Title: I'll just play some FFIX now...what the intercourse .
Post by: SkyMyl on January 14, 2010, 08:04:23 AM
It's been four months since I've played Final Fantasy IX, so I decided to finally get back to it after putting it off for some time.
He stopped playing because he didn't want to miss any Lost Forevers.
But one swift kick changed all that. :3

Where was I? Right, playing card games in Treno. I seem to remember that I beat Cid on my first try, and every try after consisted of him using an oglop to rape my summon card. If someone knows how that's possible, please let me know. |:
And this would be his second excuse for putting off the game for so long...
You know, for someone who hates FFX, you stopped playing every other game at the time until you finished X.

Anyway, after beating Cid, homosexual fabulous "man" uses Bahamut to attack Alexandria, and all that good stuff. So, I'm playing as Steiner and Beatrix, the former being an armor-clad badass who sounds like Arnold Schwarzenegger, and the latter being a female knight with the ability to kick ass.
Only in MYL's mind does Steiner sound like Arnold.
And only in MYL's mind was this next part incredibly difficult.

So, playing as the two of them, I went through seven fights by the end, four of which were back to back with no healing in between, with two of those ending with Steiner dead. After that, and a good seven minutes of cutscenes, there was a sudden character switch.
...I feel as though his facts are only slightly off.

I explored the Castle, telling everyone to leave (And I have no idea if that was futile or not, in the end), until I came across a book, lying all the way at the top of a bookshelf, just sitting there, closed, mocking me with its presence. So naturally, I do what any curious person would do in a library while the town is being destroyed: talk to the book, where it promptly threatens me.
There is no sane person who would talk to a book.
There do exist sane people that talk to pillows, though.

After searching EVERYWHERE for a Save Moogle and finding one, I go open the book...and I'm greeted with THIS.

HOLY DAMN YOU GUYS IT'S A BOOK BOSS FIGHT
Books are a very reliable source of information, hence making them MYL's nemesis.

...normally, I would droll on and on about this fight, while poking fun at it in various ways, while still reaching a point. But...it's a book. I may as well be fighting a living Necronomicon, because this thing is made of pure evil. It will cast doom. It will use an attack that gives everyone on the screen a paper cut that is so lethal, it can kill anyone who is underleved or ill equipped. And sometimes, it'll use that same attack back to back.
That sounds like every boss in an RPG! :o

So, you can't actually damage the boss. You can only scratch it, and after scratching it, the book flips open a page to find...nothing. If you attack it again...it flips open a page and finds nothing. If you attack it still, then...no, it still hasn't "found" anything. Only after the sixth time you try this, when you're left with Vivi, who is suffering from Doom, then maybe, just maybe you'll see this thing.
I like how he says he won't delve into details, and yet he goes ahead and describes his experience with the fight anyway.

In case you couldn't tell, it's just luck whether you find this thing or not.
...I think.

And after seeing this thing, he promptly begins to spam the everlasting crap out of Poison, until you either A. hit him with a physical attack, or B. he gets tired and goes back inside the book if you stall long enough. Yes, this thing is the actual enemy you're supposed to kill.

And, of course, he has items you can steal from him! What enemy doesn't? Be it bunny, cloud, tree or book, they will always have pilferable items. If you're like me and you must steal EVERY LAST ITEM from a unique enemy before you kill it, then good. Freaking. Luck.
Which you'll need if you want to steal things.
...oh wait, he was talking about actual luck.

And now, THE EXCITING CONCLUSION OF MY STORY. I fought this thing for an hour, each time trying to steal off of it and kill it, the normal, usual strategy. And every try led to the demise of our heroes by a mere paper cut. Nothing some gauze couldn't fix, but why not, I'll take my death. So again, a whole hour dedicated to this demon book. An hour that, in the end led to me saying "screw it", and going up to rescue the Princess. After which the castle was destroyed.

This accurately sums up my feelings towards the book.

So, that's how I spent my Wednesday night. Ironically, I actually did get a papercut that day. I cried for a little bit, until I realized I had corn chips, so I ate those until I felt better. My point, has anyone fought this thing, or another boss/enemy that poses a similar challenge?

Uh, yeah. Something like that.
Disclaimer: MYL has only heard of Emerald Weapon, and has never seen it in action.

There's a cheap trick to Ruby and Emerald Weapon :3

Go into the boss fight with Cait Sith and have his Slot limit break ready.
Get three pieces of Cait Sith for "Instant Death to all enemies." Works on bosses. :3
It's insanely difficult to do though, and if you miss one piece in the combo it's instant death for you instead.

As for this book, why don't I intercourse ing remember him?!

Holy poop. If I didn't already beat them the regular way, I'd so do that.

Tantarian isn't difficult. You just need the right abilities. Devil-Killer, Anti-Body, Auto-Regen, and use Freya(make sure she knows Rei's Wind). Zidane's Thievery move helps too.

Tantarian is easier on Disc 3, when you have the option of fighting him again, and I'm assuming that's the disc you were on. I don't remember having trouble with him, ever, actually. So just reassess everything and try again if you can, you'll see he isn't that bad.

This is the only boss in that game you really have to worry about:

It took me an entire year to finally beat this boss.

Also, Emerald isn't that bad if you fight it without a "trick". Ruby's the bastard.
