It's been revealed that the new 40GB PlayStation 3 features more than just a cut down hard disk drive. Sony has also thought to stick the 65nm version of the Cell inside the new console, reducing the power usage down to around 135 Watts (down from 200 Watts.) That means the console also runs cooler and quieter, which is always a plus for a device that usually resides in the living room. Sony also jiggled around a few other components by making the heat pipe smaller, swapping out the motherboard for a new version, and added a button battery to keep time when the system is off. Looks like potential PS3 purchasers will be looking forward to a less noticeable din then.

So, it seems that the 40GB PlayStation 3 is full of a lot of pros and cons. >_>
This threads hate you all too. :'(
PS3 has too many different versions, need one set standard.

True, these SKUs are getting a little crazy, but hopefully Sony can stick to the 40GB and 80GB versions from now on.
Hell, and at least we don't have all the confusion that Japan does... They have the 40 GB, 20 GB, 60 GB, and I believe they're going to be getting the 80 GB soon. x_x
It's like the iPod, only Sony-made.
Is it the model that isn't backwards compatible, though?
65 nanometre surprise?
thats what you gave your girlfriend last night.

Sadly, yes, though I wouldn't be surprised if they're going to be changing the 80 GB over to it... Or for that matter already have.

They should just have one without a hard drive, and let you use any external one you want personally. If it breaks, you can buy a new one without having to send it in, there's an advantag right there. If they are worried about heat, there's another reason to remove the hard drive.

You don't have to seen a PlayStation 3 in if your HDD is messed up. The PlayStation 3 has a very easy to access HDD bay.

It's a regular 2.5' SATA drive that you'd find in laptops.

Huh... well then, why don't they just have one hardware model, and have you order the HD seprately?

It's not like these things cost a lot or are hard to get. Of course, you don't really need all that space unless you've got a lot of HD Content or are using the PS3 as your PC (Linux boot).
I still don't care about the ps3 :|

Agreed.
I find it amazing that you would waste time posting here.
Kay, now Sony is saying they simply cut power usage.
