For 500 dallars or less. I want to be able to run fallout 3. It doesn't need peripherals. I would prefer XP as an OS.
You can't get a gaming PC for 500 or less.
It just can't be done.
Get a 360 and XBL.
You could probably build a rig to run fallout 3 for under 500$, but probably at low to medium settings.
500$ might be enough to cover a good 22' widescreen monitor.
Ouch, under $500 is going to be hard...

I built mine for 300 dollars and can play fallout 3 on medium. All I need is a better video card. It can be done >:(
I'm using an old case and an old crt monitor though :3
Can someone give me a good build that would cost below $500? I'd take running it on the lowest possible settings.

dallars
.......
plus like others said......you prolly can't get too much for under $500
Not too confident in finding parts that work well with each other, but I'll give it a try, since I'm pulling an all nighter I could use something to do to pass the time...
......if you're building a gaming machine, most of your money will end up going towards a graphics card unless you get a semi-extreme processor; I'd suggest starting a build arond one.

??? if you are paying 500 bucks for a good 22 inch monitor then you are being ripped off

just get poop off newegg. I'm guessing you already have a monitor, keyboard, etc, so all you need are the case components. Fallout 3 is gpu intensive, not very cpu intensive, so you can skimp out on the cpu (maybe a low end amd dual core). Get one of the newer ATI graphics cards and you should be set.

Ripped off? A good one will run you 299-350$ Plus taxes and or warranty bumps it up another hundred or so.

My parents got mine for just over 200. Works great.
Also, I might be able to make something work for 500 (I'm REALLY going to have to skimp, and no monitor included), but it would go obsolete very, very quickly. If you can manage another 100, things will improve dramatically.
EDIT: $525 is the best I can do. Wait and save up. Also, it's Vista. XP is going to cost more.

I don't care if it goes obsolete. I just want to be able to play Fallout 3 on the lowest settings. If thats too much, Oblivion on the lowest settings. If that costs too much, I would want to play TF2 with very little lag that isn't connection based.
Why do you need it so cheap?

I bet you can shave a few bucks off with a cheaper CPU and GPU maybe even a smaller hard drive, the PSU might not even need to be the much...
Processor (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103218)
Hard Drive (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136075)
Graphics Card (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121319)
Get those two instead you save $30(with the rest of the build from Yoshi), but I'm not 100% sure about that processor...
That graphics card will save you a few bucks, should work fine, comes with a free game too

This is not true. You can build a pretty decent PC for 500 dollars. You wouldn't be able to play games such as crysis or far cry 2 on high smoothly. You can still get a pretty good one though.
I can't see PY's parts.
The here was a link to a whishlist the made: http://secure.newegg.com/WishList/PublicWishDetail.aspx?WishListNumber=11260672
If you can't see the wishlist then someone will have to post the parts individually, I want to get some sleep...

the guy probably already has windows. Take that one off the list, upgrade the gpu (9500 will not run fallout very well), and put in the windows CD you already have.

The dell E2209W is decent, and it runs for 200 bucks. I got one for 100 through a third party, so it doesn't run anywhere near 500.
ok, i took out the OS and the DVD drive since you should already have those, and I upgraded the video card and RAM. This should run fallout 3 on med-high settings:

Fallout runs on Ultra High on a 512MB HD4850 @ 1440x900. The only reason he'd need a 4870 is if he wanted to play Crysis (lol insane system requirements) or games at very high resolutions (1920x1200+). Also, 2 gigs of RAM? Going to want more than that. Perhaps not if he's going to be running XP forever, but if he plans on updating to 7 at any point, yes.
If 7's any good, I'll buy more ram.

It can be done, especially if old parts are going to be used in the new computer. Main upgrade is the graphics card for gaming.

Well, I only have 1 gig in my desktop at the moment, I'm also only using XP.
RAM is cheap, 2 gigs should be fine and when you get the money you can easily add more RAM, or if you have enough money from the start go ahead and get more RAM

i think you are being a little too generous. It may run ultra high with that in some parts, but if you are outside you'd be getting below 15 FPS, which while technically "running" is not exactly "playable"
And 2 gigs of RAM is plenty for now. RAM is super cheap and it will be even cheaper when he needs to upgrade. With 4 memory slots in the MoBo he doesn't even have to replace the old ones.
The thing is, you can get one for $500. However, it would be a waste of time, since you would have to completely overhaul it in a year or two, since you will be buying an already obsolete machine.
I don't care if it's obsolete. I don't want some ?ber gaming PC. I just want something to run Fallout3 smoothly on the lowest posibble settings.

do you guys even read the thread? I've already provided a link for a comp for under 500 dollars which is certainly not obsolete and won't be even close for at least 2 years.

Nope, those specs that I gave are from my own system. I know that they're right.
