Title: Birds vs. Cars
Post by: Dog Food on July 26, 2009, 03:54:07 PM
Birds. Cars. What happens when the two meet? An epic race against the clock, a daring game, a monstrous feat. You all know what I'm talking about. You've all witnessed it, perhaps even played by the bird's rules. It all starts with an innocent car drive, but what once was a simple luxury can become so much more when an encounter with a bird occurs. As you've been driving, have you ever noticed a small bird along the curb, fluttering it's wings and walking around? You keep driving, thinking very little of it, when suddenly things take a turn for the worst. And that is when the game is at its peak.

The bird flutters it's wings, a first sign something is about to go horribly wrong. Suddenly it is gliding across the pavement, daringly grazing the man-made surface. You aren't fast enough to stop your car. The only sign something has happened is a lone feather caught by the wind. You chance a glance in the rear-view mirror, realizing what just occurred. But no, the bird won it's game today. It has settled itself on the other side of the road, looking blas? with it's achievement.

Seriously, these birds have wings, don't they? Why do they always seem to fly in the range of a car's wheels, when they could so easily just fly above us? I experience this incident with birds all the time, though I never seem to hit any of them, no matter how close it seems. Do you often get close-calls with birds, and what are your theories on why they seem to have taken up on this daring past time?

We were coming back up here near Chicago from Mississippi one day, and a bird just smashed right into the windshield. It was pretty darn funny to me, but not my dad because we were in a rental car and Tweety could've damaged it. xD

;_; KJ why'd you make this topic.

I have never hit an animal before in my life, until two weeks ago.
The bird flew kamikaze style into my wheel.
I looked in my rear view mirror hoping I didn't hit it, and all I could see were feathers flying everywhere.
I've felt guilty since.
;_;

I don't my parents have ever hit a bird with driving before. Probably some close calls.
I killed a frog by accidentally swatting it as it jumped out of my hands. I tried to catch it, but it flipped and landed face first on my driveway, then died. ;__;

D: I'm sorry <3

Like I've said, it's a deadly game for the birds. They're practically trying to get themselves killed! I mean, they can fly as high as the sky, and yet they seem to enjoy darting at high speeds as low as they can toward our cars.

Ew. What an unnecessary and surprising death.

Me vs. a car? I drive the car! Oh wait.
Anyways, this bothers me. I always end up slowing down when they're just sitting in the road, and then they fly away. >:(

One time there was a bird eating something in the street, and I guess it ate too much. My mom thought it was gonna fly out of the way, but I guess it couldn't. D:

I slow up only a tad, and if no one is coming, I'll move over a little bit so as not to blatantly run over the bastards. Never hit one of them yet, but I killed a squirrel with my car once. I felt horrible. ;-;

I just kill the thing.

Me and my dad were driving on the highway, and we were having a good time, when we could CLEARLY see a bird coming right at us. And I remember what my dad said. He said, "Yep, that thing is dead."

SPLAT!

The thing splattered across the windshield, the whole thing, feathers everywhere.

And he just pulled over and wiped it off.

My sister hit one on her first drive on the Freeway. Driving driving driving... BAM! Blood and bird on the windshield.
She cried a little (or made a little cry baby voice)

Heh, I've hit a bird once.  It hit the elantra's front right above the grille, bounced up, then hit the wondow with a almost satisfying "SMACK".

I was going 40.  Doubt the dumbpoop survived.

I always find it odd how birds think they're safest flying RIGHT IN FRONT OF A 2,000 POUND PLUS THING GOING AT LEAST 25 MPH :|

Whaddya expect.  Probably where the insult "bird brained" came from.

Okay, so picture this:

I live directly by the high school. Between the high school and civilization, there are woods. Not exactly the biggest, but they're the home to some small animals. Apparently a hawk found out about this. Now, it's just sitting there in the street, and now a car is coming. It expects the hawk to move. It doesn't. He stops just in time, and eventually cars come behind him. They start honking, until they realize the intercourse ing thing won't move, then they stop.

Don't know what they were expecting to happen, just sitting there (maybe the hawk will curl up and die? I dunno.) but they sat there. For ten minutes. So a brave soul stepped out of his car, with a baseball bat, in an attempt to scare the bird. So he goes running up to the hawk, when it promptly decided to jump up, and scratch the intercourse  out of his face with it's talons.

After a while the the hawk killing this man, some other people got out of their cars, and got it off of him.

This happened right outside of my house.

This same thing happens with squirrels around here, too.  Although I'd love to think they're trying to mess with us, I think the answer lies in instinct: there's something dangerous coming -> we need to move to where we wanted to go -> we should wait until the last second just in case it tries to change its trajectory to our new location

That's my theory.

I drive the darkest backroads to work everynight.

My near death experineces with animal life are many and excessive.

I suspect they are aware I would sooner kill myself than another living being.

They may be having fun with me.

'Look at this human! He will nearly drive off a bridge to avoid us! What sillyness!'
