Question:
Out of these two, which Final Fantasy do I buy next?
Option 1: Final Fantasy VII

Option 2: Final Fantasy IX

I've recently picked up a PS2, since my brother salvaged a DVD player from somewhere (=|) and doesn't require his PS2 anymore (...), so to break it out, I've been playing the incredibly small library I have for it. In an attempt to expand this library, I bought Final Fantasy VIII (8, in case you missed the extra "I" there.). For $15, factory sealed. (._.) Five days after buying it (Today), I('ve) realized something.
I have to buy VII and IX to finish the set. And I honestly don't know which one to buy. Buy VII and humor it, or buy IX and enjoy it? So, what better way to choose than let the Legacy Boarders choose for me? Which one do I buy, and why?
And to pass the time, here's a little game: Count out how many times the letter "I" makes an appearance in this post.
9 is a better game. Regardless of what the fanboys say, 9 is a more enjoyable game.
8 is a good game. Hands down.
And while VII maybe a "better" game, IX is cheaper and less overrated.
IX is a great game. I always put it on my 4th favorite of all the FF games. VII just was kinda meh. The story wasn't as involving as many people say.
So, IX. Or even better, get X :)
To complete the "set" you need more than just those two games. But if you were to have to choose between the two, I'd personally go with VII, though IX is almost as enjoyable.
It depends on your taste.
VII is set in a more modern time, and every character gets an equal opportunity for every ability. In that sense, I like it more because you can customize your characters as you want. Fanboys do generalize this game as "the best", which I personally disagree with, but it is not a game to be overlooked because some think it's overrated. It is certainly fun and has a moving storyline. It also has much more side stuff than IX: Two optional characters that have big subplots themselves, action sequences that are replayable at the Golden Saucer, and the chocobo breeding system that opens up more sidequests (such as getting the Knights of the Round materia.) Then we have to two optional WEAPON bosses that are hugely challenging.
IX brings the game back to medieval times, and each character generally has a specific ability. IX is a more traditional Final Fantasy in that sense. This game is my third personal favorite out of the entire series, preceded by VII and IV moving down to my favorite. It does have a very moving plot, and one scene in particular always gets me, you'll know it when the song "You're Not Alone!" starts to play. The game is much bigger, spanning over four discs rather than VII's three, and every character will grow on you. Then we have Tetra-Master, the card game which is infinitely addicting. One other thing to note that is really cool about this game, is that summon monsters, Eidolons, are actually a part of the story, and some have some pretty cool cut scenes.
My sole reason for liking VII over IX is the customization. Both are incredible games and it's a very, very tough call between the two games for me. I almost consider them both my second favorite.

ON THAT NOTE: Your "Set" isn't complete without the following:
PS1:
Final Fantasy Origins - Final Fantasy I and II bundled on one disc.
Final Fantasy Chronicles - Final Fantasy IV and Chrono Trigger on two discs.
Final Fantasy Anthology - Final Fantasy V and VI on two discs.
PS2:
Final Fantasy X
Final Fantasy IV is my personal favorite, though I kind of have bias toward it.
Final Fantasy VI and V are both amazing as well.
Chrono Trigger isn't a Final Fantasy, but worth a play.
Final Fantasy I and II are the earliest games so may not appeal, but can be fun.
Thanks everyone, I'll start looking for IX.

The set I'm referring to is the actual PS1 Final Fantasies (VII-IX), not the remakes. Then again, I already have Anthology......crap.

I don't know,
that one scene turns me away from buying it. Eventually, though. D=
X is a viable option xD it was a tad scary for me though. A few parts in X-2 even more so.
But a majority of X-2 just seemed dumb :U
