Ike huh?
I used to hate Ike... at the start of SSBB being out. A lot of people played as him because he was easy to play and could KO anybody at a decent damage ratio. Add a counter and a good Horizontal recovery and he could be pretty formidable.
But of course, Ike is as good as the person playing AS Him...
Ike's down fall of course is his lack of speed.
Other then his, " A , A , A " Combo and Side B attack...and maybe his Bair...Ike is at a disadvantage IMO.
As far as you getting better....there is nearly an infinite amount of a person getting better with a set character to a degree. You can only get better by fighting people better then you, AND doing what they do (as tricks/techs etc etc) you'll eventually get better.
I recommend Ike ditto'ing with people.... and if they beat you, try to fight like they do so you can become more on there level.
The way I fight and the techs/tricks I learned were from fighting people better then me (IF they used the same characters I did that is).
I'm an Ike user..and so are a few people here.
Thanks to Gamree and Cogs my Ike level is where it is.
So if you want to get better, fight fight fight guy.
Ike overall is pretty much poop.
However, if you learn to be fast with him, he can work for you.
B-air is your friend, as is your N-air and F-air.
Short Hop aerials are your best bet for survival, since they have decent priority and if they fail you have the range with your sword to recover without too much trouble.
Otherwise... I would pick a new character. Ike takes a lot of patience.
As both HTA and Star said, use jab and back air a lot. Nair can combo into aaa, so do that too. Also, at low percents do down throw to up b, or if they DI out of that, dash forward and upsmash. At higher percents, do a b/fthrow into a dash attack.
If you play like Playat, then go watch 2 level 9 CP Ikes fight.
Playat's style is just like the lvl 9 CP's, except more shielding.

I used to suck with Ike. I'm semi-good now because I started playing Ike defensively.
I would give you some advice, but I think everyone here pretty much hit the main points. Plus, I'm feeling incredibly lazy right now. :P
