Google is coming out with it's own OS.
http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2009/07/introducing-google-chrome-os.html?csp=Tech (http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2009/07/introducing-google-chrome-os.html?csp=Tech)
This was in today's newspaper:
Google is coming out with their OS to compete with next years Windows 7, Microsoft is considering it a direct revenue attack, the OS will be targeted at netbooks but will eventually build up to full desktop computers, and it's open source.
What does everyone think?
If it eventually supports games on a demanding PC, awesome. If not, I can't say that I'll use it; I don't have a netbook.
Can't say it is surprising, but we're going to see an all out war ensue.
PC: Video gaming.
Mac: Multimedia editing and creation.
Chrome: Intrawebz.
That's how I see it.
I'll probably use it since it's Open Source ^_^
I'm so happy for Google :D

Lol, an OS for going on the internet.
Useless for now.
But, one day, mark my words, Google will rule the world.

(20:20:51) lichig0: I knew it was going to happen
(20:21:07) brother: well, google is about to take over the world I guess
(20:21:15) lichig0: Just about
I see it as essentially being Ubuntu in Google form. Simple, fast and streamlined, but of little use for anything other than browsing the internet and word processing.
F_H, you do realize that Steam and Steam games work in Ubuntu
And if you ask why I've been using Windows:
Laptop use of Windows: I actually can't play games because ATI refuses to make drivers for Linux so I can't do 3D things
Windows on my Desktop: Can't get online with my poopty wireless, but then again, I can't seem to get online for more than 10 minutes

oh god he's doing the fanboy thing again make it stop
Will suck unless they come up with a new cloud computing platform or something neat like that.
Right now there is no reason to pick this over other operating systems.

That still leaves plenty of games that don't. That argument is like saying the Mac can play games too. No one ever said it couldn't, but what you have access to is quite limited. Every game released for the computer is designed to play on Windows first, anything else second.
Maybe they did this so they can stay ahead of Bing.

I lol'd so hard at that :D
I just heard about this today. I might want to try it out if it is free or at least cheap.

Open Source = Free

Just a few of my notes on this blog post:
QuoteThe software architecture is simple — Google Chrome running within a new windowing system on top of a Linux kernel.
This is just a Linux kernel. Google is making its own Window System, different from Gnome, KDE, Xfce, or whatever else is out there.
QuoteFor application developers, the web is the platform. All web-based applications will automatically work and new applications can be written using your favorite web technologies. And of course, these apps will run not only on Google Chrome OS, but on any standards-based browser on Windows, Mac and Linux thereby giving developers the largest user base of any platform.
The OS will have more focus on "web technologies" for apps; rather than mainly focusing on compiled programs from C, C++, etc., we'll see things like uncompiled AJAX running as standalone programs.
If I'm not mistaken, "web technologies" tend to be resource hogs in comparison to compliled desktop programs, so I don't see that as being so good.
QuotePeople want to get to their email instantly, without wasting time waiting for their computers to boot and browsers to start up. They want their data to be accessible to them wherever they are and not have to worry about losing their computer or forgetting to back up files. Even more importantly, they don't want to spend hours configuring their computers to work with every new piece of hardware, or have to worry about constant software updates.
Fast boot time. Lots of drivers.
The backing up files bit sounds like they'll have... remote backup of personal files? If I say so myself, that doesn't sound like the best privacy around. It'll probably be limited to your /home directory.
It also sounds like they won't release many software updates at all.
In my opinion, if Google wants to rule the Internet so much, they should instead put all this effort in trying to make a better, free, and open-source alternative to Adobe Flash. With YouTube in their grasp, it wouldn't be a hard thing to promote.

Now THAT'S the way to take over the Internet.
Nonononono, Google is going to take over more than the internet, they're going to take over the world.
Google will become self aware and kill us all.
