Me, I think they're horribly mutated Space Pirates...
To those who don't know what those Beserker Knights and Lords are (and will take the spoilers), they are the large creatures that you have to shoot back the purple-ish phazon bubble like blast, and if you have the nova beam & x-ray visor, activate the x-ray visor and attack throught the phazite plating. A good example of one (a lord) is the one you have to face at the ship dock when you return after the pirates start attacking.
I would say that they are Space Pirates that were mutated by the Phazon, much like the Omega Pirate.
I think they are a different species of creature allied with the Space Pirates because when you scan them it says they are creatures horribly mutated by Phazon. If it was a mutated Space Pirate then wouldn't it have said Space Pirate and not creature?

But, it was never specified, so...
Oh, never mind, it's a matter of opinion.
No doubt a horribly mutated space pirate. Just the fact that has small sparkly blue spots all over it (probably phazon) and that no other alien race seems to be included in the game, makes me think this way.
Mutated Space Pirates by Phazon of course. I think.
