Title: RPG King
Post by: Macawmoses on March 10, 2010, 12:28:47 AM
TK and I were debating the other day about what system was the King of RPGs. We had three contenders - the SNES, the PSX, and the DS.

The SNES was really considered due to the high quality RPG's it harboured, like SMRPG:LotSS, Chrono Trigger, etc.

I can't recall why the PSX was chosen...something to do with graphics causing it to be the home of FF or something.

The DS is my personal choice. To me, it's just had such a varied mix of solid RPGs. Everything from Pokemon, to Glory of Heracles, to Magical Starsign. And that's just from Nintendo. Then there is the Chrono Trigger remake. TWEWY. And the huge army of RPGs that hit the DS.

Some people are arguing that the Wii is becoming an RPG console with games like Monado on the way...but I don't see it. The PS3 was cited to be the next big one as the home to FF...don't see it. The Gamecube could be a candidate with the quality ones like Baten kaitos, but they were few and far between.

Who is the RPG king? And are you an RPG player?

I play tons of RPGs. I give my vote to the SNES with the Nintendo DS in second place. I would not give it to the Wii. Not at all. The PS3 has hardly had any RPGs.

I'd Have to say the DS.

Because it simply has all these remakes like Chrono Trigger and the newly released graphically improved Final Fantasies as well as an abundance of follow ups and sequels.

Not too much the but load of RTS/RPGs that have been added to it's catalog.

Tough call.

SNES - Final Fantasy 2 (IV), 3 (VI), and Mystic Quest, Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, Secret of Evermore, Super Mario RPG, Earthbound, Breath of Fire... and so many more.
PSX - Every Final Fantasy numbered 1-9, Wild Arms, Legend of Dragoon...
DS - Final Fantasy IV, Pokemon titles...

SNES wins, but PSX is a close second for the Final Fantasy collection.

DS. Only because of ONE game, and only one. Otherwise, I'd go with SNES, PSX, and DS.

For me I'm a huge RPG player but that doesn't mean I play everything out there. After playing a few moreso "Generic" RPG's I can honestly say I'm only towards a select few. Not very picky or anything but pretty closed off and critical about this genre.

Actually we were discussing the PS2, GC, SNES, and DS. Anyways for each...

SNES - Even If It's outbeat in the future by superior remakes (Which the DS already did with Chrono Trigger and FFIV) and systems to have more quality titles, this is one I still hold much respect for despite every intercourse ing popular RPG on this being overrated. Just from playing some NES RPG's I for sure saw how this changed the genre. Final Fantasy IV, VI, Chrono Trigger, Earthbound, SMRPG, and Secret of Mana...Some other few good games but yeah. It really doesn't have a lot but It's the quality novelty it holds for me.

And of course I may be a bit biased due to my childhood but I have actually replayed all of those (Except when I was young I never played the SoM cart much and only actually playing through it now) - Sure they may not have the biggest replay value but like hell, I'd play through them again. And I normally have a gigantic list of games I need to play.

PS2 - This mainly has it due to Quantity; PS1 as well. Still FF7-9, Tactics, Persona 4, Kingdom Hearts, .Hack and probably some gigantic freakish lists like the ones posted in this thread If you go to google. Hell I read an article where a person owned 30 PS2 ones.

GC - I mainly put it towards it's quality much like the SNES. Very few; What? Pokemon Colosseum, Baten Kaitos, Crystal Chronicles, Path of Radiance, Tales of Symphonia, and the obvious TTYD mention. However those ones have quite become staples; Mainly Path of Radiance and TTYD since they're often considered the best FE/Mario RPG games.

DS - DS has it in a mix; It's much like the PS2 and SNES combined. The FF4 remake actually made me enjoy the game more, Pokemon, FE, A poopload of Square-Enix titles, the system with the most Mario RPG's, and so forth.

As for my vote it really depends; For innovation I have to give it to the SNES because after playing some NES RPG's I think I'd be mindboggled If we kept it limited to that.

For games...I still don't know. It would be PS2 If I was more of a fan of quantity but that's not the case. DS Is also nice but I've only tried out a good number of RPG's that stood up well enough to where I can say "Yeah; Get this". Think I'd say SNES > DS > GC > PS2 > PS1. However the distance is not much separated between them.

And no other system is really worth considering when it comes to this topic.

edit: And I can't really compare the other three all to the SNES too well because I haven't even had a good chance to play through some well myself. Don't even have ToS yet D:

tl;dr:
Quantity - PS1/2
Quality/Quantity mixed - DS
Quality/Moreso Innovation - GCN/SNES

To me at least; OF course that doesn't mean the other systems don't have those.

I advise backspacing on those extra lines.

Thread is too undermined and lacks debate. I don't think mack would mind if I bumped this seeing how the post goal is already over.

So, anything people who didn't see this topic earlier would like to say?

It really is a tossup between DS and SNES. Personally, I'd say the DS, largely in part due to the number of ports from previous RPGs on earlier systems to DS, such as Chrono Trigger and earlier Final Fantasies. Portability is also a major factor.

The fact it has them AND a slough of its own titles is what makes it great imo.
