Title: MK to be banned?
Post by: Nixon on February 22, 2010, 11:41:27 PM
don't get your hopes up, but volt (lol) on ns2 said that some sbr members leaked info saying that the current mk banning brigade is actually gonna win.  if this happens, the brawl metagame will be changed drastically, and m2k will have to get a job.

discuss.

*he didn't post any sources, but if he's right, we'll see the results soon enough.

I can understand why tournaments shouldn't have items or certain stages, but to take away a character seems a bit harsh. I mean, it's not like there's no control over Metaknight; how players fare in a match depends entirely on how skilled the MK player is versus how skilled the opponent is, which could easily be applied to any other character. Granted, there's no doubt Metaknight is higher tier than most and has several advantages, but I still don't see why tourney players can't just learn to counter him or use him themselves.

well, for starters, the best player in the world uses mk.  that alone can account for a lot of the hate.  but even among the theoretical smash community, there is a large amount of controversy over mk's extreme potential in combination with a low learning curve.  for example, here is a list of mk's matchups with the other characters, with even being 50:50

Bowser: 65/35
Captain Falcon: 90/10
Diddy Kong: 50/50
Donkey Kong: 60/40
Falco: 50/50
Fox: 60/40
Game and Watch: 55/45
Ganondorf: 90/10
Ice Climbers: 55/45
Ike: 80/20
Jigglypuff: 70/30
King Dedede: 65/35
Kirby: 65/35
Link: 90/10
Lucario: 55/45
Lucas: 65/35
Luigi: 60/40
Mario: 75/25
Marth: 60/40
Meta Knight: 50/50
Ness: 65/35
Olimar: 60/40
Peach: 65/35
Pikachu: 55/45
Pit: 65/35
Pokemon Trainer: 60/40
R.O.B.: 70/30
Samus: 80/20
Sheik: 60/40
Snake: 50/50
Sonic: 60/40
Toon Link: 70/30
Wario: 55/45
Wolf: 60/40
Yoshi: 70/30
Zelda: 70/30
Zero Suit Samus: 60/40

yes, mk is always represented by the number on the left.  but wait, there's more!  there is a technique in brawl known as planking, which involves hanging on the ledge and using your up b move to constantly get back on, opening up unique opportunities for stalling and edgeguarding techniques.  and, like every new universal AT that pops up in smash, mk is once again the best at doing it.

here's a vid of a ganon player using ganon's best possible planking techniques.  these are incredibly difficult considering ganon's awful aerial mobility, and aren't particularly useful in a real match, seeing as ganon has much better options off the ledge.  nonwithstanding, here is the video:

Not particularly impressive, right?  well, here is a video of an mk demonstrating what he can do with planking:

now, this mk was obviously not the best player, but look at how easy it was for him to stall out his opponent using planking in conjunction with mk's commanding aerial versatility.  and he was playing an obviously better snake, the next best character on the tier list.  if that's not broken, i don't know what is.

Ever since I started reading up on this I've always thought they should give him a temporary ban for a year or something to see how the metagame goes. Wonder when (If this is real) this will finally happen.

Meta Knight is a pretty terrible thing. I haven't payed much attention to Smash Bros in a while, but I was just spending some time on Smash Boards and it looks like Meta Knight is considered to be even better than when I last checked. He makes Sagat look like a weak kitten. Brawl sure is unbalanced.
