Title: Do you think we can truly appreciate hard work?
Post by: Rayquarian on March 08, 2010, 08:37:12 PM
Like all the work that goes into this site?  Do we really think we appreciate it?  How about other things in life, like being fortunate enough to have a comfortable life--do we appreciate that?  For a senior in High School, these questions just float in the mind occasionally, and I bet it's worse for all the college students nearing the end of college life.

And for those who work, put so much effort into their jobs, but never feel satisfied by it, their work seems like it's never appreciated.  So for those of you who actually work hard, would you explain what it's like to a school student?

I feel that people take these kind of things for granted. All of us do. My school does all these projects to help unfortunate people. I was in "Habitat for Humanity" and I looked at how lucky I am to have a great life going now. I feel that people really never do appreciate their hard work because they're just like, "Great, now i have to do this S***."

When they get a lot more out of it than they realize.

I'm glad I have it better off than most people, but I care more about keeping it that way than helping others. You must have a lot of time on your hands to do all this thinking.

It's disheartening, really, to put lots of work into something and never quite be fully appreciated.
I feel this way quite often, but I keep telling myself that you guys really do appreciate the site, so I don't give up. I love this place. :3

Oh boy. Philosophy 101.

It is impossible for one person to ever completely understand what makes another person tick, even if the two people are soul mates. In spite of how much some people may deny it, people keep others at varying psychological distances when it comes to how much they reveal about themselves, and the only person who has the potential to possess pure, unequivocal access is the self. And let's face it, most people would rather let Big Business and Government define who they are for them instead of grappling with their own insecurities. It's much easier to let someone else think for you.

Some seem to think that everyone can find "fulfillment" through volunteer work and being altruistic; I don't recall ever getting such a high from said work. Perhaps it's the bias of my upbringing, but I strongly believe that anyone has the chance to ascend in socioeconomic status with enough effort. Does it suck? Yes. Is it fairer than a welfare state? Yes. If people would like to help others out, that's all well and good, they should do whatever they enjoy provided it doesn't involve intercourse ing other people over. However, I don't think that people should be forced into "empathizing" with another person, whether that be through mandatory community service projects for schools or having my tax dollars diverted into Medicaid. People need to stand up and take charge of their own destinies, as difficult or impractical as that can sometimes seem.

Is it, therefore, impossible for someone to empathize with the plight of others? No. Is it impossible for someone to perfectly empathize? Yes.

I couldn't agree more. Forcing people to care about others is essentially communism. So by making people help each other out, you are actually condemning them to a fate worse than death.

Since this topic was brought up, is it not equally easy to think about how unfortunate you are compared to even the people around you? And anything that has so much work put into it will be lost eventually, ruining the reason for the hard work in the first place.

I appreciate it.  I don't know what I'd be doing without NSFCD.

In my own opinion, PY's and Super's personalities are helping fill the void left by Vaatix.

Some people can truly appreciate hard work. I understand I have it easy, but that doesn't make me grateful. I'm just another whiny teenager who gets upset when she doesn't get what she wants. And I even recognize it, but I don't change it. I do think helping others can be fulfilling, though. It depends on the way you look at it, I guess.
