If you saw it, did you like it?
I for one, loved it.
The movie was gorgeous, had great characters and had a pretty decent plot.
I expect it to win at least a couple of Oscars.
AMAZING
I just saw it, definitely one of the best movies of 2009.
Special Effects: Amazing
3D: Completely immersing
Acting: Top notch
Story: It sucked. :| Sorry, but the story has been done so many times before, and now it's just become stale.
That's not saying I didn't like the movie, as I did; I just think the lack of a great story dragged the rest of it a bit down.
bad movie is bad.
Just because it has good CG doesn't mean it's a good movie. The 3D was just okay, but it's still just a stupid gimmick that adds absolutely nothing to films.
the characters were shallow and one shot, and the only person who grew AT ALL was Jake, and even then his character arc was blatantly obvious and unoriginal. Story was basically Ferngully in space or intergalactic Dances With Wolves...
THIS is the movie that will change film making? I doubt it. After this year no one will even remember it. Fuck you James Cameron for wasting so much money on a movie I'd seen a million times before, especially when the money could go to more worthwhile projects... like District 9, which was by far the superior film on a budget less than 10% of Avatar's

I'm going to see this with a few friends, so I'll be able to find out for myself. If the plot's really that awful and It's 3 hours long...Oh boy. I better be ready for a poopload of tangents.
I hate the media... I really do.
NBC's Nightly News ended their program on how great Avatar was and how it's "deeper meaning is wonderful and great" even though they're clearly not even using their heads or they would've seen that it's philandering and too obvious. They interviewed briefly two off the street people (both of whom were obvious that they're not film critics) and a film critic who called it a perfect movie.
Good lord these guys wouldn't know a good movie if Hitchcock, Spielberg, and Orson Wells collaborated on the best story driven film in cinema history and handed it right to them.
Thank you NSF, you have confirmed my doubts about this movie.
I actually fell asleep through it :x
It just bored the hell out of me. Sure, it looks pretty. It really does, and I don't think we can take anything away from it in that department. But if I had half a billion to blow on a movie, I'm sure I could make something with decent graphics and effects too. And I guarantee you there wouldn't be people sleeping.
What bothers me is that a film that is good is getting all the recognition, while the great films (Up, District 9, etc.) get ignored largely. Then again, Transformers was the top earning film of 2009 (Avatar hitting in 2010, monetary wise)...so what does that tell you.

It's that the general populous is a slab of blithering morons when it comes to movies.
Or cinema in it's entirety has hit the same place in the "animation ghetto" there was in the 1950's- 1980's (with things like Batman the Animated Series slowly but surely at least giving credibility to it). Basically what I getting at is that there is so little non-dribble inducing material that people don't know what is genuinely good and can't see the faults of what they watch. *sigh* but whatever I guess. That type of marketing seems to be working, hell look at the Wii...
It's disappointing as hell though. See, games and movies from large companies are just going to find a mainstream and roll with it. They always do - it's no risk and high profit. It's about time we started seeing movies that take risks.
The Outpost (http://8th-circuit.com/?q=content/review-outpost) is my case and point - in order to finance it, the creators sold their home. Sure, it's not the best movie I've ever seen. But I appreciate it for what it is. A high risk movie on a low budget with something new to offer the genre (admittedly, it's not a huge leap forward).
Instead, we see movies like, I don't know, Avatar or Will Smith in Seven Pounds.

We desperately need another Star Wars. A movie that none of the studios thought would be good, and in their arrogance let the creators do whatever and when it succeeds they look all the more foolish. Well, the first step is to stop supporting all the garbage that comes out, and the only way that'll happen is if the people start responding, which of course they won't since they don't know any better.
**personally can't wait to get out of "blech" college, and go onto grad school at a film college**
*After watching Avatar*
So basically, humans are greedy, corrupted bastards and the blue people are like giant Native Americans?
That makes perfect sense.
Yeah, I still liked it, but still, GAH!
I thought it was pretty darn good.
Only thing I disliked was the plot.
HURF HUMANS BAD, NATURE GOOD.
Also, Avatar proved all deity's wrong unless you worship trees.
Oh boy, I'm now able to discuss it/throw in my opinions.

