We've had a century of movies, and even more time for books, and in every movie/book there is someone or something that can be pegged as the "villain", and someone or something that can be named the "hero". Well, think back to all the movies and you have seen or read and try to pick some of your favorite heroes/villains from them.
For me, I think Nurse Ratchet is one of the most iconic female villains (and that goes for the book and movie). The Joker has one of the most famous catchphrases. I could repeat the line, "Why so serious?" and "Let's put a smile on that face" from The Dark Knight over and over again. I've always loved Freddy Krueger for the music that goes with him, his sick comments to his victims, and just the sheer ruthlessness to him. Michael Myers I've also loved the music that goes with it, along with his back story and his killing methods. Hannibal Lector was great when played by Anthony Hopkins. Never read the books, though.
As for heroes... I've always loved the cool and silent types, or the clumsy yet lovable ones. Joe Kidd from Joe Kidd, Wolverine from X-Men (although he was given a bigger role in the movies anyway), Clarice Starling, if only because I like the way she can delve into the psychology of someone's mind.
Well, those are a few examples of some of the characters I like, but that's off the top of my head.

Also, because I love them but they aren't either of the above, a small section for Anti-heroes right here:
Anton Ego (Ratatouille)
The Black Rabbit of Inle (Watership Down)
The Antihero is Long John Silver. Love that man.
Oops, forgot another fantastic villain; Lady Tremaine from Cinderella. That woman is a grade-A ninny.
Dolores Umbridge is a far scarier villain than Voldemort (in the movie).
The best villain on my list? Mornlieth Falconsbane. Not only is he an evil magician with so much power that two gods had to step in to kill him dead, he's an Ancient Evil who is Older Than Time and cheats Death on a regular basis. This is, of course, from the ill-known Valdemar world. So go read it.
My best hero? Hm... that's a tough one. Either Rorschach or Vanyel. Who is also from Valdemar.
Mine would have to the Man in Black from LOST. (also known as the smoke monster)
can kill you and your friends, whenever he wants, and you can't do anything to stop him.
He also has the scariest expressions ever.
