Get the first PL game (Professor Layton and the Curious Village). I also suggest Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days.

system has way too many good titles, so I'll keep it to ten that are worth checking out. Remember, amazon can be your friend with pricing and finding (http://amazon) - also genre mentioning helps. And cash mentioning does to.

In no partciular order;

1.Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story
2.Space Invaders Extreme 2
3.The World ends with You
4.Chrono Trigger (If you haven't already played the SNES one)
5.Kirby's Squeak Squad
6.StarFox: Command
7.Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood (Mixed title, some things good, some things bad)
8.Pokemon: Mystery Dungeon (Check out the other two If you want)
9.Meteos
10.Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days

and games that are worth an honorable mention but I don't have/etc:
1.Polarium
2.The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Trucks Tracks
3.Sonic Rush/Sonic Rush Adventure
4.Final Fantasy: Tactics Advance 2 Gilmore rift whatever (I hear It's poop from most people and I mainly agree, but you may like it)
5.Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon
6.Dragon Quest IV
7.Dragon Quest V
8.The other Phoenix Wright games.
9.Advance Wars
10.Kirby Canvas Curse (Not nearly as good as Super Star or Squeak Squad)

and the one title that is coming out this year that you have no reason to not get:
1.Golden Sun DS

...I think that's enough to entertain you for a long time.

Trauma Center

KINGDOM HEARTS FTW. Unless you didn't play 1 and/or CoM, then it will probably be too confusing to fully enjoy the story (not that Kingdom Hearts is easy to understand in the first place). Of course, there's still amazing gameplay and probably the best graphics I've seen on a DS, so it could still be worth it.

Also, Star Fox Command is... enjoyable, Sonic Chronicles is an awesome game, and unless you've owned Kirby Super Star Ultra previously and beaten every single mode of it, I suggest you buy that too.

I've also heard that Bowser's Inside Story and the Sonic Rush games are great, but DON'T buy the Pokemon Mystery Dungeons unless you really want them; they're repetitive and boring as heck once the "ZOMG Deep story in a pokemon game!" feeling wears off.

Advance Wars Duel Strike
Fire Emblem
Dragon Quest IV
Dragon Quest V
Dragon Quest VI (when it comes out)

A really good game is KH 358/2 days. Like SmashBro25 said, if you haven't played the others then you'll have trouble with the story. Even then, it's a great game. If you have friends that also have it, then it's a definite must buy.

Amen to that.  If Camelot stays true to their Golden Sun franchise from the past, then this game will be worth at least 100 times its price.  If you haven't played the first two Golden Sun games, do yourself a favor, hunt them down and play the 'eff out of them both.

I would also post a list of DS games I would suggest for the system, but most people on here have already mentioned most of the notable games at least once here, so I'll be lazy and just say, "I'll write it up later."   :)

Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story
Pokémon HeartGold/SoulSilver
I was going to post those.

Kirby Squeak Squad is good to get used.  Canvas Curse is awesome if you can get it.  ClubHouse Games if you like card/board games.  WarioWare Touched! would be hard to find, but it was a nice demonstration of what the DS could do at the time, minus wireless and buttons.

WarioWare DIY should be fun too.

Chrono Trigger is my favorite game of all-time, so that.

I can't believe that no one has suggested Mega Man ZX or Mega Man ZX: Advent. Easily two of the best games on the handheld. I also suggest:

I also suggest:

The World Ends With You
Mario and Luigi 3
Phoenix Wright Trials and Tribulations
Apollo Justice
Rune Factory 2
Dragon Quest IV
Dragon Quest V
Dragonball Z Attack of the Saiyans(very good old-school style RPG)
Dragonball Origins(plays similarly to LoZ:PH and Spirit Tracks)
Advance Wars Days of Ruin
Meteos
and Chrono Trigger
