Well, it has been troubling since...well, since I heard the word.
What is exactly a hardcore game to you?
Is it hardcore if the game has an insane difficulty that you need to pass eventually?
Is it hardcore if you enjoy the game?
Is it hardcore if people think graphics are awesome and not the gameplay (or backwards)?
Is it hardcore if there are many ways to pass it?
I'd like to see your thoughts and answers if you can so I can know the correct answer.
A hardcore game is a game that has gone through a decent development length, either has a long and engaging single player experience or a profound/robust online/multiplayer mode that aims to push it's respective genre and console. Obviously not many achieve this, but that is the ultimate goal. These take a lot more time and money, but when they succeed they're shining examples of how good gaming can be. However, failure's can be almost disastrous.
A casual game would be something like Wii Sports or Wii Play. Something that doesn't take a lot of time, effort, or money to produce to create a simple (or to some extent, easier) experience for people who don't know the in's and out's of gaming. While these tend to make a decent amount of money, assuming they're done right, most of these games barely tap the potential of what gaming can achieve. Too many of these games and it comes across as pandering to the crowd while being lazy.
Graphics IMO isn't really necessary in making a game hardcore.
A hardcore game has "Ingredients" like (and I'm using an Adventure game)
1. Epic Story line.
2. Longevity, atleast 25+ hours long (WITHOUT Side Quests).
Probably a bit more I can list, but it's not AS Important.
Nintendo lacks some of this.

Outside of Zelda and Metroid, Nintendo has none of those.
(and I'm not adding RPG's to that since RPG's are sometimes blatantly padded out with slower gameplay)
IT NEEDS TO HAVE BLOOD AND GUTS AND CREATURES GETTING RIPPED INTO TINY PIECES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Is it fun?
Does it have extensive and unique (read: not repetitive) gameplay?
Does it have extensive and unique (read: not repetitive and actually makes sense) story?
Is it challenging?

So, with that being said, it has come to Nayr and I's attention that Nintendo is Lazy.
Simple as that.

Now, more examples about a hardcore game?
Hardcore games are very long and have many side-quests/secrets to uncover, while casual games are short and very easy to pick up and play.
The best games would mix elements of both, but I'm not going to buy a game at $60 that lasts less than 10 hours.
Most gamers here call a hardcore game the following:
FPS
Fighter
Rated M title
That's about all hardcore is to most people. And most people are what make a definition. We make them for the masses. So the definition of a hardcore title (thanks to idiots) is: a game that's either a FPS or Fighter with an M rating. Some RPG's that are epic too. But MMMMMMMMMMMMMM rated.

Team Fortress 2 came to my mind for some reason...

only the "core who are actually just a bunch of high school and college dudes" think that @_@;;
A Hardcore game to me, is when the development team takes thier time with the game they are creating. Not rushing it, and listening to the fans is quite crucial too.
It also should have quite alot of replay value. ( like side quests, unlockables, and/or a multiplayer mode.
The game should also be quite polished. Having little to no problems that ruin the fun.

SHOW me right now where it said, "I hate Nintendo".
They are lazy IMHO, but I still don't hate them.
They can piss me off, but I don't hate them.
They can again and again disappoint me, but I don't hate them.
WHY do people try to accuse me of something I never even said.(http://assets.nsider2.com/forums/style_emoticons/Classic_Smilies/16x16_man-indifferent.gif)
It's getting annoying.

Because your icon and sig(Genius) looks like Ivan. Remember who has an icon of Ivan. (Genius)
Hated is boiling up in people and they are now attacking you. ;-)
No really I don't know.
And I didn't really answer the question. I think Hardcore games are games that are hyped up by critics and developers w/ money. Ones that are given more praise than usually deserved. (God of War, Halo to name a few) But there can be a few good Hardcore games if they make it a Hardcore game that EVERYONE must play.(Metal Gear, Gears of War)

Um no.
I have to say that post was moronic in every sense of the word.
Hardcore games usually take more skill or experience to complete or do well at.
Pick up and Play not encouraged.
a hardcore multiplayer game requires a few elements:
1. Very strong multiplayer
2. Great depth
3. A good skill/luck balance (skill being far above luck)
4. good precision controls
5. good overall balance
6. a semi-realistic setting.
7. a lack of large exploitable bugs
Notice how I just described counter-strike, Forza, the Halos, Gears, Chess, and TF (minus crits and with sv_true).
RPGs do not fit this setting, because they don't have a realistic setting, and rarely in RPGs do attacks do constant damage.
Cannot have Mario in it.
Cannot be endorsed by soccer moms.
Cannot be produced by Nintendo from 2008-now.
Cannot be learned in two minutes unless you're a nerd.

Note how in the first post by Chris that this is what you think a hardcore game is. An OPINION. Your the moron that called my opinion wrong when there is no true fact to the question. I truly believe that there is no true 'Hardcore' game unless people turn it into one.

Don't be vagina cleaning devices.
Usually, by todays standards in the gaming world, a "hardcore" game must be one that is MLG endorsed, FPS or similarly competitive, and something l337 people can pwn nwbl3ts at.
My standards of a hardcore game are:
-Good storyline, A-movie or novel quality
-Addicting, not necessarily multiple endings, but enjoyable to play through again with no regrets
-Balanced action and puzzles
-Creative use of items/weapons outside of battle
-Optional side quests and self-embarked journeys
-Last but not least, A game that requires a learning curve, and not a pickupandplaybecuzallothergames havesamecontrols

So actual puzzle games can't be hardcore? That bothers me. PPL is about as hardcore of a title as they come.

Well do keep in mind that they were merely MY standards, yours can vary, but i never had much love for pure puzzle games.
Sadly, I dont think any are MLg supported :(

MLG isn't for real gamers.
It's a bunch of pricks who think they can play Halo 3.
If you have ever been on Xbox Live you'd know MLG is a bunch of poop.
Fun, unique, interesting, doesn't usually appeal to a wide audience, and can't be beaten in a short amount of time.

MLG rules are basically Fox vs Falco vs Marth in Melee so yeah, it is a bunch of poop.
It's just BR/Snips on Guardian every time.
What's MLG though?
No More Heroes.

Oh, sorry about the confusion last post Mac. I was trying to make fun of the "ZOMG HARDCOOOORRRRREEEE" high school/college guys who's entire gaming collection consists of Halo, Madden, and Gears of War games. Ya know, the guys that if you bring up an RPG, Platformer, or any fighting without huge boobs, they'll call you a little kid and mock you for your game choice.
But apparently my typing sucked that day XD
To me a hardcore game isn't insanely popular and at the same time extremely fun and addictive. (Metal Slug, Golden Sun, etc.)
You can also make a popular game into a insanely hardcore game if you go into it's metagame. (Pogermons, Street Fighter, etc.)
Of course games don't have to be hardcore to be fun (Super Mario Galaxy, CoD4, etc.)

well duh, I was just trying to say that MLG doesnt have enough finesse in their choices of games. Anyone can no-scope, but it takes someone with no life to just pop them off on a daily basis. Sorry for not making it that clear :O :(

Yeah, really.
MLG is a bunch of poop. I can beat half of those poop holes who think they're tough poop easy, and I'm not even that good at games like Halo 3.
Besides, it's only about Halo, and nothing else.
I'd like to see them survive a second in Battlefield: Bad Company, as well.Quote from: wiiboychris on June 08, 2009, 06:09:02 AM

And actually I was correlating Smash MLG rules to Halo MLG rules, which are just as stupid. I wasn't even commenting about Smash MLG rules at first. lol thats where the "BR/Snips on Guardian..." comment was...well...coming from.
