Title: Laptop broken-ish?
Post by: Dog Food on April 07, 2010, 03:12:17 PM
So my laptop is broken or something.

It randomly shut off on me and refused to turn back on (I had full battery and it was plugged in and was not overheated). I gave it a few hours to itself, and then I retried. Well it worked and turned on. Yippee. But now the charger won't register. It's plugged in, but it's only running on the battery. I kind of need this fixed, since I only have nine minutes on this laptop left before it shuts off and I may potentially never get it to turn on again.

So, what do?

UPDATE: Right as I was about to send this, the cord registered and it started to charge. Weird, right? And right when I was about to exit out of this topic, it went back down to low battery and it unregistered that the cord was plugged in. Then it went back to charging, and just now (as I type this) it changed back to low battery. So... what do? ...And now it keeps freezing for a couple seconds and then switching to battery/cord. Kind of annoying.

Are you jiggling the cable?

I wasn't, as fair as I could tell. But I tried doing that afterward and it would somewhat work. But I'd be holding it in place and after a few minutes it would just stop again, even if I didn't touch it.

It recently shut off on it's own again (even though I should have had five minutes left) and won't turn back on. When I press the power button, a red light flashes a few times (there is a picture of a battery below the light). Once again, it won't react to the fact that there is a cable plugged into it. I got this darn thing April 4th of last year. It's been a couple days over a year and it's already broken? Seriously?

Cord is broken. Probably need to order a new one. They're less than $20 on Amazon.

The light on the box is green, so I figured it was alright. Would it be the cord, or is it possible that the hole that the cord fits into is messed up?

If it's the cord, I'll be so relieved.

It sounds more like the outlet (inlet? w/e) on the laptop itself is screwy. If that is the problem its relatively cheap to fix. I would take it into a BestBuy or a computer repair place to get it looked at

Possibly the cord. I went through about 4.

get another cord.  Worst case scenario, you pay $20 for something you will need later

Final bit of info: If I hold the cord in place, it charges.

The only problem is I'm typing everything one handed. So does that still mean it is probably just the cord? If so, I'll buy another one as soon as I can.

Definitely the cord. Order a new cheap one (off-brand ones work just as well, if not better, than name-brand) and try it out.
The one I use it BRITE-ON brand...it's lasted longer than the HP ones I ordered.

I bought a new cord on Amazon and everything. It just came today.

The problem is, it doesn't seem to be any more effective then the last one. Actually, it refuses to charge, but shows the charging icon. It is balancing at 0%. It won't get any higher, nor any lower and shut off. Also, if I move the cord the wrong way, it registers it as not plugged in again.

So, did I get a faulty cord or is the problem in my laptop?

So I was right, its the input plug on the laptop itself. There are a couple ways you can go about fixing it. The one I would recommend is calling/e-mailing the manufacturer, see about how much it is, or if it can even be done without replacing the laptop entirely. (Mine had to be sent in for a couple of weeks, they replaced it. I was out of warranty so I had to pay for it though)

Or you can try a local-ish Computer repair place. Same as above

Damn. My dad is going to be so mad.

...And blame me for breaking it >.>...

Damn... Okay, thanks a lot. I'll look into it.
