Title: Oh wow...
Post by: Pokesamrus on October 24, 2007, 07:08:38 PM
So according to wikipedia boy scouts don't allow atheist children to participate in boy scouts :/

From wikipedia, from this article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boy_Scouts_of_America_membership_controversies (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boy_Scouts_of_America_membership_controversies)
QuotePosition on atheists and agnostics

See also: Atheism and religion and Discrimination against atheists

The Boy Scouts of America's position is that atheists and agnostics cannot participate as Scouts (youth members) or Scouters (adult leaders). According to the Bylaws of the BSA, Declaration of Religious Principle:

"The Boy Scouts of America maintains that no member can grow into the best kind of citizen without recognizing an obligation to God. In the first part of the Scout Oath or Promise the member declares, 'On my honor I will do my best to do my duty to God and my country and to obey the Scout Law.' The recognition of God as the ruling and leading power in the universe and the grateful acknowledgment of His favors and blessings are necessary to the best type of citizenship and are wholesome precepts in the education of the growing members."[2]

The BSA requires a religious test for membership. During the membership application process, youths and adults are required to subscribe to the precepts of the Declaration of Religious Principle and to agree to abide by the Scout Oath and Law, which include the words, "do my duty to God" and "reverent". Youths are also required to repeat the Scout Oath and Law periodically after being accepted as Scouts. The BSA believes that atheists and agnostics are not appropriate role models of the Scout Oath and Law for boys, and thus will not accept such adults as leaders.

I doubt that you actually told them that you are.

By the way, is this at all related to my thread in Serious Discussion, "Your opinion on discrimination against atheists in the U.S."? I mentioned that atheists aren't supposed to be able to join boy scouts in that thread...

So it's a sort of a Christian organisation. And since you pretty much don't like Christian stuff, why would you care? You know it's pretty much just the same the as NBA, in that they don't allow women to play in the NBA.

Well, that is most certainly pathetic.

Its as pathetic as not allowing gays in the boy scouts.

and how will the boy scouts even know if he belives in god or not. They might us well because usally when people starts boy scouts there young and belive every word is told to them so if one day an Athiest comes to the camp and gives them proof of no god in our world they would belive and them and his parents would sue the camp.
