Title: Connection without Connection
Post by: Dog Food on September 04, 2009, 01:34:09 PM
So, my laptop is failing me. It's not even a year old yet. Technically it's my dad's laptop, but I stole it. Anyway, I look at the wireless connections, and I find mine. It has about three bars and looks totally accessible. I try clicking it, and without even attempting to load I get a screen that tells me that I cannot connect, and no diagnosis can be given. Basically, the laptop is just as confused as I am. It can't figure out the problem, it can't connect to any single wireless network (I tried all five in my area), and so therefore I can only get internet on my computer. This computer isn't a laptop, and it is connected to a wireless network that isn't even shown on my laptop.

In fact (and this is the strangest part), this all happened during a Wedding Reception (for lesbians that just got married - and both of my parents are against gay marriages) that we hosted at my house. During the end, I went upstairs to check my laptop, and I had no internet. But, I had some new network choices I had never seen before, one of them being the name of one of the party guests downstairs who had left. So, I can't connect to the internet, and now I have these three foreign networks that I can't connect to either and won't go away.

This is also the reason why I will not be coming by very often. Until my laptop is fixed, I can only get on here for about 20 minutes after school, and on weekends I'm not sure if I'll be able to at all. I don't think many of you know me, or care, so this isn't the big issue and really doesn't deserve much mention. Although I'm participating in a few games and such so I thought I'd like to make that known.

Okay, so, any help? I turned my laptop off this morning, and later today I'll turn it back on and see if that changed anything. Until then, ideas?

From my experience with laptops, there are like three different ways to connect to one network, explore a bit.

I know a good bit about networking.
First off, do you have a router in your house?

Unless you are getting like free public wi-fi, I need to know what kind of router it is and how your computer is connected to it.

Really, I need more info.

Next, you can always manually connect to a network using a new IP Address and whatnot.
What happens to your computer is when you connect to a network, it will save the connection in its stored list of used networks. These are not always accessible, but still show up in the list.

Randomly connecting to whatever you find is a horrible idea, no offense, so you really need to tell me what our connection is from the comp.

Doesn't sound like the problem, sounds more like the router does not recognize her computer anymore or some poop like that.
