Title: Game piracy isn't as big as the companies say it is
Post by: Lotos on January 15, 2010, 09:29:44 AM
http://kotaku.com/5447954/most-people-are-still-buying-boxed-copies-of-games

QuoteThe study also had some interesting numbers on games piracy, especially if you're a Nintendo, Microsoft or Sony executive gripped by fear: "only" six million gamers admitted to downloading games illegally during the same period. Six million sounds like a lot, but the NPD Group say that's only 4% of all gamers.

And of that 4%, 72% of the pirating was being done on PC and Mac. So while console piracy is definitely a problem, it's might not be the epidemic some platform holders and publishers would have you believe.

Alright, no anti-piracy mechanisms on HG/SS please, I need them for events.

Edit: typed out tags, forgot a "/".

Honestly, when I pirate, I end up buying the original copy sooner or later (Or at the very least, borrowing it) and have had only two cases where I haven't. Most people who pirate that I know just do it simply because they have no other means of getting the game.

Granted, It's still a problem, but It's not nearly as huge as say music industry pirating.

I heard that the musicians get more money doing gigs.  Is that true?

I pirate.  I have no money.  Starfy is on the top of my DS games list after HG/SS.  Also, if I have a game, I should be able to have a copy on my flashcard so that I can cheat in it and not risk screwing up the legit game card.

The bands themselves get more money for doing gigs. The record labels get most of their money via the CD's while the band gets more merchandizing/live gigs part of the revenue, at least that's how it was, not too sure nowadays. It's basically why all of the big music fans always tell people to go to concerts and are okay with illegal music sharing. (and frankly I don't blame 'em)

I pirate, but only if I can't find the game anywhere.
...Or if I'm feeling cheap. Either way, it takes me about a week for one game, when I could run out and buy it and play it the same day.

I thought it was against the rules to talk about this.

I Pirated a few DS games recently, but will buy the games I'll go on Wifi for.

I hope not, but then again, people talk about torrenting in chat.  I think we're ok as long as we're not linking to the sites to get them/the files themselves.

Pretty much this.

I only pirate if I own a copy of the game.

Examples:
I own Modern Warfare on 360, I want it on PC.
I own 2 copies of Guitar Hero 3 on Wii, and 2 on 360. Fuck you Activision, I'm not giving you more money for GH3 PC

The reasons for which I pirate typically are:
Classic games I own the originals of, because I want to be able to play them on PC
Games that I believe may look good but which I would not be willing to pay for until knowing what the gameplay is like, or wanting to playing a game before I have a chance to buy it (trialing)
Same basic idea as above, but specifically for PC games: seeing if my computer can run it.
Obtaining a game I already have on another platform, like getting World of Goo on PC after already buying it on Wii (which frankly isn't much, considering many people have bought it for a penny)

Basically, if I pirate a game, money is still payed for the game in the end unless it sucks and isn't worth buying to me.

considering we're now making fancy lists...

The only two games I have pirated are ones are impossible to get in english by other means and generally very hard to get, those being Fire Emblem: Thracia 776 and Mother 1/Earthbound Zero; There's been a few other cases where I once had the game but it was sold off.

Adding to mine:

Like Blu said, if I own a copy of the game, I might download a copy to rip sprites from or play using save states.  I own EACH VERSION of Donkey Kong Country 1 (unless Donkey Kong Land is a port too, and not a different game): SNES, GBC, GBA, Virtual Console.  They're not losing any money if I download a DKC ROM, even a competition cartridge.
Fuck, I wish I had one of those.  It's like an arcade version: 50 Lives, a set amount of time, and it keeps score.  You go through some levels which are mixed up from the order of the original, but always the same order.  If Nintendo sold that on the VC for 3/4 or half the price of a SNES game, I'd tell everyone here to get it, especially if they haven't played Donkey Kong Country.
Zovi said ZUN doesn't care about people torrenting his games.  I torrent Touhou games, but am buying a legit copy of Embodiment of Scarlet Devil as there are no clean saves out there.  I also torrent doujin music as I can't get them for a good price anywhere (there are ones on eBay at like $20-$30 each (not even the ones I want) and some are already used).  I found a site where I can get some stuff, so when I get a job, I'm getting the two COOL&CREATE vocal CDs.

I torrented The Lonely Island's Incredibad second disc.  I liked it, so I bought it.  I torrented Daft Punk.  I'm buying the CDs that I like the tracks on.  All of Guns N' Roses' CDs are in my house except for "The Spaghetti Incident?", so I think I should be allowed to torrent the CDs I do own to my downstairs computer so I don't have to bring the CDs downstairs and re-rip them one by one without reprimand from the RIAA or GNR's lawyers.  If I'm missing bonus tracks that I can't find in the US or they're at a different store from which I bought the CD, I will torrent those.  Example: DragonForce (in before olololol studioforce).  They had a track on their newest album which didn't come on the one I purchased, and this was a "deluxe edition" or something; It had two bonus tracks, but not E.P.M.

You guys ever hear of that new movie that came out last month "Everybody's Fine"?  Well, it's based off an Italian movie called "Stanno Tutti Bene" which translates to that English title, or directly (I think) as "they are all well".  I can't find the VHS on Amazon (It's $600 used, those greedy bastards).  If I can't find it elsewhere, I'm going to torrent it.
