Title: DBZ Aspect ratio
Post by: Nayrman on May 04, 2010, 09:20:26 AM
Of course, when I actually have a technical question, the board disappears.

Anyway, I got the last couple of seasons of DBZ on DVD finally, but the aspect ratio is poop. I've tried changing the resolution, among many other things. And yes, I've tried other hardware. The screen looks cropped and is cutting edges on my DVD player, my PS3, and the DVD player in the basement, so this is something to do with the DVD. However, there is nothing that seems to be working.

I've tested out other DVD's and those seem to look just fine, so I guess it's just FUNi intercourse ing me over with the last couple of seasons. Anyone have any advice or similar problems?

So is it cutting off parts? Or is it squashing the image, leaving it pillar/letterboxed? Either way, I would see if your TV has a stretch or zoom feature.

I've tried stretch and zoom, doesn't help.

And it's cutting off parts. Imagine taking a full screen, then taking off about 1/8th of the screen of each side. It's WATCHABLE don't get me wrong, but it looks like the screen doesn't fit, which is jarring. I've tried all the aspect ratios and resolutions on both my PS3 and DVD player, and nothing seems to work. If anything getting it letterboxed makes it WORSE as it crunches THAT down into a smaller screen size.

I was just saying to use stretch to make it fit the screen. Out of curiosity, which season/dub are you watching?

Have you tried a different TV/computer to watch it on?

Also, does the DVD have an aspect ratio setting?

It SHOULD be but the screen is cropping it regardless.

That was season seven, and eight seems to have the same problem. And obviously the FUNi Dub.

Uh, YEA. Read the post plz. And no it doesn't have a separate setting on the DVD. Just audio options.

Edit: I think it's something FUNi did with the episodes themselves, as the DVD menus are ratio'd fine, as far as I can tell, which makes me all the more confused as to what the intercourse s going on...

I have Season 1-9(those orange box sets) and I have none of the problems you just mentioned.

Which is all the more baffling. What makes even less sense is that the DVD's box says it's 16:9, which is the ratio the DVD player is showing at. So I have no idea what the problem is.... ugh.

I would try ripping some video from it with a program to see if it truly is the DVD's fault.
