Title: TV Broadcasting Times
Post by: Dog Food on September 18, 2009, 05:28:51 AM
I've always been confused about this, although I think I basically know the answer. But let's say that you want to watch a show that's at 9 Eastern, would that mean it is 8 Central, 7 Mountain, and 6 Pacific? And what about Canada, do they follow the same broadcasting times as the US? Since it's a different country, I wondered if they had a different schedule, but since they are basically in the same timezones as the US, probably not, right?

To make a long thread short: a show airs once for everyone at different times, not at different times at the same hour, yes/no?

Well, usually the show will be on at the same time nationally. So, ESTers could be watching a show at 8pm EST while PSTers are watching that same show at 5pm. Same thing if something is live, too. But I'm sure there are some exceptions.

Canada uses the same time zones as the US.

Canada also has one time zone the US does not have (Atlantic time), but we are generally grouped in with you guys. So people on our West Coast watch the same things as people on yours.

Well Atlantic time is only an hour ahead of EST IIRC, since they're further east than Maine.

Erm, that only applies to things that are shown live (football games).

Everything else runs on its own system usually. A prerecorded show that is shown at maybe 9pm est is shown at 9pm pst as well if its the same network, but live games air whenever, and its up to the station to work shows around these live showings.

Most programs, where I live at least, say "Watch '_______' at 9/8 Central on Thursdays!", or something to that effect. Does this mean that only Eastern and Central have shows at the same time, or...?

Eh. If something airs at 9 Pacific, it will normally air at 9 Mountain, 9 Central, and 9 Eastern on the same network. The thing to remember here is the time shift. 9pm on the west coast is 1am on the east. Why they say 2 different time zones I do not know.

Keeping things simple, Ignore the time zone you are not in. If it says 9 in your time zone, it will air at 9 in another time zone.

...this is a rather confusing topic.

Canada MADE time zones. ;)
No, really, some guy named Sanford Fleming made it (He actually lived in my town, hence why the nearby college is called Sir Sandford Fleming) :P

When they announce when tv shows are going to be on in canada, it goes like this:

NEXT WEEK ON LOST

SOMEONE DIES.

STUFF IS BLOWN UP

KATE IS PREGNANT

NEXT WEEK.  LOST 10/9 CENTRAL

The first number (10) is Eastern time.  The second number (9) (number 9 number 9 number 9) is Central.  They don't announce the western time zones because I'm in Manitoba, and there are still three provinces west of me, and they don't announce Atlantic because intercourse  the newfies.

That's exactly how they do it here for the people on the east coast. They show the regular time, and then specify that Central is one hour earlier. When it comes to Mountain and Pacific times, how does that work? Blaze says everything shows at the same hour at their own time, but my own TV programs contradict that theory (for Central only, though). Does Mountain show at 8/7 Pacific, or do those two have their own paired scheduling?
