Title: How do I create SMF nameservers?
Post by: Kayo on August 24, 2009, 06:14:26 AM
Anyone familiar with the inner workings of SMF? I have my domain parked, but i still need to create two nameservers for it. How do I do this? Am i missing something?

Thanks in advance..

If you have absolutely no technical knowledge with web development, design, forums, php, etc. then you shouldn't even bother making a forum.

And DNS has absolutely nothing to do with SMF.

You're probably better off using InvisionFree or Zetaboards.

I just brought up SMF so maybe you'd know what I was talking about. And how do you expect me to know all this? You had to learn it at some point, didn't you? Why won't you just tell me where i register them?

I actually used invisionfree for my first forum, and i loved the customization, but i still like SMF a little better.

Based on your sig I'd say you're using the free (wait, free wat) of smf, smfforfree. If you are sticking with that, which is what I suspect, then you're fairly limited in what you can do. Please, tell me you aren't intending on buying hosting. Are you just planning on having a domain redirect to your smfforfree?

That's exactly what I'm doing, since I currently can't afford to pay the large fee of customization (add removal, smilies, domains, etc.)

For now i got a redirect link, and i'm trying to use it (cuz i broked my forums trying to use it without the nameservers :-[)

Can you help me?

You are aware the actual software is in fact free - we are on it here at NSF. If you have your own hosting (which I highly recommend you don't get just yet), you can choose what smileys, etc. The fees for hosting would only average a few dollars a month (10 maybe - not much)...which is a lot better than the ad removal, etc. details they would offer. Again, stick with what you have for now.

In terms of that, domains are far from my specialty. I can assist with the finer details in the acp, and ultimately ftp, but just ask Silver. He has the most experience with them here.

The software NSFCD uses may be free, but the right to have a domain and edit smileys was not (right?)

I can pretty much control anything in the SMF ACP, i just can't figure out this domain thing >_>

I tried googling it, but of course that didnt help, all my results took me to a site i had to pay to sign up for. <_<

1. Buy some cheapass hosting and a domain.
2. Use the nameservers from the host for the domain.
3. Install SMF.
4. Wait for domain to propagate.
5. ????
6. Profit!

Silver got it.  You need to find out the nameserver information from whatever company provides your hosting.

Well, i put the nameservers into the domain manager and when i tried to update the URL i got this:

An Error Has Occurred!
Domain name is not setup correctly! Please make sure that you own the domain name and that you have created and setup the nameservers.

How do i prove that I own the domain? and did i put the nameservers in the wrong place?

The name servers have to be put in through the domain you purchased control panel.  If you own the domain, there should be a control panel for it somewhere on the site of the company you bought the domain from.

Free domains can't be used for SMF, since most of them don't provide nameservers.

alright. i have no real way to pay for one because i'm not old enough for a credit card where i live >_>

I'll just forget it and stick to my redirect URL until I can pay like $10 credit (last i remember domains were $5) >_>

Thanks anyway