Wait, what?
Story stinks to you yet the
acting is top notch?
I'm mindintercourse ed.
Anyways, I kinda liked it; It was pretty cool in some area's but as most people, the main thing I hate is the plot. The plot's motivation is my main problem with that. Ok, some people from the US go in to get money from the tree's? Great. The people want there land safe? Wait; They don't even say that. Now they want to blow up everything with no plotline? Uh... And the moral of the story is completely hypocritical to the whole peace thing? Wait, what?
Yeah, not my kinda motivation.
I really enjoyed Avatar. One of the best movies I've seen in a long time, and I liked it a whole lot more than most pretty much all '09 movies. The story is very similar to Distric 9. Alien and human relationships that both place the human race on the "bad side".

They wanted the large stockpile unobtainium, a very valuable mineral, under the native's village/ big tree thing. The natives won't move because they share a bond with nature that is biological as well as spiritual. That's pretty much the reason for the attack on the na'vi.
I don't ever recall peace between the races as a very prominent theme in the movie either, but then again some people think the movie had a hidden theme that attacks Bush's time in office... The biggest theme I found from the movie was to not kill nature and stuff.
Unobtainium? Wait what? You shhould be able to come up with a more original name than that.
"lol its unobtainable so lets call unobtainium"

It doesn't even emphasize on that. They just blow poop up near the end instead of even getting it. Yeah, the beginning made sense, but then it went into a total poopfest.

I just saw it today and I loved it.
I, for one, did not expect it to live up to the hype that it has received, but it surpassed any expectations I had for it.
EDIT: How weird... Three consecutive sentences beginning with "I".
Anyway, I wanted to go to Pandora after watching the movie as well.
I quite liked it...and I really wanted to go to Pandora.
Or at least get a cool tail. ;_;

I saw it last weekend in 3D. It was good, but I thought it was a little long and the plot has been done many times. Graphics were nice, though.

I was simply comparing the majority of the film to the crappy story it had. The acting certainly wasn't the best I've ever seen, but it made what little the movie had believable and added to the world of Pandora. Plus, it's Sigourney Weaver. Can't go wrong with her.
But instead of wasting your money on this, GO SEE UP IN THE AIR.
Ok, I'm pretty late to discuss this. I just went to see Avatar today and what I thought on a scale of 1- 10 it would be on is a 9.
Ok, let me break it down here. The beginning of this movie was a little confusing at first. I saw it in 3D IMAX and yet they were right about the graphics having a mind blowing effect on people. I generally don't listen to the media but they were right about this. Also, the action of this movie would keep you on the edge of your seat quiet a bit. There was one con i noticed. The plot of the story like a lot of you said in here is pretty unoriginal. It had somewhat of a Pocahontas theme going on in it if any of you noticed. The theme has been used in soo many movies that it was easy enough to foreshadow what was going to happen. Yet, even though it had an unoriginal theme, the story itself was written out pretty well. The actors were ok and fit pretty well into the story. I think people see this as a big step higher into graphic animation in movies and can be built off of it.
care to explain how some pretty CG but no story warrants a 9/10?
I thought it was alright. Were the 3d effects good? Yeah. Did they blow me out of my seat? No. The story was an oft recycled one, and the characters acted in predictable ways, with some characters seemingly crowbarred in, such as the latino chopper pilot.
After a few conversations, though, I think that people walked away from that movie either wanting to drive a mech or wanting to have an avatar. My wife and I both wanted Mechs. WHICH WOULD YOU RATHER HAVE?

hmmm....never thought of it that way. I don't know which one i would have.
Here's how it went (note: I didn't watch it in 3-D. Seems a little gimmicky IMO):
Visuals: The visuals were amazing. Obvious some work was done here.
Sound Effects: Good here as well. A relative of mine actually worked on the sound effects :)
Acting: At times, it was good. There are some rather cheezy lines in the film. And you gotta hand it to them to keep a straight face when talking about "unobtanium" XD
Plot: Generic, recycled, and overall blah. Sure, good moral: Greed is a poopty thing to have. But, the "Unobtanium" didn't help at all, honestly. REALLY ORIGINAL NAME FOR A PLOT DEVICE.
So, yeah, if it weren't for the bad plot and occasionally cheezy lines, I'd put it as one of my favorites. BUT THAT SHIT DRAGGED IT DOWN >:(
