Blowing Moment = No, it's not those Sony-brand Wiimotes that everyone thinks is the meaning of life (we all know that's 42 anyway).  My Mind Blowing Moment for Sony was MAG:  Massive Action Game.  The audience literally broke out in applause at the very sight of the party screen, and I along with them, for this first-person shooter can have a whopping 256 online players in a single match.  Natal is an attempt to improve the Xbox Live Camera, Wii Motion Plus is an attempt to improve the Wiimote, and the Glow Wand is a Wii Motion Plus.  MAG was the true advance in gaming at this year's E3.
--WTH?! Moment = The Glow Wand Nah, that's enough ranting out of me on that subject.  The real WTH?! Moment here:  PSP Go.  A $250 PSP that can't play the PSP games you already bought, being announced after Nintendo already has the greatly improved and still-cheaper-and-more-popular-than-the-PSP DSi?  That's almost as stupid and money-wasting as a gaming peripheral that checks your pulse.

Overall (not an average) = A- = Perhaps I sounded a bit fanboyish in my Nintendo review (or maybe I'm just not as inexplicably pessimistic about Nintendo actually attempting to please us gamers), but I say this E3 was amazing.  Great new games, great new peripherals, great new info on games we've been looking forward to, and not one of the 1st party shows disappointed.  Sure, there weren't any new console announcements, but a lack of extra credit doesn't lower your grade, and it looks like we'll be more than happy with what we're getting on current gen anyway.

Microsoft: A-
The things that really got me excited were Modern Warfare 2, (Was shown at the microsoft conference...) Halo ODST trailer, and Halo Reach.  (Btw, Halo is overrated. But in the good way. It deserves it's overrated-ness. GTA on the other hand....)

Sony: A-
Alot of sweet new games coming out like Metal Gear, God of War 3 and MAG.
Nuff said

Nntendo: C
Alot of meh-ness.
Only 3 games intrest me at the moment, Metroid other M, galaxy 2, and Mario and Luigi 3.

Microsoft and Sony both at A- for me, both companies exhibited plenty of games to look forward to and also each had its own new technology involving motion control. I think the Microsoft Natal looks cooler than the Sony wand, but that's just me.

Nintendo D+ - Not as bad as E3 '08, but that was terrible. Only super mario galaxy 2 interests me, and where was zelda wii and pikmin 3?

Microsoft - A. I loved the lack of charts and stats ;)

Sony - B+++. I liked it but I hated it for some reason. Charts.

Nintendo - B-. After reading all your reviews I went in thinking I was going to hate it. It wasn't that bad. Stop looking at it like a critic. Yes they talked about the gay stuff for a while but the good stuff was good and hit my inner child.

EXACTLY!  Everyone here seems to hate the Nintendo E3, and yeah they talked a lot about crappy games, but there were a bunch of good games in there that people are totally ignoring!  It's like Nintendo finally gave some fan games we've been begging for, but no one can seem to notice anything besides Wii Fit and the Vitality sensor.  Ironic that past fans are actually looking for the bad in Nintendo instead of the good.
