Title: Why do you join forums?
Post by: Syntax Error on April 17, 2010, 12:00:26 AM
An open ended question, I blogged (http://sam.websyntax.net/2010/04/14/what-makes-people-join-forums-part-1/) about it, now I am doing research, why do you join forums?
What makes you hit the register button?
Do you know if you are going to join or not the moment you visit the site?

Just looking for some answers from others :)

For me, my first forum was Nsider. I joined it 'cause I had heard about the Sage program and wanted in on it. From there I got used to the forum experience and tried a few others. I generally register to a forum if it's based around an idea I feel will keep me around for a while. I've joined forums for filming/video editing, spriting/editing, video game forums...

Furthermore they need to seem approachable. If I lurk through the posts and see it's a rather unwelcoming place, I won't bother.

This is the only forum I still frequent.

I usually only join a forum if I see something that I want to comment on, and also if it's a forum for a site that I frequent. Also if it's required to access certain things I'll sign up if it's something I really want.

Basically I only register if the site shares a common taste of gaming. And then I normally forget about it a month later.

when I used to play more competitively I would join the forums where the community was at.  I might stick around if I enjoy it, but I usually don't.

Or if it's a forum based around one specific subject, I might stick around there to discuss it.

If I want to post there/want to be a member of the community, even if I don't even post.
Gbatemp - <5 posts
DoujinStyle - <50 posts
Boyah - around 1400 posts?  I don't even know why I keep going back there, but I do.
I was a member of Soapland, but I don't know what happened to them.
I joined 8thcircuit, but haven't posted there (forgot pass)
Just joined Hadaway
Here I have some nice online friends here which keeps me coming back.  I join forums to try and make new ones.

Hate to say it, but 8th-Circuit isn't about the forum so much. More about the articles. Of course, if you want a new pass for some reason (like commenting on pieces) let me know.

I have issues adjusting to new forums, so I typically don't join new forums because of shyness, unless the place is really interesting and thus I'm compelled to join. So far, three of the four forums I've been to were all favors for the same person (Basically), and one I only joined because I was a fan of the site founder.

...wait, didn't I already post in a thread exactly like this one?
._.;

Writing an article for you guys sounds like fun.  I wish I could write one, but I doubt you guys would like a review of a year-old game.

If that was the case, I would be worthless trash to them for touching upon such games.
How about you submit that article BEFORE you start running your mouth?

This is the only forum I've joined. I did it because my brother told me to, basically (he probably knew I needed something like this, since I've helped him with some of his projects on here in the past).

And I've enjoyed the experience. I think the biggest reason I've sticked around though is because of my constant need to be working on something. If I don't have a project going, I find myself growing bored no matter where I am or what I'm doing. And so when I came on here, it didn't take me long to start making things. A few Werewolves, revived a TCG, a text-based RPG, started this SSB:BR recently, and I've got another Werewolf pending. I've probably done more, but these are the only things I really remember.

I stay here because of that. I constantly have ideas buzzing in my head, 75% of them I ignore or write up and then delete later (or write up and save it until something else of mine ends or dies so I can post it). I guess I'm one of those people that just suddenly has this burst of energy and this sudden idea and then I rush into making it. Then eventually the high settles down and I get bored. And I stay in this state of frustration until I get another high, and then the phases repeat themselves.

So thanks, NSFCD, for being my favorite outlet <3

So that I can discuss video games and stuff with people who actually care about said things.

Do I look like someone that actually has a reason to be on here? Until recently, I wasn't even on talking terms with most of the people here, let alone consider them friends. I literally have no reason at all except to waste time and talk with people that are actually nerdy. (Trust me, when you boil it down, I am the nerdiest person probably in my school, or even the town. Allegretto gets close but is drawn to reality easier)

I join forums to get away from real life, while still interacting with people. I'm a social person - but sometimes IRL is just too much to deal with. At least with politics on here you can start a new slate whenever you feel, and truly express yourself.

I join forums that offer information and people that are interesting to me. Chances are, if the first three seconds of browsing your forum don't make me a sucker, I won't join. User recommendation boosts that number to about 5. Flashy banners reduce it to about 1.

I've joined many forums, sometimes so I can post a single thread and post a few times here and there, usually for a different specific reason I don't remember right now, this one and Oldsider (and a short bit of NS2) are the only ones I frequented, I don't exactly know why, it's not the people, and the games end quickly, idk, but you guys are doing something right.

I could make a long post but in a nutshell this. I join forums to get a per say different experience from all else around me. If I relied on my real life friends right now here in Dubai I'd be finding myself in a pretty bad slate. There's so many reasons overall.

I don't know why I join forums really, because I rarely ever post anywhere. Oldsider was the only place I ever really posted and even then it took me like 4 years to even get 3000 posts, I just prefer to lurk I suppose. :/

I join forums for the whole purpose to meet other people and make my life a bit more exciting. Simple enough to me.

Well, originally, I joined the forums for info. At first, I wanted to know what game Master Hand came from.

But then I started liking all the people. So yeah... I stuck around.

I joined this forum so I would have something to do when I'm board. I'm also more comfortable when I talk in a forum than in person.
