This is the thread where people recommend the best shooters for me, because I've just recently become very fond of this genre of games. The only one I own at the moment is Gradius III on the SNES.
I have a SNES, Genesis, Game Gear, N64, Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance. I also have a Gamecube if you count that, but do not recommend Ikaruga, because it's expensive and I'm not bothering with it right now.
Also don't recommend Radiant Silvergun because it's even more expensive.
R-Type is fun though you've probably heard of it.
My friend wants me to help him buy Ikuruga off of eBay. It's about $40 for complete. I bet him that he couldn't beat the game.

I plan on buying Super R-Type soon.
I also asked for Ikaruga as a gift for either my birthday or Christmas.

I've played the first Gradius, and it's not all that great, but good enough for me to buy once I get a NES at least. Galaga I already have in the form of a plug-and-play thing. But what console/handheld is Chaos Field for?
Galaga, Space invaders ;D

I was leaning more to the idea of shooters that I wouldn't already have.

Gamecube, arcade, and dreamcast.
the whole game is like a series of boss fights.
I would recogmend
axelay (super nes)
gradius 3 ( super nes and arcade)
esp rade (arcade but you can get it by using a emulator)

I've played Axelay. It's pretty good.
And I already have Gradius III. Great game, though the horrible slow-down is a bit annoying.

yes they are both good. esp rade is a excellant verticcally scrolling shooter with bullets on every inch of the screen. gradius 3's slowdown isnt that bad (you havent witnessed bad slowdown till you'v played it on a emulator), what really anoys me is the fire stage, there is basicly no way to get through that tight space without getting hit by those comets on the harder diffucultys, one time I was trying to get to as many loops as I could and on loop 3 I accidentally died on that stages bosses and than I got game over because I couldnt get past those comets, and you know how many lives I had when that happend? TWENTY!
Get Gunstar Heroes for Genesis and Goldeneye 007 for N64. These are great games.
UN Squadron/Area 88. For a shooter its light on difficulty, but it has good music.
Can I throw Geometry Wars out here?
If you get a Wii, definitely get Geometry Wars.
Awesome, awesome game.
Gradius, Galaxian, Galaga, R-type. Those are my favs. :)
