Title: Miyamoto is "retiring"

Apparently not a full retirement, but just from his position so he can work on smaller games with smaller teams or by himself. So that seems to imply no more real involvement in Mario, Zelda, and so on. Part of me thinks Nintendo is screwed now. However, part of me thinks this may finally be a chance for the directors, etc. to actually try some new things, as I think Miyamoto, while very good at making games, has been holding them back in terms of evolving series in terms of production values, or in risk taking. I dunno, I just think he's lost some of his mojo the last number of years. So sad to see him go, but this may also be a chance to finally get some fresh air in Nintendo.

I think this is the start of a downloadable approach from Nintendo.

I don't think his position really means anything in terms of going up the ladder. I mean, this is Miyamoto we're talking about; if he stepped down to "Part-Time Maintenance Worker" and then said "Let me come back up for a bit and help make Super Mario Galaxy 3," the execs would likely give in immediately because keeping a fanbase is good for business and printing money is even better.

Instead, I see this as a positive; by working at lower levels, Nintendo may actually have some good "small" games more often, like downloadables and new IPs. Also, because he'll likely be working with newbies at the company, he'll basically be training them to handle things when they're finally running the place and he's long gone.

I beat it too long ago, now I'm just in the video game lull between now and Christmas where I hold off on getting Skyrim and Zelda, and just twiddle my thumbs for awhile.

If anyone has a 3DS, I recommend getting Pushmo, which is on the eShop. It's pretty badass.
