Say, have you ever heard of Kaizo Mario World? It's a ROM hack of Super Mario World, retooled to be much harder (And cheaper) than the actual Super Mario World, or any Mario game for that matter. So much so that many Mario ROM hacks are reminiscent of Kaizo Mario's difficulty, traps, and abundance of invisible coin blocks.
What does that have to do with Super Mario Bros. 2? Well, if Kaizo Mario is sadistically difficult, then Super Mario Bros. 2 is insanely difficult! You could say that some of Kaizo Mario's traps were either inspired or
taken from this game.
"But wait SkyMyl! Super Mario Bros. 2 was an easy game!"

Yeah, I'm not talking about this.
No, I'm talking about Super Mario Bros: The Lost Levels. The game that was released in Japan, but not released in America because either A: It was too hard, or B: It was too similar to the original Super Mario Bros. Instead, we got a game called Doki Doki Panic, only changed to look like a Mario game. (In case you didn't know by this point (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/YouShouldKnowThisAlready).)
You can buy this game on the Virtual Console for 600 Wii Points, or if you have Super Mario All Stars for the Super Nintendo, you can play a graphically enhanced version of all the Mario NES Mario's, including this one.
The game improves upon everything the original Mario had, while making it much harder at the same time. Poison Mushrooms appear for the first time, acting as if an enemy hit you, Super Springs are also added, which are springs on steroids, Hammer Brothers that actually
move, Bloopers that float in the air, Lakitus underwater, and backwards warp zones that send you back to a previous world are all new obstacles that stand in your way of rescuing your
fair Princess Peach.

Trust me, it's much more intimidating on the Famicom.
One thing different about this Mario, is that there is no 2-Player option. Instead, you get to play as either Mario, or Luigi.
Mario and Luigi also control differently than they did in the first game. Luigi can jump higher than Mario, while Mario has better traction than Luigi. While parts of the game are easier with one brother, the same holds true for the opposite difficulty.
While the gameplay is almost exactly the same as the first SMB, the levels are all new, and they're much more difficult. MUCH. MORE. DIFFICULT. Bowser's Castles are designed to make sure you get there on one life, and die within
seconds of arriving in the castle, forcing you to restart the world. The third level in each world can only be described as an embodiment of hell. The third level in World five, for example starts out as a stage that loops infinitely unless you go down a pipe that leads you to the second half of the stage, in which there is no ground, only pipes, floating platforms, and Bullet Bills.
Luckily, new to this game, once you get a Game Over, you actually see a Game Over screen that gives you the options of restarting from the first level of the world you died in...or going back to the Title Screen, for some odd reason.
And if you enjoy torturing yourself, if you beat all eight worlds without using any warps (Including Backward Warps), you'll progress to world 9, which gives you four
more levels to get through. As an added bonus, if you beat the game
eight times in a row, you can progress to Worlds A, B, C, and D, which, in total with World 9, gives you
twenty levels to burn through. I remember a contest held by Nintendo Power, stating that if could beat World 9 and had photographic evidence of you doing such, you could send in a photo and they would send you a patch for your accomplishment.
Damn.
If you're going to buy this game, (If you haven't already) then GOOD FREAKING LUCK. You're not only going to need it, but that's all you're going to have by your side. If there's one last thing that needs to be said, it's this.

I beat it on Super Mario All-Stars.
It's freaking hard! I probably wouldn't have beaten it if I played the original, since the SMAS version lets you save after each world.
I have never beaten that game.
But I do agree that the games difficulty level is near or above pro level.
They have so many huge gaps that are almost impossible to jump over without a constructive mind.
IMO, this seems more like a thinking game rather than your average sidescrolling Mario games.
LOL.
The repetitiveness of rescuing countless numbers of Toads.
I'd love to see someone actually manage a speedrun with this one.
I've beaten all thirteen worlds.
Check out BrainScratch Comms on Youtube, for the Lost Levels playthrough (Just RAW's for now, no commentary) for proof that I did all of it.
World 9 is like WTF!? Lakitu's in the water, Bowser as a normal enemy, and glitches galore.
