Title: Final Fantasy 8
Post by: Night the Lucario on March 26, 2010, 01:10:58 PM
Two things. One, this will probably be a discussion thread. Which means, of course, that you can pick apart things you don't like and did like about a game few of you have probably played for a good five or so years. I'm starting it again. I'll probably post my progress as I go through.

This is my fifth or so play-through, and I'm over-leveling. Mostly, since the creatures and bosses grow with you, by learning all of Quetzacotl's and Shiva's abilities. I still haven't gotten Ifrit, and I'm probably a good three hours in. And I have the second level for the four main spells(Fira, Thundaga, Blizaga, and Cura, for those of you that don't remember.)

So. Discuss?

Pick apart things?  Spoony did it for us in 1 and a half hours (Don't see the FFVII or FFI part If you just want the plain review) (http://spoonyexperiment.com/category/final-fantasy-viii/page/3/) - It's amazing.

As for FFVIII/8 I thought it was a decent FF game myself; Not one of the best but not one of the worst.

The story of FF8 wasn't as compelling as the others, but it was a good game. Entirely too few characters (same beef with FF13 and FFV), but they make it work. I guess it's more tolerable with the two temporary characters. I wasn't huge on the junction system, but once you load up 100 Ultimas or Deaths, you're set.

Aside from those beefs, I like the game. The battle system worked well, and when I was younger I got to cheat since I had a turbo controller, I could fly through the button presses of the GFs.

The story was good, but not as bright as it could have been. The love story was a bit strong.

Where this game shines the most is it's music. I feel that this game has close to, if not the best, the greatest music of any game in the series.

I started a file a month ago and had Regen, Tornado, Protect, Reflect, Meltdown, Curaga, Quake, and Str+60% all by the end of the first disc.

Oh hey, I don't hate VIII or its Junctioning system. I'll say that right now. I'll also say that Squall and Rinoa's love story is the best of the series. (FUCK YOU FFX FANBOYS)

And like Rob, I also consider VIII's music one of the best (If not the best) in the series. It's really, just a nice soundtrack.

Quezacotl is level 41... Shiva is level 37... and I still don't have Ifrit. I'm getting close to mastering the twos abilities, though.

...I'm obscenely over-powered, aren't I?

The main reason why you think most bosses in any games are so easy, explaining your ego.

And for a simple answer, yes you are.

Um... the bosses on this game level up as you do. and I'm level 27, and Quistis is level 28.

>.> And I haven't fought any bosses on this play-through yet...

Nope; I kinda liked it to. It was very boring at the beginning and triple triad was as boring as hell but later it got to be interesting. During my grindings, some would have to draw magic, while others would beat the poop out of enemies so they'd die.

Granted it was easily one of the lesser systems and still an ass but it gets a tad bit more poop on it than it deserves.

Also people watch the spoony review.

Nope. Actually, I like the idea of the Draw system. I like it better than having to learn spells with weapons.

Also, I'm watching the last Spoony review right now, thanks for the link. They're really quite enjoyable.

Ah; No prob. Also for those of you who want to see some Final Fantasy X criticizing after you're done click this link. It only contains part 1 but it's hilarious. Bout 20 mins long. (http://spoonyexperiment.com/category/game-reviews/final-fantasy-x/)

Most wouldn't have thought it possible, but I found something more time-consuming, tedious, boring, and just plain annoying than Drawing magic is to Spoony. He should give grinding Fastitocalons a shot. For hours. Until you've mastered everything both starting GFs have.

Also, try getting 5/6 characters' ultimate weapons in disc one. >:)

GameShark makes everything possible. :P

But in reality...no.

Oh dear lord I vaguely remember that.

Also I'm not gonna lie, while I think at the very least that 9 and 6's soundtracks are better, The Man with the Machine Gun is one of the best god darn FF themes that isn't a final boss song. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a2vpqd9gKXk)

Almost all ultimate weapons on disc 1? Oh jeez. Be prepared for an easy or grindful game.

All you have to do is play a poopload of card games and get to level 30-40. Oh, and have Mug with Diablos.
Title: Re: Final Fantasy VIII
Post by: Night the Lucario on March 27, 2010, 09:57:28 AM
I can get Mug soon enough, right now Quistis is level 38 and Squall is level 41, so that's not a problem. Card games, on the other hand... how do you get the First Edition of Weapons Magazine by playing children card games and Mugging random monsters then turning them into cards?
Title: Re: Final Fantasy VIII
Post by: jnfs2014 on March 27, 2010, 10:51:29 AM
You don't need the magazine to make the weapons. All you need is the weapons.
Title: Re: Final Fantasy VIII
Post by: Night the Lucario on March 27, 2010, 10:56:59 AM
But... if you can get the weapons without the Magazine, what's the point in collecting a magazine?

Also, how is this done, since I'm going to be doing oh-so-very-much Grinding in the next several hours.

Ignore what he said. He surely used the GameShark so much that he forgot. You really need the magazines to unlock weapons in the shop.

Actually, I just found a guide on it. I'm getting the Ultimate Weapons in Disk One! Except for Irvine, but he's too stupid and pointless to matter.

So can I assume they get unlocked somehow? I don't see where it says they get unlocked to synthetize(sp?).

Night, you mind editing your topic title to use an 8 instead of VIII? It'll make it easier to navigate the board.

I'm bumping this topic. Mostly because I'm at the second Laguana dream, and I just need the four Laser Cannons for the Pulse Ammo(And Quistis' Blue Magic), and I need to find a Grendel for Zell's gloves.

And I have Mug. Seriously, I think I'm way over leveled...

FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF

Alright, so, just went to turn on my PS2. I was in the mood to play Final Fantasy 8 after reading this thread. So, I go and the data isn't found. Oh well, I have a PS1 memory card that has different slots, so I just need to find the right one. Well, I do, but then it randomly asks me, "Hey, want to Reformat?" and I was already pressing X.

I LOST ALL OF MY FUCKING PS1 DATA!!! CHRONO TRIGGER, FINAL FANTASY, RESIDENT EVIL, ALL GONE!!!!! FML!!!!! AND I NEVER SAY FML!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And the worst part is, I hate Disk 1 with SUCH a burning passion.

Oh I don't. It just was a freak accident. I'm perfectly alright with it, gives me something to do. I was just really sad when it happened.

Don't even bring up freak accidents with memory lose in systems.

I had to redo all of the Ace Combat game and unlock every single plane including the FALKEN which is an absolute pain to unlock.  :|

Wasted soo much time redoing it when i could've been playing the new games i got.

@acer: I'm guessing you're talking about 5? That was pretty hard to do. Especially the desert mission with the "attack at the same time lol" thing.

On topic: I don't know if this is weird, but every year around the middle of May I start craving this game. It goes back to fifth grade. :O

I'll agree.

Though I don't hate the junction system, I still don't like it. It was an experiment and nothing more, hence why it hasn't been used in games that succeeded VIII.
